Skatefresh instructor Asha gives Portsmouth skater Ellie a quick Laser coaching session on her Powerslide stop. You'll get the learning steps to start practicing this awesome stop for yourself and keep watching till the end to see Ellie master the stop and then turn up the sped and confidence x10!
An awesome result in a very short time.
Don't be discouraged if your Powerslide takes you weeks longer than Ellie's did. She's a very strong intermediate level skater. But follow those steps and you'll be on your way.

@@Snifffski If you meant to learn it backwards, it's called "fakie" in skating, "switch" in skiing. If you meant to say right vs. left, you wouldn't use "switch," you'd simply say "I need to learn it on my other/non-dominant side," or you'd' use it as a verb, "I need to switch to the other side," as there's no label that's been created for alternating left vs. right in either sport (although I have heard your "bad" side as you "goofy" side). Happy skating!

I've seen a lot of people try to teach this, but they don't break it down this well. I think I have good enough of an idea what to do now so I'm going to try it! I feel way more comfortable knowing I'm not going to be putting to much weight on that back knee.😃

Asha thank you so much for this tutorial. I think it was a great idea to use a student to show every step that lead to a not so good powerslide to a good one, making us know what is the right way to do things but also explaining what are the common mistakes that we do. Usually when I look for a skate trick tutorial I use to watch a lot of them treating the same argument and then I chose what is the best explaination to follow. Obviously I found that yours is the best as many other tutorial you made. But here comes the funny part. Today (sunday in Rome, Italy) I was at home with my wife and she had to work so she said to me : "If you feel bored why don't you go down skating in the garage?". So I tought maybe it's not a bad idea : there are two Asha's tutorial that I wanna try, the powerslide and the right way to do a transition from forward to backward using scissor position. It makes no sense going on watching ten times the same tutorial if then you don't go to try. So I went down to the garage and magically following what you said I was able to do a decent (maybe only about 5 inches of slide) powerslide in less than 5 minutes and i also made my transition smoother. I was really happy I did it. Thank you so much, you're really precious. ALESSANDRO

Reading this comment makes me sooo happy thank you. A good teacher is nothing unless someone is willing to trust the method and give it a try, focussing hard and really following the instructions. This is where I see learning skating becoming a personal development project not just a sport or hobbie. The joy you felt in sliding was hopefully a highlight of your day! You did a Powerslide after 5 mins!!!! Now it’s a 12 month project to getting your PS up to your medium speeds. Then it becomes the most efficient effective and impressive ways to stop (I use it 95% of the time”. You are on that road! Well done. Keep it up. And thanks to your wife for nudging you there 😉

Yeah, that angle seen her bend the knee deeper and how that changed so drastically the angle of the power sliding skate super cool to see that.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 10 ай бұрын
I always say "there's knee bend and there's knee bend" by which I mean the knee bend we usually want is where the knee cap moves forwards to cover the toes (or in the case of the Powerslide to cover the space in front of the skate. But yes, how the sliding angle is affected is super important. Every part of our bodies affects and influences other parts and that's my super-power....seeing these connections and communicating them.

That looks so awesome!!!! I've just started skating (Less than a week ago) so I'm still struggling a lot with just standing on rollerblades and doing basic stretches/walking on the spot etc. It takes sooooo much more muscle than I could have ever expected. So far I've managed to travel around 30m down my street before I lost control and fell. The next step is learning how to stop ;) I get so pumped and motivated to practice or just go out and work on my balance or muscle development every time I see the amazing things people do on wheels and I really can't wait to impress everyone around my area with my epic power slides! Interestingly, where I am, most people I know who skate are women so I'm hoping one I get better I can drag my brothers or housemates (who are men) into skating with me.

Hello Asha, I've been trying hard to do Power Stops, and has fell backwards few times... punching hard the elbows on ground (of course... w/o elbow protection... to note that falls). Soo... I'm saw this video and my world of wheels came up side down... in good ways, on this time! I'm just followed those easy steps, with the important adend of the pression of both hands on base's knee... and the magics just happened!!! I'm very glad of your amazing tutorial!!! Very thanks for that, and Greetings from Brazil (Belo Horizonte/Minas Gerais)

Yes backwards scissors takes time to develop but it's worth it as all fluency backwards comes form the backward scissors for ue. Try just 1/2 scissor positions first and just learn the steering in that position first. Then move to 3/4 scissors and finally full scissors. Hope that helps.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hola. Soy Sergio del Team Skatefresh. Asha agradece tus palabras.

You can do it! The soul slide is a greats top if you have the internal hip rotation.

Just still learning this myself, but switching for the other leg to brake after turning around seems much more complicated and dangerous when you need a powerfull stop when going a bit faster. I'll try it anyway slowly to get the feeling and agility.

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. It's just a different approach and depends on the skater. Asha and I we don't do the whole turn either; in fact, we usually jump if we are going at very high speed. It's always better to keep an eye towards the direction of travel, especially going fast. This approach however it's easier to get the feeling, as you said. Great you're practicing! Keep on it and you will get more and more comfortable every time. That will allow you to increase the speed bit by bit.

Great teacher!! I can do it in not very high speed. But I would like to know how to do the transition in high speed, when I go downhill and I want to stop. Thanks in advance

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. It's just a matter of practice increasing the speed bit by bit. You can also try to do a hop or a lunge entry instead. Even though it sounds dangerous to hop at high speed, if you do it right it's actually safer than having one of the skates touching the ground (like in the mohawk transition explained here). To understand the hop you can watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4OmhYKFlreNeZo and if you want to do it using the lunge entry (which is the one Asha uses all the time) watch this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIDKp3eBraaboNE On a slope the lunge entry will be safer than the hop. In all cases, before doing it downhill you must be able to do it on a flat surface first. It should really feel like second nature before taking a slope.

Hi Asha ! I bought your online course on the powerslide. There you teach this transition into powerslide, and I would like to ask you if you would use this Mohawk transition into powerslide at high speed (in a case where transition corresponds to the right one to have the sliding foot ready), if instead jumping is better and if all the exercises you propose in the course are usable for a jump transition too...in the Mohawk transition you always keep your feet on the ground while you usually suggest not too at higher speed... Let me know!

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. In the mohawk into powerslide the feet are not kept on the ground the whole time. You are supposed to lift one foot to get into the side surf (AKA eagle) position for some milliseconds and then lift the foot that will slide. This entry to powerslide is safe at high speed, however the hop is safer. The difference is that with the hop you need to be perfectly aligned, with the right weight distribution, and with the right angle on the sliding foot, when you land. It's like one move only and in the air. Many people find it tricky because of all the factors have to be perfect together, but it's not really rocket science. The hop is actually a natural step further once you get the mohawk entry; so yes, you can use the exercises to learn the mohawk entry and then add the hop. Those who have a problem with the side surf position may prefer the hop instead and go to it directly. Asha uses all the entries but mostly the lunge.

That's awesome!!! Well done you! Next you'll need to work at getting it combined with the transition from forwards so it becomes your go-to stop from high speeds. otherwise it's just limited to backward stopping. Check out the Powerslide 4 ways training here; skatefresh.com/stops-slides/
