Sixto Díaz Rodríguez (also known as Rodríguez or as Jesús Rodríguez; born July 10, 1942) is an American folk musician based in Detroit, Michigan. His career initially proved short-lived with two little-sold albums in the early 1970s and some brief touring in Australia. Unbeknownst to him, however, his work proved extremely successful and influential in South Africa, although he was mistakenly rumoured in that country to have committed suicide.
In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to seek out and contact him, leading to an unexpected revival of his musical career. Their story is told in the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man, which has also helped give Rodríguez a measure of fame in his native country.

Got into Rodriguez 40 years ago. After my young mum passed from pancreatic cancer. I was devastated as a teenager. Was lucky enough to source some LPs. A gentle, MOST humble man. His music, stunning lyrics, backing orchestras, simple presence and life gave us all much to learn from. A great poet and humanitarian. RIP beautiful soul. I shall miss you always. Thank you! 💜💜💜

Honestly The most under rated poet , truly humble, lyrical song writer of all times, in my opinion. He was and absolute legend in Australia. In a time when he started, no mobile phones or social media. So lucky to see him 3 times in concert. Ist time in Sydney when I was still at school at ripe young age of 16yrs old...ohh the memories of that night 🚬😄 & I still have that concert ticket... Last time in Hobart Tasmania & man did he still have the audience in the palm of his hand. The man & his music has had an incredible influence on my life & has left an indelible impression. Every chemotherapy treatment I endure the fuckin legend Sixto is with me ... making time almost stand still... when that day comes... when I'll finally slip away... I could think of nothing more comforting than listening to "Cold Fact " Thankyou 🙏 Thankyou 🙏Thankyou 🙏 From all my Five... Spirit, Heart, Soul, Body & Mind...

Fabulous Rodriguez... South Africans absolutely loved his album during the 80's. Bought the album. Covered some of his amazing songs at my gigs. What a brilliant artist. I can barely listen to the ra ra music that is out in the market these days. So many superb musical artists of great integrity like him never make it into the public arena. What a great loss. So happy 2 South African producers seized Rodrigues from total obscurity and produced a film about him. He is truely amazing. Authentic.

Wow after watching the Netflix documentary 1st as many I suspect ever hearing of this guy. I'm not into this kind of music I'm a head banger but I appreciate history of rock and roll and can hear talent this guy definitely had something. What an amazing story thank God he finally hit it big and made commercial success. Imo he was probably not marketed right. I watched this documentary on 12 December 2019 coincidentally he was playing 1 night only in my town on 13th but sold out. This man is as humble as any man ever. This man is in his 70s now he should be in rock and roll hall of fame. He's the Latin Bob Dylan. Thank God the world was made aware of this superstar.

Subjective of course, but I wonder if the fame that eluded Sixto for 40 years was fate- because his voice to my ears is sweeter and wiser now, and with that bittersweet humility that might have been impossible to achieve with the trappings of fame. Lets face it, he is where his richer peers of his age would love to be now in their careers- blowing the minds of fans young enough to be their great grandchildren. I never heard of Sixto until the film, and the 72 year old is making this middle-aged fan feeling like a teenager who has just discovered a new role model.

One of my favourite bits out of searching for sugar man was when the reporter asked him if he was resentful toward the record company for cheating him out of fame, he said well why would I be? And the man replied well they deprived you of a different life, probably a better one. And Rodriguez said well who said it would have been better? Perfectly sums up his attitude. I'm pretty sure he studied philosophy at university so he was no dummy when it came to life's problems.

Rodriguez is well loved in Australia too. I adored him back then and still do. I'm here because I used a phrase that reminded of a Rodriguez song and just had to listen and now it's three songs later! He's a big part of my life and his albums have always been played regularly in my house. He had huge hit songs in Oz and no good record collection was complete without Coming From Reality and Cold Fact. I guess we just didn't mind who his parents were :(

@@maddoman11 I love that he is still often in Australia. He's performed at Byron Bay Bluesfest many times. He knows where his success began and the love that Australians still have for him.

In the 1970's, his two albums were everywhere in Australia. A local promotor not only published his records here (under Licence), and brought him out to tour in 1979 and 1981, he also started selling his albums in South Africa in the 1970's. Sidenote: When Rodriguez toured in 1981, his backing band was a young Midnight Oil.
