The first time I come across skeps was a video from the Netherlands with some older gentleman bee keeping with skeps, that is just beautiful beekeeping to me , I’m in Australia the rules and laws won’t let us have hives like this but I still want to learn about making these wonderful hives. I’ll be watching all your videos on these awesome skeps .🙏

Ah that is lovely to hear, yes the Dutch and Germans still have an active skep making tradition. I am currently on one of the Indian Ocean Territories of Australia, Cocos Keeling, working on a bee project here. I have been starting to have a go at weaving baskets with palm leaves, however weaving with the washed up rope and fishing nets would be more similar to the skep weaving. Straw baskets for bees are so good for bees to remain well insulated and healthy, it's such a shame that the rules, like in America are biased towards conventional frame hives. Where in Australia are you based?

I wish this had been available when I made my first skep 👍 but I was lucky to meet a lovely lady on a Bee Association stand at Gardeners World Live who showed me what to do. I did say thank you at the time, but she will never know how grateful I am for her passing on her skills. I did complete my first one, quite a few years ago now, and did start a second one but I never got around to finishing it - even though I’ve got everything I need for it. I think I might try to get my second skep completed soon. Thanks for the inspiration 👏👏 🇬🇧

Oh that's good to hear, and let me know when you do finish it! It is addictive when you find/ make the time to make skeps!

Any prizes for being 3 years late to this challenge and using all the wrong materials (hay & brambles) 😊? Wish I could add a photo, I’m quite pleased with the results for a first ever attempt. Your videos have been very helpful. Thank you.
