This song is about a dying monk on the Skellig Islands off the coast of Kerry, Ireland. Monks copied holy texts on the Skilligs during the dark ages. They are very isolated islands. A Gaelic monastery was founded at the summit of Skellig Michael in the 7th century. The Skelligs have a history going back to Irish Celtic mythology. It is a very haunting place and this is a very haunting song.

O light the candle, John The daylight has almost gone The birds have sung their last The bells call all to mass Sit here by my side For the night is very long There's something I must tell Before I pass along I joined the brotherhood My books were all to me I scribed the words of God And much of history Many a year was I Perched out upon the sea The waves would wash my tears, The wind, my memory I'd hear the ocean breathe Exhale upon the shore I knew the tempest's blood Its wrath I would endure And so the years went by Within my rocky cell With only a mouse or bird My friend; I loved them well And so it came to pass I'd come here to Romani And many a year it took Till I arrived here with thee On dusty roads I walked And over mountains high Through rivers running deep Beneath the endless sky Beneath these jasmine flowers Amidst these cypress trees I give you now my books And all their mysteries Now take the hourglass And turn it on its head For when the sands are still 'Tis then you'll find me dead O light the candle, John The daylight is almost gone The birds have sung their last The bells call all to mass

I have been listening Loreena since the early 90's and I have loved every progression of her style and substance since first hearing the CD "The Visit". "The Mask and the Mirror" brought a whole new definition of "World Music" to me. The musicians and the recording locations were brilliant in the differing ambiances. Her mix of Celtic and Middle Eastern sounds, strings, percussion and melodies are astounding.

ordinarily I don't watch the videos that go with the music, but this one held me from beginning to end: never having seen (but read it several times) Lord of the Rings, I spent much of the time open mouthed at the beauty, and the pain depicted, and weeping at the sense of loss. And the joy at the end. Thank you for this. It's stunning.
@saciji13 жыл бұрын
It really is lovely - a big thank you. Forgot how magical I found the whole Lord of the Rings and how beautiful were the names of the men and women. Tolkein was a brilliant linguist of ancient languages and cultures of the British Isles and Scandinavia. His ability to create a living world within the imagination of his readers, far before the time of digi creations can only be regarded as awesome in its original meaning and usage

I discovered Loreena McKennit at a discount store, where I bought Live In Paris and Toronto for $2.99. Best music money I ever spent. Still unopened. Had never heard her music, but took a chance anyway. What the hell, $2.99, how could I lose. Never imagined how wonderful she was. If I'm ever in a hospital, or anywhere, and on my way to shuffling off this mortal coil, I want her to be playing 24/7, so her singing is the sound I take with me to wherever I'm headed.

This is one of the best on youtube. It is a work of art - a combination of Lord of the Rings, a magnificent movie trilogy, Loreena McKennit's singing, and she is as close to a celestial singer as you will find on this planet, and liana17 has had the vision to combine them and produce what we see and admire here. I watch this every so often when I need some inspiration and to experience something beautiful. Ane yes liana17 I would be priviledged to be a friend of yours.

I was listening to a play of my thousands of songs of the most diverse styles in the world. Because it is Sunday, as a devoted Mormon I knew it was coming time when I must begin to listen to only religious oriented music. The last song playing after "What Do You Want From Me" was this sad beautiful song that I knew was Loreena Mckennitt but I didn't know the title or its story but I hoped it had a religious subject matter because I yearned to hear it again. After much investigation of the song via a description by the lovely Miss Mckennitt about an island of Irish monks separated from the world to scribe the words of God I had, not only my wish, but after watching a number of KZbin's wonderful videos of the song I most assuredly considered it a miracle and a blessing of the Lord.

You got over a million views because people are thrilled with Lord of the Rings (I walked through knee-high snow abt a mile to get the 2nd paperback in 1975, and read it every year after for about 5 years) and also because people who like Loreena LOVE Loreena.
