There are some Ice skaters and there is Stéphane Lambiel. He is the one who gives you the creeps, he is a poet, more than a performer, he is.

I truly believe retiring from competition freed him. While he is both an amazing artist and athlete, I think in his heart he is more of an artist. It feels like he lands his jumps with much more ease, now that he doesn't have the pressure of competitions anymore and can truly just feel the music. Watching him dance is incredibly moving because he emits pure joy and passion. He deserves only the best.

Stephane is a complete artist and a true "skater's skater." I could watch him perform every day, and always learn something, see something in a new way. He's a wonderful presence on the ice.

Sorry for responding so late, but I just read your comment. I wanted to say that it's not like Stephane has suddenly become "clean" in his skating (whatever that means - clean jumps, skating itself?), his skating has been clean before. It really depends on the program and each particular performance. Stephane has had some mistakes also while skating this program - less than in some other programs, though.

That may be because this style, while very beautiful, comes completely naturally to Stephane, and is therefore comparatively easy for him. When the program is more difficult and/or when Stephane tries new styles, it's understandable that mistakes are more frequent, the skating can look slower, not so smooth at times, and so on.

Also, if it's his not so clean competitive performances that you are remembering and comparing this to, then I must say that you can't really compare a show performance to competitive ones. Stephane's peformance was smooth and clean most of the times when he skated his lyrical 'Un giorno per noi' ('Romeo') program, or his genius 'Ne me quitte pas', while his competitive performances at the time were not.
