In this tutorial I show how to wire a Strat with the HSS (humbucker, 2 single coils) set up using a Strat superswitch to coil split the humbucker.
The HSS Strat setup confuses many people because the aim is to find the right combination of 250k/500k pots and 0.022/0.047 capacitors.
In this setup I actually use both - and 470k resistors added to the circuit trick the single coils into seeing 250k volume and the humbucker 500k volume.
Wiring diagram: sixstringsupplies.co.uk/pages/hss-strat-wiring-diagram
Components used: (all components available here: sixstringsupplies.co.uk/collections/guitar-electronics)
- 500k/250 CTS TVT pots
- OAK Grigsby Superswitch
- Push back cloth wire
- 2 x 470k resistors
- 0.022uf capacitor
- 0.047 capacitor
Pickups:
Neck & middle - House of Tone 60s S-type
Bridge: Unknown generic from eBay

I recently did this wiring on a Strat I'm building. Great tutorial. Don't make the mistake I made and make sure you're using 470k ohm resistors and not 470 ohm resistors. I found out right away when I tested the pickups and my singles were very muted. I am still waiting for my capacitor for the treble bleed circuit. I ordered my CTS pots from you. I'm the customer who's shipment to the states made a detour to Kuwait and then Milan, Italy, then back to the states. Thank you for your excellent response and customer service for my order.

One more piece of constructive critique. Because you added the resistors into the circuit, which I am really intrigued by for wanting to adjust the overall tone of the Strat I’ve been working on, it would be very, very helpful if you could provide a before and after video of the tone/sound of your completed Strat.

This diagram is great, thank you so much bro, BTW it results Fender and Seymour Duncan use different polarities so you get a hum cancelling effect.This should be taken on consideration when combining pickup brands or when using vintage pickup models

Hi Alfredo, I'm a Newbie when I switch to single coil and humbucker combined selection, I lose volume is that because of the polarities. I also have Fender single coil and Seymour Duncan humbucker. When you changed the black hot wire with the green what do you do with the black hot wire. thanks in advance.
@alfredoabrego3474
@alfredoabrego3474 2 жыл бұрын
@@vasco2109 Hi, there will always be a difference in volume when combining single coils and humbuckers, a remedy to this is to use hotter single coils or colder humbuckers. This is a fairly complicated circuit so when I wrote this comment I got confused and all I did by swapping the wires was to make the polarity of the pickups the same so I actually eliminated the hum cancelling feature of RWRP (Reverse Winding Reverse Polarity pickups), but if you want a more in depth explanaiton of why that happened I invite you to read the following information I took from Seymour Duncan´s official page: Every pickup coil has two properties that affect how they will sound when they are combined with others. These properties are called phase and polarity. Phase is the direction current travels through the pickup, and polarity is the direction of the magnetic field. With both properties, there are only two options. Phase can either be “top coming” or “top going”, and polarity can either be “south” or “north.” A typical application of these principles is with single coil pickups. One interesting property of single coils is that depending on their phase and polarity, it may be possible for them to be hum cancelling when combined. Modern Fender guitars are typically wired in such a way. The key to a strong, full tone with hum cancelling is to combine single coil pickups that have both opposite phase and opposite polarity. If one pickup is north polarity, top going, the other must be south polarity, top coming. This is why most Strat middle pickups and Tele neck pickups are what is known as reverse wind, reverse polarity, or RWRP for short. With a RWRP middle pickup in a Strat, for example, you will get hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 on a 5-way switch. Humbuckers all operate on this principle. The two coils have opposite wind and opposite polarity. When combined, you get a fat, meaty tone and no hum. Splitting a humbucker will, of course, bring back the hum so when combining Seymour Duncan "single coils" and Fender single coils you have to have in mind that Seymour’s regular pickups are equivalent to Fender’s RWRP, and vise versa so you will get a hum cancelling effect It all started when Seymour decided to base his single coils on the original Fender single coils from the 1950’s, which were south, top going. At some point in the 60’s, Fender decided to change their single coils to be north, top coming. The most common reason for two single coils to be out of phase is that one of them is wired backwards. The lead that was supposed to be connected to ground is connected to the output, and vise versa. If you get phase cancellation when combining two single coils, the easiest cure is to swap the lead wires on one of them (not both, or you will just have the same problem). Bottom line: if you want two coils to be in phase and hum cancelling, you will need one of them - and only one of them - to be RWRP.

I like how you did the work and position wise this setup makes total sense. One thing though, might want to change the numbering scheme on the switch drawings so as to match the standard switch positions with the connections being made. However, there might be those that like to put the bridge at the far end and the neck in board and it probably doesn't make too big a difference. Just thought I'd mention it. Thank you.

Is it possible to combine this wiring with the 9-way wiring, using push-pull pots, so that all of the 9 ways are available, but also having option of the bridge pickup being either full or split coil? Also, will the option of middle coil & bridge split coil be humbucking? Last...if the combination of 9-way push-pull (tones) & Super Strat wiring is possible, will the option of neck & bridge pickup split be humbucking? I ask this because it is my understanding that the middle S pickup on Strats is reverse wound from the bridge & neck single-coil pickups. But, would it be reverse from the single split coil of a humbucker bridge pickup??? And, if not, is this achievable by reversing the hookup of the "start" & "finish" bridge pickup wires???

Love this. What component is in place to prevent the humbucker from losing volume/dynamics) when the spit is active? I know sometimes with push pull pots you pose some volume and depth when the Humbucker is split. PRS guitars come with a resistor jumped from the put to the back of the put instead of a wire. Great video mate cheers for posting. Question I'm currently making this mod to my fender strat but want to add a push/pill coil tap to the humbacker any ideas on A. best way to achieve this and B could I use a 470K resister on the split coil to get the single coil tone right? Appreciate your thoughts/.

Thank you! just a newbie here and would definitely use this as Guide, May I know if the pots you've used are Audio or Linear Taper type?

Great video! Can you tell me what size bus wire you used in the example? 20 gauge looks like.

I'm only using one volume and only one tone (2 pots only = personal preference and big hands hit my volume if too close). I got a super switch too, but i don't know if it'll have enough poles or if i should look into something else, I looked into resistors and I'm drawing out my schematic... When i pair the tapped humbucker of the bridge with the middle single coil pickup, would the bridge benefit if it now jumped to a "250k" pot circuit, or should i keep it away from the resistors and only worry about the neck and middle pickups being "fooled" by the resistors. I was wondering since only one coil is activated instead of it being a full on humbucker. I have no problem with figuring out a schematic for this, but it's the tone and the output of the pickup i was worried about. Will it be better for a split humbucker (now a "single-coil") to be on a "250k" pot circuit then switch over to a 500k pot when both coils are activated? Maybe less harsh audibly? I've been doing this for years and I'm still learning, lol I just need an opinion and I can figure it out from here and i will start drawing out for myself. Thanks beforehand for reading my messy and convoluted questing that i probably could have shortened if i wasn't burnt out from brainstorming. lol

😊😊😊 Last one, the soldering action in minute 12 will take you max 2-3 seconds completed with such a mentioned soldering station plus a good JBC tip (no pencil tip), you will def save plenty of time doing your work 😮😮😮

At 37:23 when you test the coil split why didnt you test the other coil to show silence? I was waiting for that because I just wired a superswitch as per a Dimarzio diagram and in position 4 where it is SUPPOSED to be coil cutting I get signal from both of my coils when I tap them. Was hoping to see what you got from your silenced coil

In the first position the 2 coils of the humbucker are in series, ie traditional humbucking output. In position 2 there is only one coil output as the other coil has ground on both sides. Which coil that is depends on which one you've selected. Unless otherwise noted Dimarzio's wiring scheme goes north coil, from hot to finish, red/black. The south coil is green/white. I hope that's of some help anyhow.

Its waesome wiring! what's this metal stem what you put connecting the three pots and the lugs? This wiring can be used like in Suhr guitars in the second position the humbucker works like a single coil? thanx buddy!
