Hey Moe, I was sitting here watching your video and being blown away by all the cool stuff you always have in your videos and then you mention my video on the glass cleaner and I was even more blown away. Thanks so much for the shout out I really appreciate it. I think I already got a couple of subscribers from your mention. I learned several things in your video but the coolest one was about the taillight and rubbing off the paint for the light to shine through. That was genius. By the way, if anyone ever needs a large amount of scrap or pretty decent used mirrors I have a tip. I live in a 55 and over retirement community of condos that has a trash day once a week. There are about 1000 apartments and I can't tell you how many times I have seen people throw out mirrors. If I wanted mirrors I would talk to some of the people who drive around and pick the trash to recycle every week and let them know I was in the market for some used mirrors. Nobody else wants them and they are going to be smashed. Thanks again Moe.

After 35 years in the glass business, I can tell you a couple things. Over all you did well, however, you sell the need for oil short. It doesn’t lubricate , but keeps the score from freezing and breaking wrong, especially on thicker glass. Kerosene actually works the best. Secondly, there is absolutely no need to tap your score after you make it. It doesn’t do a thing. Also, a good pattern cutter is essential. Now, about the mirror itself. Autos actually use a type of see through mirror where a percentage of light is absorbed. It becomes painfully obvious why at night when someone is behind you with the brights on. That’s also how turn signals are seen through the mirror. The electro coated mirrors ( with the silver backing) is not suitable for outdoor use, as demonstrated by the condition of the drivers side mirror. One last thing, auto glass shops, and even auto parts stores can order the right mirror at a decent price. Over all, however, you provided a good demonstration in glass cutting. Keep up the good work

I've had the benefit of having a friend who works at a glass company. They supply glass for widows to some major window manufacturers. Of course, he makes it look easy, easier than you made it look. He is keenly aware of the sharpness of his cutter. Really fresh cutters, good quality, means firm pressure but not having to lean into it. He's cut probably millions of lineal ft, some decorative, some as thick as 1/2". The sound of the cut will tell. Great idea doing DIY, I've got a couple of tall truck mirrors this will do nicely.

I love the idea about using cheap full length mirror for what ever project you need. I use mirrors for the printing surfaces of my 3-D printers. I always bought the 12 x 12 mirrors and cut them down. Awesome

I will say the larger mirror has a hot glue on frame. It breaks right off and then a cardboard back is glued in a few spots around the edges. It also comes off easily but sometimes some small dalops of glue need to be peeled off the back of the mirror around the edges.

The mirrors on my work van were the melted plastic kind. I went into a CVS, bought a hand mirror and took a soldering iron, and welded it to the frame the mirror was in. Stayed that way for 7 years..until some wiseass decided to smash it while I was parked. 7 years of bad luck for them.

In regards to sanding the glass. You can actually take off a fair amount of material with a sander. At uni in the glass workshop we had a linishing machine which was basically a large belt sander. I would recommend decent mask when sanding glass tho, silicosis is no joke. You can wet sand too, we did that a lot to clean up edges of cut glass and to smooth them out so they are safer.

Reminds me of when I used to work in a double glazing factory. We had the big sheets and an air table to help. Crazy time. No OSHA then or rather there ( Ireland ) you had to be safe. Still lots of cuts. lol. edit. Living in a ghetto city this is the land of busted side-views especially if you can't turn them in. Le sigh.

The underwater technique with tin snips leaves a very rough edge. Fine for something that has a gasket/edge but not generally for a mirror with exposed edges.

I was sorting tyres on a haulage lorry this morning, for a company, and the mechanic was fitting a brand new mirror, and he said it was the second time the same lorry had it’s mirror replaced within the span of a week. He was replacing the whole carcass , which seems rather wasteful, and expensive. 👍

I've taken stained glass classes both for lead came style and the Tiffany Style and I can tell you pushing is the hardest thing. You do need to push hard but where you run into trouble is starting and finishing the cut. It takes some practice to push hard and not crunch down at the end sometimes even ruining the piece. He also did not mention glazier's pliers.

Pushing and listening for the correct sound is key. If you're on a perfectly flat surface you can push almost as hard as you want with no issues.

Practice on a scrap piece of glass. It’s not about how hard you press, but the consistency of the sound scoring makes. As long as you hear it all the way through, it’s good enough. Pressing too hard can actually cause the score to freeze, which in turn, causes the glass to break wrong. Oil when scoring is essential.

The passenger mirrors on most modern cars with tiny mirrors are convex/slightly curved to give a slightly wider field of view. The drivers is flat. I've done passenger mirrors and the difference is so small you'd only notice it in a side by side comparison.

Most mirrors have an actual gray paint over the silver. So it won't just wash off.

FYI You can cut glass with a tin snip underwater..circles no problem.

True. Water isn't necessary though as it just keeps the dust/chips from moving. It leaves a very rough cut and can chip the reflective coating off the back in noticable chunks.

I recently replaced a section of glass in a large picture frame for my daughter. It cost me forty bucks for a 2' x 3' chunk of 1/8" glass. Seemed a biut pricey to me. Anyone know a good source for glass like this? With Moe's tutorial, I feel confident I could make the size I need out of a larger piece.

Go to your local goodwill. They usually have tons of picture frames of that size for next to no money. Buy it and just use the glass.

I've picked up several broken larger mirrors (4ft-6ft) for free where just a corner was broken and cut them down. Though when you get this large 1/4" thick is more common.
