I have Sarracenia flava 'Maxima' from Adrian Slack , Marston Exotics, bought 40 years ago! Mine grows to 90cm/3 feet, and has a little patch of red inside the hood 😊
@2728Alexis2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 'Maxima' is a nice form of variety flava. The cultivar name would be invalid if you tried to register it today.

Wow! Do you ever offer divisions?

Lovely! Is it ok to add a small amount of worm castings to the mix for sarracenia?
@SarraceniaNorthwest9 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Sarracenia require soil that is acidic and very low in nutrients. Worm castings will make the soil alkaline and add nutritents that will burn the plants' roots. You can read more about Sarracenia care on on our website. www.growcarnivorousplants.com/sarracenia-care/ www.growcarnivorousplants.com/carnivorous-plant-videos/

Are the up tipped lip ends an indication for flava?

Yes! That's one of the common features of flava.

V. flava, v. ornata, v. rugelii, v. cuprea, v. rubricorpora, v. altropurpurea, v. maxima. Six. Maths.

Congratulations! You're the first to comment about that. We were wondering how long it would take for someone to mention that. We didn't include the typical form (S. flava flava) as a variety. It's sort of like in music with a theme and variations. The flava varieties are variations on the typical form. So, we have the typical or base form and six varieties or variations of the base form. We didn't explain that in the video, so we understand the confusion. But, you're the first to mention.
@sic22l9 ай бұрын
@@SarraceniaNorthwest Well technically S. flava var. flava is still a variation, it's in the name (flava varietes flava). PS. When I first saw the notification I almost ignored it, it looked like spam ;)

And that is the problem with the nomenclature system. It doesn't have a method to identify a typical or common form. Instead, it repeats the species name and identifies it as a variety of itself. A theme as a variation? Rather clumsy manner of labeling. It's like going to a restaurant and ordering toast toast to make it clear you're not ordering French toast! Perhaps botanists prefer that reduncy. But, our target audience consists of hobbyists and casual gardeners, not botanists. So, we stand by our position that there are six varieties based on the typical form. (I think we mention that in the video.) If you still insist on following the rules, please be mindful that the rules of grammar require you to say "Maths are essential!" Exceptions abound, even in nomenclature.
@sic22l8 ай бұрын
@@SarraceniaNorthwest Thing is - can you even say there is a typical form with all varietes being so widespread and often three or more of them growing next to each other?
@SarraceniaNorthwest8 ай бұрын
Yes, I can, and we did. When botanists label a plant flava var. flava, they're essentially saying that that particular form is the base or typical form. Again, they're using a species name to label a species as a variety of itself. Toast toast. It's all semantics. Base, theme, typical, stereotypical. If you want to call each form a variety and do away with words like typical or base form, then by all means do so. But, for the purpose of our videos, we have to describe things in common language so that non-botanists can relate to what we say. The video isn't about populations, so I don't see any need to dive into a philosophical debate about what is typical, normal, thematic, or base. The video is about the variations that occur within Sarracenia flava, and we chose to call flava var. flava the typical form, the theme upon which six variations are created. This helps new growers see the different patterns within the species.
