What is colliders and what is LODs?
@sketch34364 жыл бұрын
Colliders allow objects to not go through other objects, they detect collisions. Whereas LODs (level of detail) is a component that can be added to a gameObject, where you can select different resolution of a model for different LODs (i.e. LOD0 is a high resolution mesh, LOD1 is a slightly lower, and so on), then the LOD group will keep track of the players distance from it and will swap out to different LODs depending on the distance, this process improves performance since your not constantly rendering a high resolution mesh. Here are some documentation links Colliders: docs.unity3d.com/Manual/CollidersOverview.html LODs: docs.unity3d.com/Manual/LevelOfDetail.html Hope this helps 😊

Hey so im pretty new to all these things and i found this video very helpful. One question i have though is what a LOD system is?
@sketch34364 жыл бұрын
A LOD (Level Of Detail) is a system that given different models will switch them out depending on the distance between the player and the gameObject. LODs are used for performance as higher detailed models are more costly than lower resolution models, therefore, you add lower resolution versions of a model into a LOD system so that as the player moves away the lower resolution model is rendered instead. A good LOD implementation will have many LODs and fade between at intervals that makes it difficult for the player to notice the transition between models. In a LOD system LOD0 refers to the highest resolution, LOD1 the second highest resolution and so forth. Here is a good video for how to set it up in Unity: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5exqomJZ8RpnJo Hope this helps :D

If your new optimization techniques here are some key techniques you can look up: - LODs - Occlusion culling - GPU instancing for materials - Combing meshes into one mesh - Making gameObjects static to utilise batching, light map baking etc

That can sometimes happen if you do not install the entirety of the pack, usually, you can just delete these conflicting scripts and it will all work fine. What's the best system for storing assets? Do you have like a root folder you holder everything then import individually into each project? I have Unity on my SSD and would like to store project files and assets on the HDD while still running/processing the program on SSD. Is this possible?
@sketch34364 жыл бұрын
Do you mean storing assets externally from Unity or how to store assets that your using in your project?
@LukeTeyler4 жыл бұрын
@@sketch3436 I was curious as to how they're built in the project. Say I've got Unity on my c: drive, and I've got assets in one root folder on my d:drive. I import individual assets into my unity project. Finish the project, build it and store on my d: drive. So basically the project is just making a reference to my assets? And it will run on whichever drive I put the build on? I only have 400gb left on the ssd so I'm trying not to fill it up with assets and project files, curious what others' set up is like
@sketch34364 жыл бұрын
@@LukeTeyler I don't think Unity will allow references to assets, everything that is in your project has to be within the 'Assets' folder of your project. This, in turn, means that your project can be located on any drive (including SSD) as all its dependencies and within a single root folder. If you want to have your project run quicker than you'll have to place the entire project folder to the SSD. Hope this helps :)

Hi there! Somewhat new to unity, what does LOD actually mean/do I’ve seen it around on my stuff but haven’t got a clue what they do ahaha
@sketch34364 жыл бұрын
LOD stands for Level Of Detail. Essentially, it is just different resolutions of a 3d model, i.e. LOD0 would be a very high resolution (high poly count) model where it is very detailed and looks great, then LOD1 will be have less detail and so. A LOD Group then takes these different resolutions of the same model and switches them out in game depending on how far the player is from the model. We do this for performance, if every model was super high quality then the computer would struggle to render the scene. Additionally, when an object is far away from the camera the player wouldn't be able to notice the small details so it is perfectly fine to switch in a lower resolution model, a good LOD Group setup is one in which the switching between different LODs is difficult to notice. Hope this helps :D

Is Unity better than Unreal Engine 4?
@sketch34365 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be the best to ask as I have had far more experience with Unity than Unreal. I will say that Unity's interface is easier to learn than Unreal. If you don't know how to program Unreal is the better option as it has visual scripting, Unity doesn't have it yet, but it is coming in the future. Unreal also has more powerful graphics, however, yet again Unity is constantly improving their graphics and with each update, they are becoming closer and closer to the Unreal engines power. Unreal engine is also more commonly used in AAA games, Unity is generally used more in an indie environment, so if you would like to eventually make a career in the AAA game industry it would be more beneficial learning Unreal. This is a lot of info but to sum it all up both engines are great, I would suggest trying both for a week or so and just go with whatever one you feel most comfortable with. Hope this helps, and good luck with whatever engine you choose 😊

The Unity asset store license essentially states that all assets uploaded can be used commercially unless they are labelled as a ''restricted asset' (like the book of the dead assets etc). So I believe that these assets can be used commercially as none of them were labelled restricted. But as all legal stuff goes it's way more complicated so I cannot be certain. I have highest doubts for the Sandro T assets (Sun Temple & Flooded Grounds) as the quality is too high for free use, in my opinion, furthermore, it doesn't come with a license 😒. So if you're serious with the creation and distribution of your game I would recommend emailing asset creators to be certain. Most creators have their contact details available on their profiles. Sorry for the long reply but this is one of the topics where it can be difficult to get a clear answer. Regardless, hopefully, this helps 😊
