Your reviews always crack me up! In all the good ways. I love your argumentation, writing and humor. It never fails to be informative and right up my alley when it comes to the (obviously good) taste in games. Keep up the stellar work. Liked, sub'ed (for a while) and spreading the word!

Happy to see this review, even though you didn't love it I could tell I'm going to enjoy it and that's a sign of a good review. A bit of a nitpick Side note; that quora answer, imo, is mostly basic on superficial tropes of cosmic horror. The best post Lovecraft mythos stories have VERY human centric stories. John Langan's The Fisherman and Ramsey Campbell's The Tugging are good examples. And the "don't let the humans win" idea is vastly overstated. It doesn't even hold up to some of Lovecraft's best known works like Dunwich Horror and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.

Dang you for not loving a game I love! Also dang you for making fair points and criticisms about it! 😜 But in all seriousness, great video as always, I still had a blast with this game, so I am glad I played it before I saw this video lol. But, I am also starved for Lovecraftian games. I should try Moonring after I finish BG3.
@YeOldEntertainment6 ай бұрын
Well yes. I can see how someone starved for Lovecraftian games would have a much more positive view of this game. But it's not like I sh*at on the game. 7 out 10 is still good in my scale. But to me there's no way it's more than that.
@LinuxGamingChronicles6 ай бұрын
@@YeOldEntertainment Nah, I was completely playing around and just poking fun at people who get offended that their game doesn't score a 10 lol. 7 is a fair score for a objective review. Without the Lovecraftian element I probably would have scored it around a 6 especially since I played it on patch one when the version was still showing"pre-release" and the final fight was WAY too easy, I mean it was a joke how easy it was (he patched it after I finished the game) I played on normal difficulty, not hard like yourself.

Well. 7.99, 30 hours of entertainment in which you are likely never going to be bored... I think it's worth a purchase. Don't expect this to turn your RPG world on its ear, though.

Well Baldur's Gate, Icewin Dale and Bard's Tale are available for Android. If you have already played those, I wouldn't know.

I played this game on release and I had a bit better impression of it. Most problems like lack of meaningful choices does not bother me because I'm fine with linear stories as long as I'm only going to play it once. The Fetch Quests were mostly just reasons for the player character to visit a special area and see the story play out there. Wile it is inspired by D&D it is also based on the old Might and Magic games. At least the magic system seem to be. A lot of the classes seem to be quite unique also, with the fire mage being a melee specialist that buff himself and others with fire magic. Finally, I liked the low and gritty fantasy meets Lovecraft esthetics. Yea, the fact that the main solution to eldritch horrors seem to be to just kill them... Well, thats RPGs and D&D in particular for ya. I thought the writing was good for what it was. The scenario is believable, a stranded hero on a mission to save the girl are stuck on an accursed island and discover that the only way out is through. After finding the girl she and him decides after their successes that whatever this is is bigger than them both and that they have been successful at fighting it so far. The plan is not to kill the big bad though. It is to stop whatever ritual is summoning him before he arrives. I have never played moonring however so I dont know what you are comparing it to.
@chuckwood34265 ай бұрын
Some comments on the UI. It is possible to start combat stealthed. You do this by entering stealth and starting the battle manually before the enemy have seen you. Doing so will give you a free round in combat which is very powerful. But I dont know if the game teaches you this.
@YeOldEntertainment5 ай бұрын
@@chuckwood3426 Well. A couple of observations here. I didn't say the plan was to "kill the bad guy". It is to stop the ritual, but as player you are lead to believe that that is going to entail some sort of epic fight against the evil that's behind it. And second, no the game doesn't tell you how to start a fight stealthed. The way I see it, it should've been by allowing you do use your combat skills before the fight and then presenting you with the position interface. To me me, the fact that this isn't how it works, makes it a bit obscure. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not great and didn't do anything too different from stuff that we have already seen. I think Moonring is much better experience as far as old game-inspired RPGs go.
@Lulasz6 ай бұрын

I finished the game in about 30 hours and can't safely recommend it if you're a spoiled CRPG fan like miyself who will complain when a game doesn't give you enough roleplay choices or interactions with the world. Too much stuff is missing in the base release. Some of which can be fixed, like class/spell balance or UI or lack of content in second half of the game. But what's the point of the "factions" tab in the journal? Currently there's no such mechanic in the game and I'm not sure the dev can add it at this point, it would have to be tightly integrated with the plot and game world for it to actually make sense. Also I don't get why do we need these first person dungeon crawler sections where you can't properly interact with anything and can only move in four directions. Not sure it can be helped unless the dev makes a whole new campaign. Also I noticed that many skill checks don't lead to anything meaningful and only give you false choices that don't even give xp or meager reward. And the writing is not that great, it's just OK, isn't rewarding enough in and of itself. All in all, not a big fan of this game, it's not bad per se and is very playable but I wouldn't recommend it blindly to anyone, you can get disappointed just like myself.
