Quick tip: Try to bend your upper body forward (toeside) rather than bending your legs when tucking down, just like J.B. does at 7:56. In my opinion this is one of the biggest secrets in skateboarding and works much better than the usual advice to "bend your legs". I used to bend my legs for my first seven years of skateboarding, but after changing to bending my upper body forward, my skateboarding progression became MUCH QUICKER and MUCH SAFER. The counter intuitive thing about bending your upper body forward is that your body will automatically bend your legs when you do this motion.

This is spot on for what many of us face when dropping in. I, like the student, have a strong habit of keeping my WHOLE FOOT on the back of the board. (I also slipped in once because of it). My question is, when/how does the back foot go back into my regular riding position? Thanks!
@SkateparkLessons
@SkateparkLessons Жыл бұрын
Good question Greg, Set your feet accordingly just before you carve up and into frontside or backside carve. Riding position helps you be prepared but certain tricks require exaggerated stance so I’ll set up just before 💙🛹💙

JB, dude, last year (1st year of skating), I got the drop in on a small 3’ quarter, repeated like 20 times, the next week I went back, warmed up, went for it and slammed hard backwards. It’s spooked me and I’m struggling to work up to it again. I had a question if you could help a brother out (you already do so much!). I ride ace AF1s and I love them babies loose. When I start trying to drop in again do you suggest tightening them up so the board is a bit more stable or sticking some harder bushings in? Thanks as always dude always appreciate your content (I must’ve watched this video 40 times trying to work up the balls to hit the drop in again)

I can and have dropped in, but it’s always felt a bit sketchy. I understood the motion, but these extra tips look like they’ll be really helpful. I definitely feel I’m not tucking enough. Time to break out the quarterpipe this weekend. One thing I always find though is that when I do it on a mini ramp, I feel like I’m travelling way too fast as I reach the opposite coping and end up bailing 😖

Love your video's JB! These are amazing and clear intro videos. Just starting my skate career really (at 47!) so these vids come in real handy :) Question, for the drop-in, I find that if I put my toes closer to the "V" of my tail, close to the bolts instead of the back of tail (while still having some heal on the ground) I feel better during the roll-out in transition. If my toes are too-close to the back of the tail(before drop) there's greater chance for back-board slip-out. Does that make sense?

Great lesson. I’m learning to drop in and I’m practising the movement on the top of a ramp but every time I put the wheels on the decline I lean forwards and the board slides a little and I back out. I guess from this video it’s all about commuting to going forward and the slide won’t make a difference. Just got to commit.

Had to come back and watch this again for a refresher. I've been dropping in on the 5ft at my local indoor place and that's been working out so tried the 6ft 6in last night... And slammed to the flat bottom! 😆 Thankfully I can see where I went wrong and watching this back just confirmed it. I'll get it next week 🤙
@SkateparkLessons
@SkateparkLessons Жыл бұрын
You’re a savage Shaun! Stoked you’re going for it. Key things to remember, You need to bend your knees and tuck down INTO your drop in so it’s one solid motion of commitment that uses your body weight to your advantage. As you commit, your head needs to leaned out over your front foot to avoid going backwards. 3/4 way down the ramp, start standing back up to “transition” or change your direction from going down the steep ramp, to going across the ground. Land or slam, full commitment 💪🏽
@shaundavies314
@shaundavies314 Жыл бұрын
@@SkateparkLessons Thanks for the advice mate, very much appreciated 🤙 I think my mistake was standing up too soon rather than staying tucked, so of course gravity takes over and I fell. I’ll be back at it next week. I’m really enjoying skating something a bit bigger to be honest rather than getting frustrated with mini ramp tricks. It’s far easier to generate some speed when you have gravity on your side so now I can get backside and frontside turns (with the occasional cheeky slash) I get more of an actual run. 😎🛹
