Great podcast! never met Matthew but heard of him from the youth work hes done on my old estate Bridgehall Stockport and by all accounts a top guy. I was same era growing up and whilst not as much gunplay and gangs it was rough and ready with lots of crime and drugs. I know a few people from the Stockport section in the gangwar book so his story resonates with me. A lot of my old mates are locked up still but i turned myself around through hard graft. All the best pal.

What those of us who grew up in (and survived) that era of South Manchester went through, and the f'kry we took for granted, is something hardly anyone else in the country could ever truly understand. None of us we're left unaffected into adulthood, and a lot grew into barely functioning (if at all) adults. You didn't even have to be a gangster/criminal to constantly live in both a state of fear and vengefulness. That shit truly stays with you for life.

Skelly, I have just watched and listened, and I positively and respectfully admire your positive turnaround from the dark side of your past and where you are now in your life. This podcast is an inspirational one, and I truly hope those young ones who want to turn from the gun and now use a (shank) knife as the killing weapon on the UK streets listen and hear your story and say, "This is wrong," and pull up their pants, and start to love living life for longer. 👏👏👏kicking up dust. What an incredibly talented individual who has witnessed and experienced the harsh realities of street life. He has turned his life around and now serves as a positive example for the youth. His story is truly fascinating, and he should consider writing a book about it. When I moved to Manchester in 2004 from London, I went from one chaotic city to another that was even more challenging. This was during the height of the gang wars, and I had no knowledge of Manchester’s gang culture at the time. I initially lived in the notorious Gooch gang territory before moving to Rusholme for student accommodation. I can count the number of times I witnessed shocking madness. People think London has gangs, but in reality, it’s mainly crews and postcode wars. True gangs are found in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Glasgow.

It's all a cycle, where the adults around the youth are also to blame for it all, but those same adults went through the same things and had the same influences themselves growing up; so history repeats itself generation after generation. Truth, education and strong yet humble guidance is what I believe is needed the most to break these destructive cycles in those kinda environments. I grew up in the same areas in the same exact eras Skelly is talking about here, so I know any solutions will never be as simple as any amount of talk will inevitably make it out to be, but it all doesn't have to be that complicated either.

Hmmm.. I've known Matthew Norford since Royce Primary School & would chill with him in the "square" his bedroom, with his brothers... Remember the TRU Days?! We used to listen to No Limit Soilders for hours & hours on end until Ingrid told us to go home!😂 I was close to his uncle Eustace too. Glad you have stopped the madness and are trying to help the youth. Every 25th December, I always think of you. Hope your (3) children are doing well.. Your brothers too, Especially JJ. RIP Gary and Nathan..❤ Bless

I was locked up with his brother JJ in 2006-07 Lancasters Farms. He definitely got caught up in some stuff he will regret no doubt but looking back he had a good heart.

Thank you for leaving your comment means a lot to me. GOD❤ bless you and the youth just need to be given a chance to be a youth and see they are cared about and can be anything in this world but a gangster or drug dealer. Consistency as well u have to be there for that young person whole heartedly or it won’t work. ❤
