GMC was first among American truck makers with a gasoline V6. But does this 1967 GMC EM5700 have the 305, 351, 401 or 478 cubic inch version? Only the S.P.I.D. knows for sure. What’s a S.P.I.D.? Watch and see!

Extended bumpers were also popular with large fleets back in the day. In the event of a minor crash, they were much cheaper to replace than a fiberglass hood

My neighbor used to have one of these trucks for farm use. I used to borrow it from him to haul firewood in the late 80s. It had a steel dump bed with wooden sides. We would load it down heavily, and it would do just fine. It didn't break any speed records, but it would take you and bring you home. It was a reliable truck that you could count on. My neighbor had that truck from the early 70s into the early 90s.

Hi Steve. Love the junkyard crawl. Watch every day. Surprised U didn't mention the 2-speed rear axle. An interesting feature providing 10-speeds forward. (And 2-speeds reverse I'd guess, but I never experimented during the short time I drove a "5 and 2" before moving to a 13-speed Roadranger.)

Yep! Hi-Lo transmission so double the ‘speeds’. I drove the F700 Ford for a couple of years. Though I’m pretty sure I had to double clutch that baby. I once saw a guy at my company somehow force the transmission into a low gear on a downhill run going too fast with a full load in the back. Literally blew the bottom of the transmission housing out all over the road. My boss was….unhappy. (!)

You said 21,000lb rear springs makes this a ten ton truck in my estimation. And the 10:000 tires would be standard on a truck of this size. And the 2 speed rear end would let her whistle along at 60 mph. My old F800 ,5x2 with a 429 gas could easy do 60mph. GMC had a great idea with the spark plug location. My 429 liked a new set of “hi-heat” plug wires every couple years.

I had one of those that was a single axle dump with a 305. The engine got really tired and used lots of oil and had a huge amount of blowby. A regular customer of mine came in and was talking to me and told me he thought he had one of those engines in an old truck. I went and looked at it and gave him 200 bucks for it. Well when it was in my shop I noticed it had a dual thermostat housing. I kind of remembered that that meant something. I checked and it was a 478. That engine ran so good, so much torque I almost never had to shift down for anything

I still have my dad's '69 GMC grain truck with the 401 V6. Future project probably. My best memory was when I was 16 and my parents were shopping for a different station wagon. Dad would ride beside me as I gave prospective Celebrities and Cutlass-Cierras the 0-50 test (he wouldn't let me go 60, that would be speeding you know). All those 4 banger GM wagons took about 14 seconds. Dad sat next to me in the GMC and we did it in just under 12. I think I started in 3rd High. That thing would run circles around his other truck with the 350 Chevy.

Hi Steve, great video on this GMC truck and V6 engine. My only experience with the GMC V6 was in a 64 3/4 ton long wheel base panel truck. I bought it from a school bus and surplus auction. School bus yellow, and it had 2 vertical heavy gauge steel, padded with truck tires push bar. I was told it was used to push start buses, and that was its only job other than maybe a run to get parts, etc. It also had the sub-low 4spd transmission. It had no rust and perfect body. Sold it to a rock/punk band, and the spray canned the thing black with the bands name on the door. It probably got 8-10mpg. The GMC truck my grandfather had one, but I believe it was a late 70s early 80s model, and it had the Detroit 2 stroke V8 "screamin jimmy." He used it to pull a low boy equipment trailer. Those 2-stroke were cool, sounding for sure, and easily identifiable. You could hear him a few miles away coming up through town, trying not to be a nuisance. 2 straight pipes sticking up in the sky with a trail of black smoke with each gear change. One yr he used it in the town's Christmas parade. He played Santa that yr with my uncle driving the GMC. You could see the tall chrome stacks off in the distance, bringing up the rear of the parade puffing black smoke like a darn dragon coming down Main. My grandfather was a big man. His hand was almost double the size of an average man. If he grabbed you, it was his decision, not yours, on what direction you were heading to next. It's probably why he liked Imperials and Big Chryslers so much plenty of room to move around in. Stay warm up there Steve last I looked it was 8° in Massachusetts, and never got above °0 in Maine. Burrr 🥶 Have a blessed day, everyone, Namaste 🙏🏼

Last fall, I couldn't believe my ears as I saw the leaf pickup crew doing their thing in my neighborhood. I had to go outside and interrupt the driver of the box truck they stuff leaves in. Looked to be an early 80s international, but the sound is what got me. Good ol 2 stroke Detroit purring away. I basically said I haven't heard that sound on the road in years, and I hope you guys are doing whatever you can do keep that old girl going. They said they were, and it doesn't go out in snow and only gets used during leaf season. Tbh it looked in really good shape ,no body rust and shiny paint. They seem to take pride in the ol girl, it was all shiny and nice like a fire department keeps their trucks.

@@chrisscearce I'm down in the 12603 area in the Hudson Valley area , Friday night early Saturday morning I saw -7 out at my shop at around 1am, back at the house it was like -5. It was brutal in my unheated shop, it was 38 in there last week but dropped to 25 the other night. I'll deal with 38, I work outside , and there's no wind on me inside but 25 was a little rough. Goofy weather ,im actually going to open the main door when I'm there as it's going to be mid 40s and close to 50 this week. Then from that low on Saturday morning until now the temp kept rising,even overnight. It's like 43 out now. I'm just glad we didn't have a long spell of that! Friday at work was a little rough,I'm relabeling it Monday as it was like 11 out with a 30mph wind and I got blasted by a rupturing block heater hose at my last stop, man I couldn't wait to get the heck home. I don't mind the cold and working outside, I'm usually good till down around 15-20 as far as comfortable yet able to move decently from not too many layers, and keep that stupid wind away 😁 35 degrees? After getting broke in by a cold snap like that, I can wear a Tshirt ,thermal over that and a sweatshirt and I'm fine (as long as the wind stays away).

@MrTheHillfolk Hi, you have to love the Detroit 2-stroke. A very distinctive sound that's legendary, much like the sound of 5.0 Mustang, Harley-Davidson, etc. You know what it is before you see it. If you're like myself, I'll wait to see what colour it is. 🤓 The GMC, my grandfather, had jack-knife on him after a chain or binder gave up, and the dozer on back shifted in a small curve it was just before dawn. The rd was dry, but there was a frozen patch leftover from the day before that probably didn't help any. It was a sad sight when they dropped it off. Luckily, it wasn't the driver's side that got busted up. But no more twin stacks. The old truck was used on his farm, making short runs until it was sold to a saw mill for a yard truck. I don't think it was street legal after the accident. It was orange and white and the only thing chromed were the stacks, grab handle and door handles. It was always clean like the rest of the equipment. Thanks for commenting 🙂 Namaste 🙏🏼

SPID stands for "Service Parts ID" (IDentification). Yup, the GMC trucks of this vintage were unique creatures. That's "West Coast" mirror where you stumbled a bit on the RPO description. I think SR might mean "Senior" type mirror. Notice the style of the RPO codes. Later on, the extra digits would be dropped. So, C41002 would eventually be shortened to "C41" which is still the style of RPO codes GM uses today. Another thing of note is that this has "Special" paint so it may have been a fleet color or some sort of unique paint code not on the standard paint chart. Ford does this today and it's called "DSO paint" (District Special Order). A lot of those paint codes would start with "W" on a Ford versus their normal two digit paint codes. You have to order a small group of say five trucks to get "special paint" from them. Correct, the 305 V6 was used through the 1974 model year and then it was dropped. Correct, also front bumpers are extended for various applications that are installed up front (fire and rescue for hose bed bumpers, PTO installations, winches, capstans, etc.). GM knew that these trucks would be used for various vocations and that's why they offered various "upfit" options to make it easier. That still holds true today. No, 21,000# is a little more than 10 tons (2,000 # per ton), but that's not the payload capacity. That's the total "bank" of weight that you have in the rear. Any weight of the components (axles, springs, etc.) all takes away from that "bank". The total bank minus the curb weight is the payload capacity. The vehicle can never weight more than the GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) or the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), or it is overloaded. The springs could be rated at 21K, but if the tires, axles and all other components are rated less, the decal on the door jamb for the GAWR and GVWR is rated at the lowest rated component or the "weakest link in the chain". I have caught many mistakes over the years by both OEMs and upfitters where they make errors on these ratings. I recently caught an issue on some Ford F-550 chassis whereby the vendor made an error and forgot to order them with the "68M" Payload upgrade package. When you do that, you get an 18K GVWR, not a 19.5K GVWR which is the maximum that you can get for an F-550. Hard to read the VIN on the SPID, so without the full VIN, we can't win, but the "M" denotes gasoline V6, 57 is the general model/wheelbase of the truck (this one is 191" according to the SPID), 0V for cab and chassis, possible B for Baltimore, MD assembly (hard to see and it ran off the label when it was originally printed), C for 1967 model year, and the rest is the production sequence. The Baltimore, MD plant operated from 1935 to 2005 and the Astro and Safari were the last vehicles assembled there before it closed.

Over the decades people saved and rebuilt Coupes, some four doors and wagons, but mostly cars. Not a lot of people really thought to save these machines and restore them to their original glory. Like the GMC V-6 family, they were truck-only engines, engineered strictly for torque and eternal lifetime. A 534 weighed over 1,200#. Truly truck engines that never had any business in passenger cars. Just to give an idea, assuming the Chevy V-8 305 weighed about 600lbs max, and was built to rev high and race strong, the GMC V-6 305 weighed about 1,000lbs, built strictly to power trucks.

Those engine's had very good low end torque and they held up pretty well I owned a 1967 three quarter ton 4by4 GMC pickup it had the 305 v6 in it, it was a bruiser in low range that thing could climb a tree, it was slow on the highway but it was great off road truck.

First HD v-6 I came across was in an old GMC p/u. Such a basic piece of cast iron. Cool old truck. Like a '58 or nine. Double headlights with the heavy eyebrows. Sinister lookin'.

As Steve mentions, the biggest version of the Hercules V-6 family was a 478-cid V-6. I think it was rated at 440 ft-lbs Max Torque at 1400 rpm.... Think about that for a minute......you'd reach maximum torque basically right as you pulled away from the traffic light..... Purely a truck engine, and a great design at that.

Hey Steve; Maybe when you're felling better you could do a video on the GMC V12. It had another name. Something like the "Double" or "Twin" V6. It was basically the engine you interviewed here but had its own Block, Crank & Camshaft. Get Better Dude, we are all looking forward to seeing you again.

I rode on mid sixties Blue Bird V6 GMC school buses back in the 70s. They have a sound that was unique. I had the good fortune of owning a 1961 GMC 1 ton dually rack body truck with a 305 V6 back in the nineties. Very cool, very fun truck, but not up to pulling a car trailer. It pulled great, but practical top speed was about 55 mph. I replaced that with a 1987 C2500 454 Suburban. What a difference that was..Wish I could have kept them both.

I had a 1966 K 30 Chevy with a GMC 351 and an Eaton 4 speed with a Lo 1st. Holy crap that thing made some torque. Definitely carried many times more than it’s own weight. It only had a lock on the driver door too along with 7.00 X 18” Budd wheels.

I’m sure that has a 2 speed rear axle in it. Fun to drive. Shift every gear twice. If your a cowboy?.
@willhorting5317
@willhorting5317 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't necessary to "shift every gear twice". Even with a super-heavy load of wheat, you simply went up through the gears, with the 2-speed in low. Then after you had the transmission in main high (whether it was 4th, or 5th, whichever you had), then switch the 2-speed to the high side and you were golden.

The two speed vacuum operated rear end was a low and high for each gear. The shifter only moved thru the shift pattern one time. My dad drove them trucks for work, double clutched all gears. I suspect double clutching was not necessary, due to syncronized gears but helped to slow down gear shifts.

I drove a 1965 GMC stake truck with the flat bed. It was my first job out of High School working for a metal fabricating company. I was 18(1971). The truck had a 4 speed trans with an inline 6 cyl engine. Usually started off in 2nd gear as 1st was just too low.

Moving trucks of this era used to have a box extension over the cab to the front bumper also supported by struts up from the frame behind the bumper . For storing blankets or smaller more fragile items away from the jolts of the rear wheels

I had a 60 GMC school bus that was converted into a camper that had the 305 V6, 5 spd, and 2 spd rearend. That thing was a torque monster and with the rearend in low range it could about pull a mountain onto its side yet with the rearend in high range it sipped gas and would push that big bus to over 100 mph .

Also the 348 Chevy started life as a diesel engine design that is how it come to have flat plane heads and combustion.chambers in the Pistons. It just didn't make it into cilvian production as a diesel . but they were used in commercial use in diesel form and are a very rare find . The gmc diesel version was known as the toroflow v6 and also the v8 of the engine design in diesel.

My neighbor had one of these trucks. Last I remember it was hooked up to a big propane tanker that he used to haul anhydrous ammonia. I believe his truck had a Screaming Jimmy. Also if you notice the knob on the gear shift was for the two speed rear end giving this truck ten forward speeds instead of just five.
