I was privileged to meet John McAleese a number of times. Believe it or not, the first time I met him was in the shower block in the guardroom at Cwrt-y-Gollen camp. I was also subject to great practical joke which John directly participated in. My mate served in The Regt, and he was involved in the BBC TV series that John and Eddy Stone featured in. They worked for an ex-Regt bloke who ran, 'Stirling Services.' They did all sorts of things from teaching close protection courses, to running team building exercises for corporate bodies. They also ran air soft weekends- using an MoD urban warfare training facility. My mate asked me if I would be willing to assist with training and input- the air soft brigade wanted to be taught proper infantry tactics, and they were short of instructors- 150 airsoft bods were due to attend. I agreed, thinking it might be good craic, and it proved to be the case. John McA was involved in providing input, so he was floating around. I had worked a set of nights that week, I was in the police at the time, and on the Friday evening, I attended a Regimental dinner and beer session at the Adelphi. My mate picked my up around 2300 hrs, and we had driven down to Cwrt-y-Gollen camp- arriving shortly before 0300 hrs. By lunchtime on the Saturday, I was in need of some gonk, so I cleared it with my mate, he gave me the go ahead, so I retired to snatch an hour on my dossbag and camp bed in an office, I crashed out immediately. The next thing I was aware of, was waking up and hearing a broad Scottish accent shouting, "Fecking hell! Ye've eaten all ma chocolate biscuits ya cunt!" I was dazed and groggy from sleep, and something was stuck on my face, I peeled a melted chocolate biscuit off my face- all the while John was shouting, "Ye've eaten all ma fuckin' biscuits!!" There were crumbs down the front of my smock, and an empty wrapper from a pack of chocolate digestive on my groin. I protested my innocence to John, who continued to shout things like, "What the fuck! You've eat ALL my biscuits!!" At that point, I heard loud sniggering from the other side the office door, and my mate made an entrance and declared it was payback for a wind up I pulled on him a few years earlier. When he applied to do Selection with 23 in Manchester, I rang his workplace and asked to speak to him. When he came to the phone, I introduced myself as, 'Captain Jackson from 23,' I then asked him a series of questions- eg asking him, "Why 23, why us?" My mate bit and began replying in earnest, "It's the ultimate challenge Sir......blah......blah.......blah!" I kept it up for about five minutes before I revealed it was me. My mate swore blind he would have his revenge one day, and he did- with John McA's assistance. After the prank, I was given the soubriquet, 'Chocolate Pete,' by John & Co and my mate would regularly be asked, "Hey, is Chocolate Pete coming down this weekend?" LOL :)
