Err using a thyristor, or better, a triac based controller suitable for universal motors (DO NOT USE A LIGHT DIMMER!) you CAN use an angle grinder and get the rpm down as low as 1800 rpm, maybe lower.

I don’t know if anyone else suggested this, but I suggest marking the wheels after use for what materials they were used on. You don’t want to polish your glasses after you have used the wheel to polish metal for instance. At our Makerspace the wheels have been ruined by using polish for steel, then polishing aluminum with the same wheel, different polish. Segregate your wheels.

@williamdouglas8040 Жыл бұрын
Great video. Direct, to the point, and well explained. You might want to try polishing with the "jeweller's rouge" (or red) polish after using the tripoli polish. The red polish does not cut like the tripoli polish - it is finer and should generate a great finish. So for those important applications (ie, not safety glasses) it might be worth the extra effort. But do note that it requires a dedicated buffing wheel.

There is a potential bright side though, pun intended. I’m too nearsighted to be a good candidate for LASIK correction, and replacing the eye lease by surgery is expensive. However, I will probably develop cataracts if I live long enough, and replacement lens surgery is covered by Medicare. Exposing my eyes to UV may get my vision corrected sooner! Wow, this is so different from the way most people would do boats or surfboards, which is to wet sand up to about 3000, then switch over to a liquid polishing compound like smoove to shine it up. These new polishing compounds have grit which will cut at low rpm, then break down and polish at high rpm, so it's like having two products in one.
@firstmkb Жыл бұрын
Here is the problem - I’m looking for an easy answer, which is the One Right Way. You have introduced uncertainty about this easy answer, and now I want to know about wet sanding boats - and study up. My time-saving response is to assume wet sanding is ONLY for aesthetics, therefore I can use a bench grinder to make my face shield usable again. I am an absolute sucker for going down deep research rabbit holes.
@christopherdickinson4291 Жыл бұрын
So it's more than just aesthetic, wet sanding boats anyways. You want the surface of the boat to be as smooth as possible to offer the least amount of water resistance. Wet sanding (if your blocking) will not only be faster than just straight polishing but also would leave you with a flatter surface to which you would polish out as your final step as far as the material work before getting into finishes and protectant compounds.

Commercial passenger jets have plastic windshields... I wonder what they use on them? Yeah, the modulus (stiffness) of the brush bristles or cloth fibers are another factor. I have two street brooms, really gnarly and stiff. They romp asphalt ...with authority! But are lousy for the smooth garage concrete. I have another type of brush for that. Its brush bristles are crushed at the end; which enhances effectiveness on tiny particles. One pass and every dirt spec is cleared. I've used it for 20 years. But if that broom is used on asphalt, it'll be ruined in ten seconds. I have three brushes for the cars: one for the dash, two for the exterior paint 1rst wash and second final wash). There's a few kinds of polishing compounds and buffing wheels specifically made for plastics, copper, brass, stainless steel, aluminum..... but i dig yir basic (uhh-huumm...uh little bit past basic) setup and the no frilly "got-it-done" style. Definitely will be digging into yir channel.
