I agree but one thing that crossed my mind when reading your comment and listening to the lyrics is that these days young people would be glued to their phone on Tinder at the railway station, not "cigarettes and magazines" thinking of their girl back home. So the song is timeless in its quality but unfortunately the time it depicts is long gone.

There's a vid in this stack >> of him singing this song 42 years earlier in 1975 on a show. 63 now, I grew up with his music. There is something so poignant to me about hearing both, and the mind that hatched those lyrics and that melody and mood so long ago savoring it so many times since and still today. He's a brilliant guitarist, writer and singer. The crispness of his voice in the early vid is so impressive, but the quaver in his voice in this one is deeply touching in a different way. A song so relevant at both ages.

Stunning performance from Paul , it’s a great song , His voice although not as strong as it was has developed a frailty that suits this and most of his songs perfectly , There’s a longing and loneliness in this song , That intro / outro is beautiful and Paul’s lyrics are always on point , a brilliant songwriter, Watch the people watching him , That’s awe , Also just noticed Paul’s long fingernails which he uses as picks , Genius at work here , No auto tune here folks , One man , his song about missing his girlfriend and that beautiful Martin guitar . Age has not withered his genius

A warm version of an old favorite that certainly takes one home. Straight from the head to the heart... Thanks Señor Simon - Juano Lippi

One of my absolute favourites. I saw Paul on stage in Stockholm in 2018 - I'd planned my 5-week trip around Europe, then got an email saying he was performing across northern Europe. Bang! All plans out the window, Stockholm went onto the itinerary, and I saw him perform for the second time in my life. First time was a few years earlier in Australia, when he performed just a couple of miles down the road from my house, I couldn't miss that one :-)

I love Paul Simon and I've watched a lot of his early material such as his appearance on Dick Cavett, live musical appearances, etc and am just still constantly amazed, pleased and euphoric to hear his voice along with his beautifully written songs. It's sad to me to hear his voice age and the songs take on a different sound. A few years ago, I discovered a tribute to him of sorts from a Swedish band I think they were called "First Aid Kit" where they sung his song "America" which quickly led me to his accrual recording. I have to tell you that .. the song was such a profound experience for me, I got the sense of love, of journey, throwing caution to the wind with what must have been an adventure into the unknown never knowing where you might land. It brought out all these scary but exciting emotions for me. I then realized that Cathy was a real person and the song took on a sad overtone as this love they had was long ago lost. I can only imagine he thinks of her time to time.
