exactly. some idiots thought it was for east pakistan separation 1971 lol. though it was composed in 1962 for film so definitely it might be written in 1950's precisely might be during his jail period.

Contrary to the common belief, this poem is about the breakup of Pakistan in 1971. Faiz portrays united Pakistan as his "mehboob" in this song. Faiz Ahmed Faiz was imprisoned during the era of one of the military dictators and was banished for his progressive views. Consequent upon his return to Pakistan from Dhaka (when East Pakistan became became Bangladesh), he penned down this masterpiece. The part of the song (khaak mein lithray huay, khoon mein nahlaaey huay) refers to that part.
