Hi there , I'm not sure what your name is so forgive me for not mentioning your name. This is the first video I have seen from your channel and I wanted to convey my most sincere thanks to you for posting this video. I noticed my freezer had partially unthawed 3/4 of my food this morning and that the fan didn't quite sound right and not much longer after I noticed that the fan quit all together. At the time I noticed this I didn't have time to look into the problem despite the several hundred dollars of food I had in there. At the time I was facing the installation of 2 cam positioning sensor on my truck. Anyhow after watching about 3/4 of this video I was able to go into the freezer take it apart and quickly find and fix the problem at no cost other than the things that I threw out food wise. Originally I didn't have a clue and thanks to this video you saved me a costly repair bill and or having to buy a new freezer. Neutral and ground used to be tied directly together in 75. I don't think it was until the late 80's that Neutral was separated from ground until after the circuit breakers.

At least in Ireland and Europe, things were made better. The algorithm recommended this, and I feel like appliances made in America just break down after a few years. Modern European appliances, or US appliances made before the 2000s had long lifespans. Our Kitchen Aid fridge had some issues in 2020, and it was 1.5 years old. Defrosting system had to be repaired.

I had the exact same problem with my freezer. Replaced the thermostat and it works fine. Of course a Sears repairman told me what the problem was. He told me what to order and how to install it. He saved me several hundred dollars vs him repairing it himself. It's hard to find servicemen like that.

One tip (not originally mine) is to use a standard ATO automotive fuse instead of that little strip of copper. You can work it live and has a built in overload. Old guy taught me this and it has been a game changer for me in diagnosing things. Just like you did with the strip of copper, I could essentially take out all possible components from the circuit until I found the bad part. Thanks for all the great vids!

@@AtimatikArmy In the video Moe's took the blue wire and the black wire off of the thermostat. The connections they were on are flat blades. The copper piece he inserted was basically 2 flat blades in one piece. Instead of using the copper piece you take a car fuse and attach the blue wire and black wire to the 2 flat blades of the car fuse. We do this in HVAC also. The use of terminal connections for electrical connections is used in tons of applications so the tip that the poster above gave of using a car fuse is a good one. A benefit is that if you use a low amp fuse it will usually burn the fuse before you do damage if there's a short somewhere that's causing the problem.

These Frigidaire freezers are notorious for thermostat failure. I had already guessed it when I first seen it lol.. but very good video. When I diagnose these first thing I check is thermostat. You can also check the thermostat for continuity when it’s in the on position

Nice job. Here quite many have converted top loading freezers into normal high efficiency fridges. They just replace the thermostat for something way warmer values. Good for cabins with few low power solar panels to keep milk and such from spoiling.

Thanks for the tips. I have an older shop refrigerator that is "frost free" but it freezes up every year or two, and water collects in the bottom of it. When I manually defrost it, it works perfectly. Now I have some idea how to check it out electrically, and, as a bonus, I finally 😊get a chance to put my Kill-a-Watt meter to diagnostic use.

Great overview of everything. Makes sense. A friend has basically the identical "Sears" upright freezer, so that was a plus. I pulled off the sheet metal in the freezer compartment yesterday, and it is the exact same unit. By the way, I tried to jumper / short the thermostat yesterday, and that didn't work, but I was using old needle nose pliers to jump it, so I may not have had a good connection. Going back with my electrical tools today. I was on a plumbing job yesterday.

My advise is check the timer first if you have a cooling problem ... this is free , no volt meters necessary and the timer is responsible for 75% of failing fridges and freezers . Timer motors are always turning like a clock . When the freezer is defrosting you can usually hear a clock like ticking sound . Many times I have found that the timer was stuck at the place in the cycle where it has to push a spring loaded lever to start the defrost cycle . If there was a power outage the timer will stop . If it stopped while pushing against the defrost lever inside then it might not have enough strength or momentum to start turning again . While plugged in ... turn the plastic screw/ knobs so you can hear the timer turning . You should hear the click when it gets into the defrost cycle . If you go past it , go around again and stop when you hear the click ! If nothing else is broken the timer will turn off the compressor and turn on the defrost heater tube to melt the ice . It could take 1 hour if the ice is packed . Note : the extra ice melting might overfill the tray in the bottom of freezer/fridge and wet the floor . The tray is made to catch normal amounts of water and slowly let it evaporate near the heat of the compressor . When all of the ice has melted the temperature of the evaporator will begin to get hot and a sensor will click on , sending power to the timer , the timer will make ticking noise for a while and then turn the compressor on. If that happens your freezer should feel cold in minutes . Check it once or twice for the next few days to make sure everything is cold enough . If ice starts to build up again or the freezer gets warmer in 4 or 5 days then your timer is probably going to need replacing because it isn't turning through its cycle properly . The motor in the timer might be failing. Note if that did not fix it check thermostat , (timer,) defrost thermostat sensor , defrost heater element and finally compressor . Note : you cannot change your own compressor . It has pressurized freon gas in it that must be captured by pumps and tanks for recycle . Only done by authorized repair persons. It could be costly . Get estimate .

I have a non frost free 9 cubic footer I bought around 1993 and it's still going strong. Like the jumper idea on bypassing the thermostat to rule it out. I put a new cap and starter in my Kenmore fridge and it was still short cycling and popping. Finally accessed the thermostat just to look up the part number. When I reinstalled it the fridge started working fine. I think it was just corrosion or the spade connector was loose.

Absolutely Excellent!! I have the exact same freezer with exactly the same problem.. I've changed the defrost timer..and suspect the thermostat... so think I'll get the tester out..and run through your diagnosis ...but pretty sure the thermostat is the problem. I can get it to run by using a blowdryer on hot setting directed at the thermostat, it will come on and run for a day or so...but then shutt off and not start up again. Thanks for your video... helped me big time.... to understand how it works!!!

New years was I think 18* by the time I get off work its to dark to record. My son is chomping at the bit to get his gas tank sending unit and fuel lines replaced on his 61 C10. My oldest got his first car 2000 Silverado and he needed help with that.....and just got my wife's 66 mustang back on the road

This is really appreciated and helps sort out the electrical portions of many refrigerators. I have a 1952 Westinghouse fridge, one of the very first frost-free models they ever made. Instead of a 24 hour run time, it has a heater that kicks on after a switch in the door jamb has been opened and closed a set amount of times. On mine both the switch and the thermostat are faulty. If I plug in the fridge it runs indefinitely and turns into an unregulated freezer, getting down to -19°F! I gotta see if I can find a new thermostat for it and hopefully rebuild the count switch. Anybody familiar with these old Westinghouse Fridges, share with me what you know, I'd appreciate it.

I've worked on a fair amount of vintage refrigeration. Mainly Coke Machines but also as old as a 1941 Kelvinator. The thermostat should have a temp rating on it. If not you can also just pick one based on whether is monitors the temp off the fridge part or the freezer part.

For decades I was the destination house with a custom full size sleigh pulled by 9 full size motion reindeer and a 20ft tree off the top of my house, and lights everywhere. However, people want to see animated lights and I should really look into what you did. I have a super basic 6 channel light to music system that flashes each channel but it's getting boring.

@Mike Spain Remember those limit switches go out, too. My cousin had one that went permanently closed and her frozen meat had rings of green rot in it because the limit switch would not stop the heating/dethawing process. So the meat went from frozen to overheated every dethaw cycle.

Great video. A no-contact voltage tester can do a lot of the testing without disconnecting wires. It's a cheap investment. Harbor Freight has them for $5.

the defrost element didn't come on in the video, the defrost thermostat was still open due to temp, what you saw was full locked wattage from the compressor before the overload kicked in. give er a while and check the heater again when it's down to temp, great video though and very thorough! reminds me of a video that saved me when my roper fridge was freezing it's condensate drain and the fix was to wrap 12ga copper wire around the element and feed an end down the tube to warm it up and two other pieces on either side to melt the drain pan.

I've had to replace the evaporator temperature sensor twice on my almost 25 year old "worldpool" fridge, but it's still going. Last fix was cleaning out the drip pan drain tube. That was probably the first time I'd ever done it. And a while back I bought some brushes for cleaning out the condenser coil underneath it. Had quite a but of dog hair and dust! Thanks for this video so if my fridge goes out again and it's not the sensor I'll how how to check other things! And for what it's worth, In my non-frost free chest freezer I think the coils are all around the walls as that's where all the frost forms.

Yeah, I use it for diagnosing all the time. I also use it to set gas generators to proper HZ.

The Most common problem on freezers is the fan is not working. This will also make the evaporator ice up. OR the door was cracked open and made the freezer ice up. But yea the heater could be a problem too. They are very simple to fix. Thanks MOE for making a video for people. this will prevent more landfill freezers.

Evaporator fans are NOT the most common issue freezers have. Evaporator fans die because of defrost issues cause them to be encased in ice. Defrost issues are VERY common. 🙄

Nice fix. Got to love the easy ones. I've started avoiding picking up broken fridges/freezers because the past couple I got had bad compressors and I don't have the means to evacuate and recharge.

They can be a pain to dispose of. But remember all the scrapper guys aren't collecting the refrigerant. Can't really blame them as it is such a pain. Also a small trivial fact is computer air duster is just refrigerant. I have old cans computer duster "cans of air" of r12 freon, r134a and r152a. So that is just dumping refrigerant straight into the atmosphere.

@Dustin: You could probably make one out of one of those old compressors. It'd help if you could braze copper but you can also get fittings with the "olive" that fit and only need wrenches to work with. I'd search YT, I'll bet some one has done it already. I am head of maintenance in many hotels in my area, in the summer when it’s super hot out the ac does “too well of a job” if that makes sense lol and my boss always gets worried about spending lots of money on hvac. One night it stopped working, hot muggy night and people in the lobby were complaining. He called me in and said see what I can do 🤷🏻 I shut it all down and went home for 3 hours. All the system needed was to defrost itself, boss couldn’t believe it lol
