Here's a theory about levels 1-3: at least one of them could very well be the test level Koizumi spoke of containing a now removed Luigi. Quote: Iwata: "Regrets?" Koizumi: "One goes all the way back to Super Mario 64. When we made the first prototype, Mario and Luigi were on a flat field." Iwata: "Both of them?" Koizumi "Yes. We ran it that way, but when we made the landforms, because of hardware limitations we had a choice between cutting Luigi or making more elaborate landforms. Then, in tears, we had to ask Luigi to leave." Emphasis on " we ran it that way." The dev team may have kept the test area as well as Luigi until, during the final stages of development, noticing framerate drops due to limited hardware. Nice Video Skelux, and I got atleast 1 idea for one of the stages, it's the metal cap area it's a cave, has unique textures and models for the crystals and it's near Peach's Castle which is one of the Hub worlds, so it would make sense that somewhere in development they made it a much smaller level and just put the metal cap switch there.

No. It's just a debug menu that Nintendo used to make sure all their levels worked properly. It was to test levels. It's better than having to walk to a painting.

I think he's mentioning the pre-release footage. The game's listed as "Super Mario 64 (temporary)", which I suppose isn't too surprising, "Super Mario 64" isn't very creative and does seem like a placeholder. The game only being listed as "Super Mario" in the level select suggests as much. Probably just stuck as a title during the course of development for whatever reason.
@6077 жыл бұрын
Comrade Crunch I suppose so. But it's interesting, as this title seems to have inspired many other titles for the N64. At least, I suppose not all of them were supposed to be placeholders.

I'm pretty sure the slide was an early version of Princess Peach's Secret Slide (considering the fact that the door that usually takes you upstairs in the castle used to instead take you directly to the Bowser 1 fight, making it possible that only the Foyer was accessible). Then for whatever reason they moved that side to TTM, and made a new Secret Slide for the Foyer

Would it be possible that these levels, or at least one of them, had something to do with the 64DD add-on that was planned to release? They were making an expansion for this game, maybe some lost levels were related to this in some way? Im not sure if the DD wouldve worked that way, but imagine being in a level that triggered something on the expansiondisk to load? Again, Im not sure if the N64 and the DD worked together in this way...
@rhcorr7 жыл бұрын
I think you didn't consider the possibility that the first 3 levels are, indeed, the main menu (title) stages. Having seen a bit of boundary break for SM64 I know that even the "flat screens", like the save select screen, are actually 3D models rendered in real time in a room of sorts. Logos etc are also sometimes flat surfaces rendered in 3D while the camera is fixed. The mario face is evidently also rendered in a "room" of its own that could very well be considered a "level". Who knows? Other ideas are: some of these missing levels are used for the end sequence, or maybe a scrapped yoshi / luigi level. Maybe level 32 was simply a special load sequence to test sound effects (echo). The first one (level 1) is probably indeed a proof of concept level which was removed from the final build.
@ivboy33007 жыл бұрын
32 was most likely the unused yellow cap switch stage.

There's a well-known effect in Jolly Roger Bay that only shows up until you collect the first star. The sky is darker and there is more fog in the level. Kind of a long shot, but perhaps this has something to do with Level 38's JRB-like effects?
@wakkowarner1237 жыл бұрын
Woah, neat! What an interesting video. Just as a bit of constructive criticism, Skelux -- I'd lower background noise more than you did. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to hear your commentary, which should be more isolated and audible. It's the main focus.
@NickGoblin27 жыл бұрын
They could be part of Peach’s castle. Possibly the Castle could have had much more loading sequences until they were merged into one level, making the chopped up sequences of Peach’s castle completely useless. Just my theory.

2:09 anyone got footage or context for this? I don't recognise this at all from 64 DS
@samjaques57637 жыл бұрын
If you want to change the context of a level it might be for when koopa troopa is added to bob omb battlefield or where in whomps fortress you have a change from it being a boss fight at the top to a small tower and then you also then get access to the owl, it might have been easier to duplicate the level and change a bit rather than change the coding for the whole level, also in the jolly roger bay you have the change or there being the ship wreck in the 1st variation of the game to there being a floating ship in the next variation with the eel now residing in a home in the wall, just some possibilites for changes need to duplicate levels.

I think the audio could be a little better as you made your voice audio the same volume as the game and it can be a little hard to hear your voice at times. Examples of this happening is at 3:12 when a 1 up mushroom is collected and at 4:15 when the wing cap is collected the track makes it hard to hear your voice.
