I got a great tip for beginners! Ive started properly skating 12 hours ago,, and try to get my ollie technique good first, i was told to pop, jump, and slide all at the same time, been practicing this for 12 hours and havent had much improvement so i decided to break it down slightly. what i did was focused on the pop and the jump and left out the slide, i popped hard and jump high and to my great surprise did my biggest ollie ever without any (minimal) slide , anybody else having trouble try this first , get your pop and jump reall good then start adding in the slide to add even more height and to balance the board EDIT: another good tip is bring your knees up to your chest, cos the board wont your lift feet, you have to lift the board, i was jumping as high as a I could but i wasnt bending my knees,you upper body doesnt go much higher when bring up our knees so that why we forget to do it, when you first start making sure you bring up knees it might feel unnatural , that just means right ,, hope i can help somebody

my foot wont slide i pop jump and bend my ankle i try to slide it but it doesnt work !is it my griptape my shoes or my ankles ?
@8lorko810 жыл бұрын
same thing was happening to me, i discovered it was because i wasnt bringin my knees up after i jump, the board wont allow you to slide you foot if you full weight is stopping it,, itll feel weird at first but when jump bring you knees up as high as possible, i was worried that i couldnt physically jump high enough to ollie any higher but it turned out that this was my problem,,my legs stayed fairly straight when i jumped If you practice popping and jumping, high and tucking in knees, first and leave the sliding till later youll get the hang of it much faster,remember the slide is the least important part of the ollie . one last bit of advice is that the the pop ,jump and slide are not meant to be done all at the same time, bends your knees a little then jump , then before your feet leave the board, pop and bring your knees up, then when the board reaches its max height slide your foot forward, it should feel fluid and weightless.

@underthepie531510 жыл бұрын
Fahd Lachhab Hey Fahd, if your board is turning it can mean a few things: - Your shoulders, which are the most important things when it comes to frontside and backside 180, are probably the reason you're turning. Try to keep them parallel to the board itself, don't rotate them. - Your feet might not be centered on the tail, or behind the bolts. Make sure your toes are completely centered on the board. If not, ask any skater, these were just from my experience, i had the same problem. Good Luck :D

The way I have come to learn them, is to pop hard and jump at the same time so you lose contact with board under your back foot and the board is trying to become vertical and then use the front foot to balance. They key is when you to do it hard to jump so that you lose contact with it, as seen in the video. Just my two cents

You have to get really good at jumping, when you first start it'll be physically impossible to get the board that high, you need to develop your muscles and perfect the jump in order to get full height.
@jaypepepe9 жыл бұрын
+Cancer Cancer If you pop the board hard enough it will pop up up to a couple feet. But you have to jump even higher otherwise the board will hit your feet and not reach maximum potential. Then you use your feet to level off the board bringing the back of the board upwards.
@Dylan_Thomas18 жыл бұрын
+Spartn M It's all basically at the same time. Picture a lightning bolt. It definitely travels but it happens so fast it looks like the whole lightning bolt appears at once. When you do an ollie you have to do all the steps like a lightning bolt: one after the other but quick enough that it looks simultaneous. So yes, you have to be in the motion of jumping AS you lift the board up. Try doing hippie jumps for a bit, and then when you try to ollie do a hippie jump but kick the tale against the ground hard the moment you'd leave the board. Once you figure out the timing ollie's should seem so much simpler to you.

I don’t know why I’m here. I can Ollie but here’s a few tips for those who don’t know how to yet. But first a little story time. I got into skating last year and I’d use my brother’s board to ride around. 6 months ago I got my own board and I just tried to get used to riding first and then go to ollie. I’ve been riding and riding and went to try n Ollie. It took me so long because I never committed or out any effort so that time didn’t count. Then in a week of actually committing I was so close and I got the form in a day. I practiced and practiced. In half a week I finally landed and it took time to get used to the feel but it felt great after. The way I learned was by grabbing onto something, trying it on grass, doing it but instead of landing I keep my front foot on and back foot off. Once I was able to form it I tried landing it and I took all that time committing and I got it so I kept practicing and practicing to get better. The way I learned to do it is to pop, slide/flick, and jump but do it all in one motion or do it all at once. As soon as u pop, slide ur foot, and jump, then land ofc. That’s the end of the story. Keep on skating and never give up. Practice and practice until u get it no matter how long it takes.

the tricky part is when you ollie your backfoot must leave the tail behind you then up. once that goes down, it's all up to how smooth your front foot slides up to level the board. yes, you will have to jump when you move - the scary part is not trusting yourself and not sliding your front foot at all, doing this will most assuredly make it very likely you get the splits.

Cool bro! I just started skating six months ago. After I watched this video I picked up my skateboard for the first time, it took me thirty minutes to Ollie. After that, I landed pop shuvits, bs & fs 180s, and heelflips all within an hour. I swear though, I thought I'd never learn kick flips, they took me two hours. The next day, I went to El Toro and landing my first dolphin flip sex change on my first attempt! A little after that, I made a sponsor me tape and got sponsored! Over the next few months I did some stuff at the berrics and filmed some video parts, unfortunately all that stuff is lost now :( I'm thinking of retiring from skating now though because it's getting a little boring now. Maybe I should try BMX now.

The pop isn't the moment whe the back leaves the ground; it's actually the opposite. The FRONT of the board making air is the actual "pop," although in order for this to happen you gotta push with your BACK foot and then slide your front foot. Basically, the push with the back foot comes before the jump (or "pop") and slide. Hella confusing, but that's physics for ya.

Ok my predicament is that I can never get the back wheels off the ground and I think its either bc I only slide my front foot a bit past the hardware or bc I start sliding my foot too early. Work your magic gimme tips!
@boltzmannbrain86984 жыл бұрын
I had not been able to do Ollies my whole life and I was embarrassed by it. I also could not get my back wheels of the ground. I got a set of skatertrainers and was able to nail the mechanics of the Ollie that same day. I used them for a week and took them off. I then worked on stationary Ollies until I nailed that down. Finally I moved to moving ollies. One thing I found is that you need to have your front foot on its side dragging forward before you do the pop of the tail. Also, the pop is not done as your weight comes down on the board. That will keep the tail from rising. Instead, the pop needs to happen after moving upward from the crouch so that your weight is off the tail as you pop it. People knock the skatertrainers by saying you need to learn to Ollie when moving. But if you have been unable to do that for years, the trainers will give you a boost of confidence that it can be done, so don’t give up. I recommend you try those because you cannot get the appropriate tail pop on grass or carpet. Also set your phone up at board height to record your attempts and review what you have done.

from what I can see the slide of the foot is something that affects the jump hight, Personally, I think that all of you are "ollieing" off the ground your just not very high up, You just need to commit and go for it. you don't even need to land on the board, just see how high you can get it... Originally I thought that you needed to "pop" harder and the slide was just to help and to level the board but when you slow the first shot down by 0.25, you can see that the slide is the main thing about the jump. it's that pop that starts the whole thing with a bend and a turn in the board that allows you to pull upwards. skateboarding is hard. when you are practicing try to practice in the afternoon one day and in the morning the next. this will optimize your next ollie's timing another thing is positive enforcement of you have someone watching you and there good at cheering you on, your brain naturally likes skateboarding and ollieing even more... that and they can see what is happening under the board. bonus point of you dream about skateboarding the night late which means your brain is assessing what happened and trying to help you. sorry for the bad grammar and misspelling.

Its not magically flying :P As far as I know (super beginner) the pop is what lifts the board off the ground. It like when you go to pick your board up and you pop the tail and catch the board. If you jump and do that the boar will lift. Then you have to level it out, which is why you drag your foot. This may be wrong, again I'm a beginner :D
@Clarensee10 жыл бұрын
jordieman I don't think that's it, because... when you pick up your board it flies RIGHT AT YOU, not up. My question is why when you're on the board and kick it, it flies straight up.

This video really helped me improve my technique though. I never realized that you have to start sliding your foot before the tail hits the ground from the pop.
