It's just an aesthetic, a style thing. I've been doing it for years since I was a little kid. I probably first noticed it in an old 411 skate video where a pro set them up like that and thought it was cool. So, I did it too after that. One other reason that I could think of is that it's possible that a sponsored rider would hide the logo of another company as best as one could in order to prevent the logo from being visible in a video or a photo in a magazine, so that person won't lose the sponsorship? There could be plenty of reasons, but I think the common one is just style; how it looks.
