In this tutorial I show how to wire a Strat with the HSS (humbucker, 2 single coils) set up using a Strat superswitch to coil split the humbucker.
The HSS Strat setup confuses many people because the aim is to find the right combination of 250k/500k pots and 0.022/0.047 capacitors.
In this setup I actually use both - and 470k resistors added to the circuit trick the single coils into seeing 250k volume and the humbucker 500k volume.

I recently did this wiring on a Strat I'm building. Great tutorial. Don't make the mistake I made and make sure you're using 470k ohm resistors and not 470 ohm resistors. I found out right away when I tested the pickups and my singles were very muted. I am still waiting for my capacitor for the treble bleed circuit. I ordered my CTS pots from you. I'm the customer who's shipment to the states made a detour to Kuwait and then Milan, Italy, then back to the states. Thank you for your excellent response and customer service for my order.

what the wattage and tolerance of the 470k resistors are you using?

When dealing with those types of components you MUST pay attention to the details. You kind of have to think like a scientist where in certain situations, precision is the only way to achieve the goal. The way I do it is I literally repeatedly check up to 10 times the instructions and exactly where I’m supposed to solder
@TheSmleist

Those 470k resistors look like 2 or 3 watt. Wouldn't like 1/2 or 1/4 watt do the job. Not much power going through this circuit so I would think it would be ok as long as it 470 k.

One more piece of constructive critique. Because you added the resistors into the circuit, which I am really intrigued by for wanting to adjust the overall tone of the Strat I’ve been working on, it would be very, very helpful if you could provide a before and after video of the tone/sound of your completed Strat.

I like how you did the work and position wise this setup makes total sense. One thing though, might want to change the numbering scheme on the switch drawings so as to match the standard switch positions with the connections being made. However, there might be those that like to put the bridge at the far end and the neck in board and it probably doesn't make too big a difference. Just thought I'd mention it. Thank you.

This diagram is great, thank you so much bro, BTW it results Fender and Seymour Duncan use different polarities so you get a hum cancelling effect.This should be taken on consideration when combining pickup brands or when using vintage pickup models

Hi Alfredo, I'm a Newbie when I switch to single coil and humbucker combined selection, I lose volume is that because of the polarities. I also have Fender single coil and Seymour Duncan humbucker. When you changed the black hot wire with the green what do you do with the black hot wire. thanks in advance.
@alfredoabrego3474
@alfredoabrego3474 2 жыл бұрын
@@vasco2109 Hi, there will always be a difference in volume when combining single coils and humbuckers, a remedy to this is to use hotter single coils or colder humbuckers. This is a fairly complicated circuit so when I wrote this comment I got confused and all I did by swapping the wires was to make the polarity of the pickups the same so I actually eliminated the hum cancelling feature of RWRP (Reverse Winding Reverse Polarity pickups), but if you want a more in depth explanaiton of why that happened I invite you to read the following information I took from Seymour Duncan´s official page: Every pickup coil has two properties that affect how they will sound when they are combined with others. These properties are called phase and polarity. Phase is the direction current travels through the pickup, and polarity is the direction of the magnetic field. With both properties, there are only two options. Phase can either be “top coming” or “top going”, and polarity can either be “south” or “north.” A typical application of these principles is with single coil pickups. One interesting property of single coils is that depending on their phase and polarity, it may be possible for them to be hum cancelling when combined. Modern Fender guitars are typically wired in such a way. The key to a strong, full tone with hum cancelling is to combine single coil pickups that have both opposite phase and opposite polarity. If one pickup is north polarity, top going, the other must be south polarity, top coming. This is why most Strat middle pickups and Tele neck pickups are what is known as reverse wind, reverse polarity, or RWRP for short. With a RWRP middle pickup in a Strat, for example, you will get hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 on a 5-way switch. Humbuckers all operate on this principle. The two coils have opposite wind and opposite polarity. When combined, you get a fat, meaty tone and no hum. Splitting a humbucker will, of course, bring back the hum so when combining Seymour Duncan "single coils" and Fender single coils you have to have in mind that Seymour’s regular pickups are equivalent to Fender’s RWRP, and vise versa so you will get a hum cancelling effect It all started when Seymour decided to base his single coils on the original Fender single coils from the 1950’s, which were south, top going. At some point in the 60’s, Fender decided to change their single coils to be north, top coming. The most common reason for two single coils to be out of phase is that one of them is wired backwards. The lead that was supposed to be connected to ground is connected to the output, and vise versa. If you get phase cancellation when combining two single coils, the easiest cure is to swap the lead wires on one of them (not both, or you will just have the same problem). Bottom line: if you want two coils to be in phase and hum cancelling, you will need one of them - and only one of them - to be RWRP.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned it but at 25 minutes 20 seconds you talk about connecting a wire to the switch from the volume control when you actually connect a wire from tone control number one to the switch. The schematic is correct but your words that you spoke were wrong. Just in case someone new was watching and hooked up the wrong thing based on what you said and not following the nice wiring diagram you provided.

Outer single coils 3. Both HB 4. Inner single coils 5. Neck HB What I want to add is two concentric or stacked pots where I can blend in the HB. For example in the usual volume knob position, the lower knob to control master volume as it is now. The upper concentric knob to be used to blend in the neck HB. For the tone knob, again the main knob to control the tone and the smaller knob to blend in the bridge HB. Can this be done? I'm just not sure how to wire in the blends for the HBs. Is it possible to combine this wiring with the 9-way wiring, using push-pull pots, so that all of the 9 ways are available, but also having option of the bridge pickup being either full or split coil? Also, will the option of middle coil & bridge split coil be humbucking? Last...if the combination of 9-way push-pull (tones) & Super Strat wiring is possible, will the option of neck & bridge pickup split be humbucking? I ask this because it is my understanding that the middle S pickup on Strats is reverse wound from the bridge & neck single-coil pickups. But, would it be reverse from the single split coil of a humbucker bridge pickup??? And, if not, is this achievable by reversing the hookup of the "start" & "finish" bridge pickup wires???

I made an hhh strat with 3 volume pots and one tone with spare pots and buckers a decade ago. Some were linear pots so I bought some new cts 250k pots, an ssh pickguard to upgrade it and put in a couple wilkinson pups. I like being able to have all 3 pups on at once but at different levels but it has a issue with one the middle bucker staying on when all volumes are off. Maybe going back to a switch will make this easier.

What im trying to do is wire an hss, but coil split the humbucker, and then figure out how to have a TBX tone pot for the neck and middle, and finally an S1 switch for just the neck. First, is all of that overkill? Second, is it possible to have all 3 functional pots, and have it work cohesively?

I don't understand why this circuit needs 2 separate 470K resistors. Can't we just solder one resistor to the 4 lugs that are connected to the 250K tone pot (as seen in 24:48) ? Besides, on the diagram, I don't see for position 2 that the north and south finishes will be connected to ground (for the coil split). Isn't it missing ?

Have you ever wired an HSS up so that it is exclusively the series/parallel humcancelling positions? So 500k pots, 0.047 cap, on the blade P1=Neck and Middle in series, P2 Neck and Middle in Parallel, P3 Neck and South coil of the humbucker in parallel (Tele middle sound), P4=Middle and North coil of humbucker in parallel, P5=humbucker (series/parallel setting comes from DP/DT on second tone control. Seems this would be the more useful sounds from both a double HB guitar and the 3 SC Strat with a little Tele in there.

I have been trying to wrap my head around how the coil split on position two works, was wondering if you or someone could explain. since the north and south of the humbucker are soldered together and are both active in position 1 how does the switch know to only use one side in position 2 when it is combined with the middle pickup? If the two humbucker wires went to different terminals or something like that, I think it would make sense to me.

I'm only using one volume and only one tone (2 pots only = personal preference and big hands hit my volume if too close). I got a super switch too, but i don't know if it'll have enough poles or if i should look into something else, I looked into resistors and I'm drawing out my schematic... When i pair the tapped humbucker of the bridge with the middle single coil pickup, would the bridge benefit if it now jumped to a "250k" pot circuit, or should i keep it away from the resistors and only worry about the neck and middle pickups being "fooled" by the resistors. I was wondering since only one coil is activated instead of it being a full on humbucker. I have no problem with figuring out a schematic for this, but it's the tone and the output of the pickup i was worried about. Will it be better for a split humbucker (now a "single-coil") to be on a "250k" pot circuit then switch over to a 500k pot when both coils are activated? Maybe less harsh audibly? I've been doing this for years and I'm still learning, lol I just need an opinion and I can figure it out from here and i will start drawing out for myself. Thanks beforehand for reading my messy and convoluted questing that i probably could have shortened if i wasn't burnt out from brainstorming. lol

There are so many on Amazon to choose from. Could you possibly provide a little more input on what to look out for? Thank you in advance!

Would you recommend using linear pots on tone controls as well as volume.I have heard CT S pots are very loose and turn easily.

Excellent video! How about 1 single coil and 1 humbucker with 1 tone/1 volume and a Gibson style 3/way switch? What changes should I do to this wiring? Any suggestions please?

Hi there! I did that S.S. project and it came out perfect. I'm wondering if you have that same tutorial for a S.S.S. coils ? or is the same order for the 3 Single coils? Thanks 😊

Amazing and Thank you! One question: I'm building an HSH strat... where do the signal, ground, and north/south wires go from the neck pickup when it's a Humbucker? Thanks.

Your videos are the best, explains alot, but is there a way to incorporate this way for hss strat with a cts 500k audio taper push pull pot for a boost if up or something that won't leave the split coil without tone control or a blend/bleed between neck pos 5 or 4? Thanks again for putting the time and everything thing needed to make your vids happen, it's time consuming! Respect.

I'm planning to build a guitar for my son. He likes my music; 60s-80s. So my plan is a HHH Strat set up to split each humbucker and the have phase switches for each when playing the singles. So, three on-off-on switches to split each HB, and three switches to change the phase when in single. Much like the Red Special build by Brian May, and ability to use all three singles like David Gilmore, all three Humbuckers like John Lennon's Rickenbacker. I don't expect exact matches sound wise, just close. I know treble boosters and other mixers will be needed. I'm still looking for a good schematic for laying it out. Any help would be appreciated.

great video !!, i moded my HH '98 strat to HSS that way but while single coils sounds amazing, humbucker is a little bit too dark - any suggestions what can be done to improve it ?

Very cool, will this be the same wiring for mini humbucker single single? and what will be the treble bleed's cap/resistor value if it's added?

I know this is an old video but it was just what I was looking for. Will this work with a regular Fender 5 way switch? Meaning using the resistor method. The Fender switch doesn't have as many lugs

Why do you use unshielded wires to connect parts in such a tight configuration? Should this stuff be wrapped individually to help eliminate chance for electric interference?

I wired everything exactly as described (which was a bit weird because my guitar is a leftie). Checked the diagram multiple times, but i only have output on the humbucker. Both single coils are dead. Any ideas?
