The Skaldic Bard

Күн бұрын

By popular demand, here is my translation, arrangement and performance of the Palästinalied in the Gothic language. I was a little hesitant to make this one as it doesn’t really make sense historically (Gothic was extinct by the time of the crusades), but… it’s such a wonderful language and it was really fun, albeit exhausting, to translate and make. Also, who doesn’t want more versions of Palästinalied?
It was quite laborious to translate, and I wasn’t able to preserve the original meaning of every line while keeping the rhyming signature, but I am quite happy with my solutions. Some of the rhymes in the Gothic had to be half-rhymes to strike a balance between meaning and structure.
I am using quite a conservative pronunciation of Gothic which preserves a lot of the original diphthongs which merged together at a later date.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Please subscribe, like the video and leave a comment if you did as it helps me out a lot.
Many thanks for your kindness, as always.

Bless your work, specially the translation required to make such an extensive song possible. Despite the ahistorical setting, I like the fact that this shows both how archaic Gothic was, compared to any Germanic languages it was with or that came after, and the moments where words in modern german or english can be found, but with a different meaning, illustrating that difference. ¡Cheers!

When will stop to amaze me by the span of your knowledge in languages!!! More than impressed here!! Its not long since I am following you, but I am nothing but an avid fan of yours. Being an Indian Christian, I am proud of both the oldest civilization of Vedic ages as well as my own religion. So, here is a small request- can you translate Palastinalied in Sanskrit or may be at least in Hindi? I can not stop imagining how wonderful that would sound. I do not know if you were ever exposed to Sanskrit/Hindi, but definitely you can collaborate with someone.

Skald! been feeling awfully under the weather this past week, had paracetamol but who knew another version of this wonderful song was the best medicine of all I speak about as much Gothic as i speak Xhosa or Cherokee so i can't comment on how much meaning was lost in the lyrics, but from my readings and hearing you sing i would say that you managed to keep the song relatively pure. However, this is the problem with song translations keeping meaning and rhyming. but this was excellent as always Lovely vocals too, you never cease to amaze me with how wide your vocal range is. in "The Swedish Crusaders" your tone and style of voice are completely different to say, "God beþ mid us" not much to say, i'm still struggling. sorry God Bless

And the job you do of making songs from these ancient languages is amazing, you brought back these cultures and peoples through music. i've always wanted to learn some ancient languages, but i've never knew how could I've done it, one of them is latin, since i'm catholic, i feel it's important for me to learn it, and it sounds beautiful.

The Goths, famously subscribing to Arianism, would never sing of God coming to Earth as a man! 😂 Aside from that, this is pretty good. The syllable stress is a little inconsistent (e.g. reikjō being improperly stressed on the ultima), as in some of your other old Germanic works, but that's a fairly minor technical issue.

@@neo-astetsk5842 True, but the Visigoths were not the only speakers of Gothic: the Gepids, for example, are recorded as a distinct people as late as 630 (some 40 years after Gothic lost its status as a liturgical language in Spain), and they may have survived into the 8th century (when Gothic is supposed to have died out completely among the Visigoths), but I digress. The line just made me chuckle in light of nontrinitarianism being one of the Goths' defining characteristics as a people.
