This video tells a story of a Greek hero Odysseus, who, with his crew, faced one-eyed man-eating cyclops and his father, brother of Zeus and god of the sea, Poseidon.
During the Trojan War, Poseidon favored Trojans and wanted them to win the war, but the greek hero Odysseus turned the tide and Greeks won the war. This made Poseidon very angry, so he worked hard to make Odysseus’ journey home very hard.
One of the storms that Poseidon caused, shipwrecked Odysseus and his crew on the island where Poseidon’s son, Polyphemus, lived.
Polyphemus was a member of the Cyclopes, a race of giants that live on an island near Sicily.
While searching for food and shelter, Odysseus and his men stumbled upon a cave full of cheese, milk, lambs and other food. After seeing all these giant things, the crew recognized that it’s a house of a Cyclopes, and they begged Odysseus to just take food and escape, but Odysseus ordered them to wait for the owner.
When Polyphemus returned home with his giant sheep, he saw the humans slaughtering his lambs and eating them.
Polyphemus shouted with a voice like thunder ‘Who are you?'
Odysseus than said: 'We are Greeks, blown off course on our way home from Troy. We assume you'll extend hospitality or suffer the wrath of Zeus, protector of guests.'
'Zeus? We Cyclopes are stronger than Zeus. I'll show you hospitality.'
With that, he snatched up two of the men and ate them alive. They could hear their bones cracking. Odysseus and the crew cried aloud to Zeus, but Zeus did nothing.
When Polyphemus fell asleep, Odysseus tried to kill him with a knife, but his skin was so thick, also the exit is blocked with a big rock that the crew couldn’t move a millimeter.
After Polyphemus woke up, he ate 2 more men, after which he left. They found a tree trunk and made a spear out of it.
When the Cyclops came home and prepared his usual meal, Odysseus said to him: 'Cyclops, take this wine as a gift. But be careful, it is so strong that we usually dilute it in water twenty to one.’
The Cyclops tossed it back and then demanded more. 'I like you, Greek,' he said. ‘What's your name?'
'My name is No-man,' Odysseus told him. But when the wine had knocked him out, the crew puts their plan into effect.
They quietly approached the Cyclops with a glowing red, hot spear and shoved it deep into his eye. The spear cut through the eye like a hot knife through the butter, while the Odysseus kept pushing it and twisting it so it went deeper and deeper.
Polyphemus screamed like a little child. Neighboring Cyclopes heard his screams of frustration and rage and rushed to the cave.
'What is it, brother?' they called inside. 'Is someone harming you?'
'No-man is harming me!' shouted Polyphemus.
The Cyclopes thought Polyphemus was sick and left.
In the morning, when the Cyclops was letting his sheep out, the crew hid under the sheep and sneaked out.
When they got far away on the sea, Odysseus could not resist and yelled: “If someone asks who did this, the name is Odysseus!”
Hearing his real name, Polyphemus prayed to Poseidon to kill Odysseus on the sea, or if he can’t to that, then to make sure he return home with all of his men dead and his ships sunk.
Poseidon heard the prayers and sent many storms Odysseus’ way, which made him often go off course, where he met many monsters like Scylla [sil'la] or Sirens. Poseidon also didn’t allow any of the gods to help Odysseus and would punish those who didn’t listen.
This is one of many great stories about a Greek hero Odysseus and his 10 year-long voyage. His recklessness made his return much harder than he wanted it to be. And really, just because he couldn't resist the victory taunt, 10 years later he returned to Ithaca with all of his men dead and his ships sunk.
