The great thing about TLK is that the show structures each season around 2 books from Bernard Cornwell's series. This means that the show is able to move at a great pace, with almost no filler at all. Every episode is filled with important moments. So each halfway point of each season is its own climax as well.

I think the pacing works better in Season 2 and 3. Season 1 felt way too truncated for my taste, particularly with Uthred's upbringing with Earl Ragnar being totally removed.

@@SolarDragon007 That made sense though, they wanted to get to Uhtred being grown while taking all the major bits for his origin story. I believe if they had of followed the pacing of the book it may have taken longer than needed. Perhaps they could've added in that Alfred & Uhtred already met when he was younger, maybe Brida would've benefited from having more backstory, and maybe Rorik and Ragnar would've been seen differently - but i understand the artistic choice to condense that stage of his life because they had to get to the action & they could show us how Uhtred had grown into a man through the actor & his fighting prowess.

The reason it feels like a season finale at the half way point (in every season) is because the show is based on a book series by "Bernard Cornwell" and two books are covered in each season. That's why it's so fast moving and exciting. I've not got to the part of book yet where they mention Rolo but I know Ubba was Ragnar Lothbroks son because I just read that part. I'll keep you updated. The books are exactly like the show. They stayed true to the source material, thank god!

So much emotion in this episode ragnar getting out all his grief he's felt losing his parents when fighting kajatan, and the a glimpse of how damaged thura is being a prisoner for so long and at one point accepting her brothers would never save her. She has a long road of healing ahead of her.

I like The Last Kingdom better than Vikings now; even being a long time fan, (watched since season 1 premiered on History channel) I have to admit, Vikings is declining, while TLK gets better and better.

The reason episode 4 feels like a season finale is that each season is made up of the narrative of 2 books. Kjartan's death was the ending of Book 3 "The Lords of the North" in Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories, and episodes 5 - 8 being made from Book 4 "Sword Song".

I know this is years late but I think part of the way through each season of this will feel like finales 'cause they're the end of books. So after this episode book 3 ends and then book 4 was eps 5-8. It looks like they must have done books 5, 6 and 7 in season 3; books 8, 9 and 10 in season 4; books 11, 12 and 13 in season 5. Also from what I can see each book has a different subject/theme or problem for Uhtred to solve but with the general idea continuing of him trying to get Bebbanburg Castle back.

@@ducksauce9187 A lot of the names like Ragnar come from the novels. In the books, Ubbe, Halfdan and Ivar the Boneless are refered to as "sons of Lothbrok" rather than sons of Ragnar to avoid confusion.

It's not *that* Rollo. The Rollo of the show Vikings would be pretty old by this point. (The timeline is closer to the real-life Rollo who became Duke of Normandy, though I doubt they'll add that to his character in this show...you know...him being dead and all).

Hi Sithfuron, lovng your reactions, love the shows you choose many of my favs!! Watching one of my favs now Gomorrah im highly recommending it,obviously nobody reacts to it because its subtiltled so it must be difficult, but you could try it in your down time, sky have got the 4 seasons in the box sets at the moment, I promise you will love it but its not for the weak hearted it is very gritty, and violent on times right up your alley im sure!! LOL
