Sole of a Boat, Wooden Boat Pilot House. SDP Ep. 64

In order to prepare the engine room for additional epoxy work, I decided to build the pilot house sole, directly above the engine room, in order to enclose the space so it could be heated. The process involved some standard woodworking joinery including dovetails, half-lap joints and dado's. It was a bit complex for an amateur like me but it was a lot of fun machining and fitting all the lumber.
This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.

Uhm...wow. That's a lot of work for the PH sole! Good job! After watching this I am glad I built in Steel ;). Also I put my PH sole in as soon as the two bulkheads and frame within the PH so that the sole LOCKED those frames square. Then could use those as a reference to square the rest of the frames , so i was surprised your just now putting this in. Thanks for sharing

I've just spread some leftover epoxy on a patch for fairing later and it to 3 days to fully cure in daytime temps of 7 degrees C. Good advice on measuring. Loved the joinery, The Admiral looks very capable , to the point that I wonder if she hasn't done a bit of wood butchering herself over the years..... Happy new year.

Most of the Totalboat epoxy products seem to need about 55 degrees F to cure reasonably quickly. However I've read varying opinions on how low temperature curing can affect strength of the cured epoxy. Given enough time, all properly mixed epoxy will cure but it seems likely that low temperature curing does impact strength. I wouldn't worry about it for fairing or filets but just my 2 cents. And my girl knows how to handle herself on the job site no doubt.

I'm not sure about gluing all of these joints together. Boats need to flex a lot. Most bolts use similar joinery, but bolt everything together for future service and it allows some flexibility. A have never seen this recommended in any boat building boat.

Don't know what cops get paid, but always heard they were almost as underpaid as teachers. Just wondering how you fit this into your budget if you're retired already, at a relatively early age? Must have made some great investments or "The Admiral" makes good money. Anyway, nice bit of progress in this video. no specific details on sole framing are indicated for the pilot house. That's true in a lot of the parts of boat plans. dimensions and requirements are indicated but specifics are often left to the builder.
