PaleyFest LA 2021 sponsored by Citi and Verizon. Stars and creatives of HBO's Six Feet Under (Alan Ball, Robert Greenblatt, David Janollari, Alan Poul, Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Lauren Ambrose, Frances Conroy, Freddy Rodriguez, and Rachel Griffiths) gather with moderator Lynette Rice at PaleyFest LA 2021 to celebrate their show and its twentieth anniversary. Topics include: how Ball's time as a youth in funeral homes influenced the pilot script; Ball's secret for creating indelible characters; the on-set practical jokes involving "cadavers"; how the ongoing relationship between Michael C. Hall's David and Mathew St. Patrick's Keith proved groundbreaking; Ball's determination to write female characters that weren't defined by the men in their lives; the stereotype-free depiction of Latinx leads Freddy Rodriguez's Rico and Justina Machado's Vanessa; how Ball planned the memorable series finale; and the show's effectiveness twenty years later.

David's death was especially poignant for me because, in seeing Keith as part of his near-death experience, it informed me that since we see our loved ones on the other side waiting for us, that means you never truly know who your true love is until you die. Which, of course, is way too late.

The show made it clear that David and Keith were definitely in love and were together at least up until when Claire left home. There’s no reason to think they weren’t still together after that, until Keith was killed about 20 years later. If someone asked who I would guess old David would see just before he died, it would have been Keith.

Saw the series when first out and it destroyed me then. (In a very good way). Just re-watching the series now in March 2022 and the familial bonds, humanity and moments of tenderness between characters feel particularly poignant and comforting in these strange, strange times we live in. My partner is seeing it for the first time, and it gives me such pleasure watching her devour the show wide-eyed, and go with the rollercoaster of each storyline and character arc. During the pandemic, it’s become possible to become overwhelmed with high quality streamed dramas, but SFU ALWAYS stands out as the very best - even 20 years on. And for me - the beauty of SFU has always been that while on the surface it deals with death, all of life’s experiences that happens before it - the good and the bad - are so, so vital and vibrant in their imperfections; and all human failures and frailty are just part of who we are. And that that’s ok because it all shapes us and brings us home to one another. For sure, as Frances Conroy says here, people create new bonds and find new friends because of the universality they find on SFU. Ultimately - this show was made with love and that shines through, and is the feeling I am always left with. ❤️

I'm 63 and we're both happily amicably divorced now but both of us had to deal with the deaths of our Parents in the time vicinity of this show. We had both just moved to Europe and I was feeling the first spark of myself as a success making things happen and experiencing creative success. THANK YOU for this reunion. Rewatching from age 33 then again at 53. is such a deep feeling of how special it is then and now. It's ability to have been so organically groundbreaking and relevant here and NOW, still blows my mind. It really feels as if it saw the future.

I watched this show for the first time this year and after watching the first 2 seasons I told my mum I didn't like Brenda and she looked so offended because she had already seen the show before. But after watching the rest I definitely Changed my opinion and she for sure became one of the best on the show.

Well I watched this with a grin on my face from start to finish. So wonderful to see everyone together and hear their stories. Their affection for the show seems completely genuine, which means a lot because this show has been part of my life. I've loved Six Feet Under for 20 years, since I was a wee 14 year old. My only sadness is that they couldn't do the panel in person. But honestly, thank you for making it happen. Also, Lauren Ambrose still looks SO beautiful! She's a treasure. Shame her career stalled, she deserves better.

Me and my fiancée just finished the series ... the final episodes had us both in tears. This show is truly one of the best things I've ever seen on television and I've watched a lot of tv. The actors and their performances, the story telling, the way you can relate, there's so many layers I can't sum them all up. This show is definitely gonna stay with me forever ❤

You can see the genuine love and emotion they all had for each other. It must have been a glorious expererience as actors and artists to have been a part of an experience that touched so many lives. It affected me personally, especially the beginning of each show where the 2 clasped hands are suddenly pulled apart. I had recently lost my husband and that's exactly what it felt like. It was unexpected and hit me hard, yet the show helped me in many ways.

Always loved this show. A few yrs later my dad died on his own. Found in his bathtub. I experienced the grief madness first hand. To this day I don't really know what happened to him, despite inquests. Of the three headed beast of TV at that time, The Sopranos, The West Wing and Six Feet Under, Six Feet is the best and all three are amazing.

Am so sorry that happened to you man. I lost my mom on Oct 3 2012. This is yr 12 and am still not over it. You never get over the death of a loved one. But tge grief lessons with time, talking to a close friend or a professional to help navigate you thru the stages of grief. And being with someone who loves you unconditionally and allows u to work thru your grief no matter how long it is.

I had an experience about 5 years ago. my mom was in the hospital suffering from multiple pelvic fractures. She hadn't fallen, it was due to her osteoporosis. But, at that time, she seemed to have given up. I was very stressed out...and out of the corner of my eye, it seemed as if I saw the ghostly images of my dad & my oldest brother. I felt certain that Mom was slipping away. Turns out, she lasted 3 more years....and I sadly & always will regret that I wasn't there) when she finally slipped away, as Ruth Fisher did.....but without any of her 4 surviving children present. It's been more than 8 months now...and I have come to grips that, just like both of my grandmothers, they chose to leave alone. I'm almost 59....her "baby" and as much as I mourn her passing, I've reached that level of acceptance....because, at 91, she was ready to go. (not unlike Ruth Fisher)

The surreal "day dreams", the dead characters ranging from terrifying to tragic to hilarious - each one bringing their own lesson, the perfect distribution of real estate for the characters - each ep focusing on each of the family members the perfect amount, and ultimately the INSANE amount of drama the family members all went through. Those things, along with the acting, the music, the cinematography - really made this show memorable for me.

Best show ever, great cast, writing, everything. Brilliant. Love you guys!!! ...my first thought was I felt sorry for Ruth, then Brenda but I think I felt most sorry for David. And Michael played that role perfect. David had so much to overcome and it was still a time of judgement of one's sexuality. Brenda because she had lived a tormented life since childhood. And Ruth as a mother with so much loss, grief and constantly holding on to her sense of self. :-)

*Such a pity that such a milestone in TV history, a series that made TV series an art form litterally, apparently couldn't have a real beautiful celebration with everyone in a room, as opposed to a multi-channel Zoom session with a shitty sound all over... Such a pity... Please Alan Ball or anyone, try and make a REAL 1-hour + documentary with all these people around that seminal series ! Six Feet Under deserved way, way better than this really !!!!... But that's better than nothing I suppose...*
