Awesome bike! My Father talked me into buying mine and I'm so glad he did. I bought a new 2020 and after 7000 miles, it's just been a solid dual sport. I've been watching some videos on the Husqvarna 901 and the KTMs... all those videos have been, "6000 mile review and it's great, but watch out for this oil leak/coolant leak/electronics fail/fuel issues..." and I'm sitting here with "7000 miles on the DR and I swapped the seat and tires.... because I wanted to..." Such a great bike.

I have had 2 Dr650s. The one I have now is a 2020. I changed out the death wings for the Dunlop 606 front and rear. I changed the front sprocket to one less tooth. Added the akropovick slip on pipe. I changed the seat out to a concept seat. The carb has a 150 jet with the needle and airbox mod. The bike is now a night and day different bike. More power then I could've imagined.

Congrats brother !!! - The "current" model goes back to 1996 - You will love it. You have a blank canvas, and can build that bike up to whatever you want, or need it to do. In my opinion, THE MIGHTY SUZUKI DR 650 is the best Dual Sport bike on the planet !!! The "Aussies" love them in the outback !!!

This version of the DR650 came out in '96. I bought my first one in '05, and bought my new one in '21. I have always liked the DR650 better than any other dual sport out there. I've ridden everything from long distance highway miles, to very rugged Colorado mountain trails, and it's great at everything. A friend of mine has an XR650L and I've ridden it quite a bit too, and it's also a great bike, but I like the DR better, it's smoother and rides better and doesn't get hot like the XR does.

I purchased a 2004 DR650 several years ago for the same reasoning. Still have it and am going through some performance upgrades. (TM40 carb, Cogent suspension) Simple, non-flashy, reliable, tractor power. You'll find many how-to videos for maintenance and items that should be addressed. I've been using ProCycle for my upgrades and have no complaints with them.

Best bike ever! Not flashy is right but I never thought about it, I always thought they were cool. I rode by a neighbors house on my new DR a few months ago with my new Aceribis tank and Sargeant seat and he says, "whoa, that thing is spotless, how did you keep it so nice, what year is that?!" I said 2022 He said oh, it's so old fashioned🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@precipiceofgrind It's pretty simple but I think I will get a better petcock or use the stock one as soon as my gas runs out, it's kinda cheap. There are a couple hoses to plug/remove to the carb from the evap system unless using the stock petcock. You can use the stock petcock by modifying the tank which I'll probably do.

Great video, thank you I'm in Australia and we can't buy them anymore so I'm glad you managed to buy one new I've only just started getting into bikes and I'm so annoyed at the timing as I would've bought one new too if I'd known they were being phased out Used, these are going for $1,000 AUD more than a brand new crf300L so I'm really not sure what to do 😂

Man, what a shame you can't get new DR650s in Australia anymore. I was curious if you could purchase used ones, guess you answered that for me. My 300L has a certain niche for me and deep backcountry travel in the desert, I prefer it's lighter weight but it sure ain't no DR650. Good luck my friend!

Our laws don't make any sense because you can still buy the drz400e new but have heard that it's not very good at cruising at 60mph so it's hard for me to seriously consider it We can't even get the klx300 because it hasn't got ABS. I was comparing the crf to the klx equivalent (230s and 250) and there seems to be a big difference in build quality (in the klx's favour). I've seen a lot of posts on the crf forums about foot peg welds snapping off and the engine randomly turning off when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd so that doesn't give me much confidence with the Honda In a perfect world suzuki can learn from kawasaki and give the DR fuel injection like the KLR. ABS too so I can actually buy it aha

I have owned a DR650 and I agree with your reasoning/justification for purchasing the bike. I am definitely wanting to puchase another DR650 sometime in the next year or two as I cannot see it being in Suzuki's lineup for too much longer, at least in current form. Interestingly, I am picking up a new 2023 Kawasaki KLR 650 (non ABS) today for $6541.92 out the door. Kawasaki is having a $1000.00 off promotion unitl 03/31. I searched for a new DR in my area and could not find one for any less than $8000.00 out the door.

I really liked this video and, as a Mexican living in Mexico, I can tell you have given every reason why one should not bring this bike "south of the border and beyond" if being mugged is your concern. In a few words these are the kind of bikes that "spoters" or "hawks" look for when doing their "errand running" for the cartels... Reliable, simple, easy to service, etc... Sad but true... ¿Algún otro mexicano que esté de acuerdo?

my brother had both the Xr650l and Dr650 at the same time and both are very good bikes. The XR was cool to get out and act like a hooligan, doing wheelies and such. But, it was so tall and anything other than a short stint on the road and it wasn't very good. Between the two I always preferred to ride the DR. The lack of a cush drive in the rear hub of the Xr650 made for buzzy for lack of a better word, on the highway. Not to mention it could be very hard to start at times, which I think was a result of the factory jetting in 2016. Either both very good bikes, but I prefer the DR and KLR. Also, I thought they had discontinued the DR, but I realized it's still available and like you I think for the price of used ones, I will be looking at a new one to park beside my KLR

I know buying new is nice and I almost did that with the XT250 I just bought. I don't have unlimited funds like you seem to have so crunching the numbers, I went used. It was about $500.00 less than new BUT I didn't have to pay all the extras that dealers get on new bikes. A new XT would put me close to 7K and the used 2020 with 192 miles on it kept me under 5K. I still believe used is the way to go. But that's just me.

If I take this bike on the TAT, do I have to rejet the carb, I’m hearing no. So I think some passes are 12-14,000 feet. That is the reason I went with the klx 300. But would rather have the DR, because of fuel injection. I just don’t want any issues, riding solo. Your thoughts?
@precipiceofgrind

I honestly don't know. I have a 100 miles riding experience on my DR650 since it's so new and my other bikes are fuel injected. I would presume my bike might have some issues going from where I'm at at 3000ft to 12,000ft but I could be wrong. I'm going to have to learn as well.

A correctly tuned DR with the stock BST40, whether it has the 6F19 needle, or an aftermarket jet kit should work fine at most any elevation on the TAT. Mine with a JD Jet kit did just fine. In fact, my mileage improved at higher elevations and power was adequate while fully loaded for camping.
