Omg the Goodwill is the BEST place to get cheap steampunk outfits. I was just there today and I found a whole bunch of frilly lace up blouses, beautiful coats in velvets and leathers, cool boots...i actually had to really think about what I need to leave behind lol because there was so much I could have bought that would look great.

That red blouse and brown jacket screams Jules Verne, just do it. The skirt (?).

Good input, some times sourcing materials and cloths can be daunting. Thanks for the advice!

I actually found this depressing. I have been trying to put together my first Steampunk outfit (both for me & my husband) for over a year now, WITHOUT resorting to buying $250 skirts & jackets from themed online stores. Every time I go into a Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift store, I NEVER find anything even CLOSE to the amazing items you all found. I have watched many other videos as well, where people do the same thing...go into thrift stores & cone out with AMAZING finds! I spent 6 months alone, just trying to buy a blouse/shirt, that was even SLIGHTLY steampunk-esque, pirate like....NOTHING! I also looked for broken & costume jewelry to break down to make other items, like necklaces & as add on’s to other things, & had no luck there either. The only thing I found was a few belts. I ended up buying a VERY basic top from Old Navy, (a cream colored off the shoulder top with no sleeves) & a few jewelry making things & a few cogs & gears from Amazon. Also was forced into buying a Bustle skirt from a shop, at $120! I’m STILL looking for things from thrift stores, yard sales & such, but I honestly have virtually ZERO luck. I have made a few small items, (a necklace & earrings from the jewelry supplies & 2 guns with dollar store sponge dart guns, craft supplies & some hardware odds & ends) but just cannot find items I need in thrift & second hand stores! I even tried traveling to larger cities to check their thrift stores, & NOTHING. Like I said, watching these videos depresses the hell outta me. I’m super happy seeing others get cool stuff, (I actually get almost as excited as if it were mine & it gives me temporary hope sometimes) but then I end up super depressed again. ***sigh*** I have to add though, that I did like your video a lot. It yet again gives me a bit of hope that I might find something as cool as you all did.

I feel your pain. We all got lucky that day. Sometimes I will peruse on 8 visits and leave empty handed. Look up Dresslikeapirate.com, bustles and swallowtail skirts can be had for $40, also belly dance skirts on Amazon, many clothing articles will transfer genres. Purchase a sewing machine and watch tutorials, you can make a skirt for less than $30 in most cases, custom to your liking. The rest is creativity. You might not find something perfect but you can usually find a good foundation to add frills and nick knacks to. Keep us posted, we would love to see how your kit is shaping up and take friends with you. Steam punk is a social sport. Keep your chin up lass.

fishhead1227 Thanks for your reply. I understand it sometimes takes multiple trips to find something, but it’s been about a year and a half now, & probably 40-50 trips to multiple thrift stores, & I’ve literally found nothing even close to useable. I never thought I’d find the perfect stuff, but I can’t even find items to modify! I’ve been a crafter about 30+ years now, so adding/modifying is right up my alley. And I own a sewing machine, but have severe arthritis in my hands, fingers & collarbone, so I only use that for small jobs now. Looking more for things that I can add to or modify. I live in a pretty small town, so I have to travel to conventions or groups. But I appreciate the encouragement! 👍🏻 I’m not giving up by any means. I love the esthetics of Steampunk too much. And thanks for the link...I’ll check them out.

Thanks for the advice on this. trying to get my halloween costume for cheap so I don't end up having to go to the Spirit store and paying like $50 on something. Already got the top hat and the goggles so just need the rest of the stuff.
