You’re right, she did do a great job. I couldn’t help but notice how little this script gave her to do. Being the “straight man” in a sketch is more than just a series of reactions. The portion given to Mulaney are well written and well performed,and I think that an even better script would have involved a more well rounded representation of the straight man’s perspective.

@jameslarimer92113 жыл бұрын
@@zodiackitten6110 Yeah it really is sort of a cautionary tale regarding jumping the shark. When they introduced Raquel Welch as the divorced neighbor/Femme Fatale and every new episode was another switcheroo, you could smell the desperation. Gotta say, though, in the season 3 premier when the mailman switcherood with Vinnie the cop was possibly the only truly good episode of the series. C. Thomas Howell's performance really brought it all together.
@ChestersonJack2 жыл бұрын
@@jameslarimer9211 Oh god, the mailman! Honestly my favorite character, playing off the old “lonely wives cheating on their workings husbands with the milkman” archetype but with using the mailman in a will-they, won’t-they with the mom not because her husband works, but because he keeps refusing to have sex! It was a brilliant twist on the trope. But yeah I gotta agree, him switching with the cop was the best episode. Like, we knew mailman Jimmy slept around, but discovering through Vinnie’s eyes that he ran a prostitution ring? And Vinnie bumbling his way through trying to take legal action against it, WHILE the mailman actively sabotages him in his own body AND trying not to ruin the poor women’s lives? Extremely progressive for the time, but somehow they made a hilarious comedy of errors out of it! It perfectly set the tone for the rest of the season, somehow made the single episode feel like a feature film, and the way it came full circle when (spoilers for those who haven’t seen season 3 of Switcheroo) the ring finally got exposed when the son used it to try to explore his puberty-changed feelings by having sex with someone other than his mother! And the neighbor clearing his charges so he’d owe her something… Brilliant stuff, man, brilliant stuff… They made great use of Vinnie’s fear of dogs in that episode, too!

Not really. John's a lot like Nate Bargatze. Their episodes are easily some of the best but it's because they know how to write for their particular style of comedy. They both have incredible comic timing but neither of them really stretch themselves as performers when they host. They just do what they do really well. John has said himself Lorne was right not to put him in the cast. He thought maybe he could have done Weekend Update but that never came about while he was still on the show due to his friendship with Seth and not wanting to take that role from him by pushing for it.

I remember watching _Switcheroo._ It was on right after _Learning the Ropes_ where Lyle Alzado plays a professor by day, masked wrestler by night. Good times.

If Learning the Ropes had been on when I was in junior high, I would have watched the shit out of that show.

I’ve watched this skit 100 times and I JUST noticed switcheroo aired on Saturdays at 10am... genius

That means a Saturday morning cartoon died for this. So typical of American TV.

Coming back to this after the Mulaney/Simon Rich interview on Seth. Glad to see they slipped the Jonestown reference into this one since they were finally able to get it to air!

i'm surprised nobody's saying anything about how heidi gardener seriously is perfect for the 80s look!!! i'm not even sure how to describe it but her face fits exactly with the aesthetic!!!!!

I just noticed that, on the "night to try" clip, it says Saturdays 10 am. That means that this "aired" during Saturday mornings when kids would be watching TV.

I love how it says the show airs at 10am on Saturday’s.

John said he wrote this with Simon Rich when they were both SNL writers, but nobody liked it and no host wanted to do it. When he knew he would get to host the show himself, he told Simon on the phone, and before he finished talking Simon said "we're doing Switcheroo!".
