Welcome back to another Sketchbook Time video! I've been asked a couple of times recently whether I would consider filming a video where I recommend a small collection of colours from the Caran d'Ache Luminance range that would be good for someone who is perhaps new to coloured pencils and would like to start building their own collection. Luminance pencils can be purchased individually (so far I've bought mine from Jackson's Art Supplies and PaperStory here in the UK), so here are my Top 16 pencils! As I mention in the video, these colours are my personal preference, and they work with the colour palette, style, and subject matter of my artwork. Each artist is different, and if you asked 100 artists to make their own palettes, each one would contain different shades! So please bear in mind that I'm speaking and advising from my own perspective. That being said, I hope that you enjoy this video even if your work is the polar opposite to mine! I think that it's always interesting to listen to the perspective of another artist, even if only to give us an insight into their process and decision making. Once I've swatched the different colours and talked to you about why I've included each one, I'll go on to make 'mini colour palettes' for different subjects using a few of the 16 colours each time, to show you how I would combine them in my work.
Here are the pencils I included in my collection: Dark Indigo, Sepia, Payne's Grey, Payne's Grey 30%, Light Cobalt Blue, Indanthrone Blue, Violet Grey, Burnt Sienna 50%, Burnt Sienna 10%, Dark Sap Green, Middle Verdigris, Light Malachite Green, Terracotta, Apricot, Herculanum Red, Brown Ochre 10%

Sadly, Luminance pencils are notorious for having a few pencils that are gritty and the quality of the color payoff is inferior. It's a bit of a hit or miss, of the 16 only one was gritty so that's pretty common.

@@Jazira13 I've noticed this with a couple of them! Most feel great to work with but I have two that are grittier than the others. Considering how expensive Luminance are, they should all be great quality really!

I agree!! I was more into bright/summery colors before I started binge watching Natasha's videos. Now I totally find myself drawn to all of these dark, moody, mysterious color schemes. UGH - this means I will be buying more supplies....because I just can't help myself of course!

I only have 24 and its all I need or want. They are wonderful. However, I love Derwent's Lightfast better. They seem less streaky and smoother. I actually have tons of watercolor. Way too many! LOL! Blessings.

In 2022 sixteen open stock Luminance are way cheaper if you are in US and order from UK, and weirdly even shipping is cheaper.

Hi, Natasha! I am so obsessed with your channel… and most of the art materials in it! I have binge-watched your videos and am learning a lot from them. Okay, I took the plunge and bought the Luminance Set. Yes, was watching the colored pencil videos. At first, I was only looking at the 16 + maybe 4. But ended up purchasing the 100 set. Oohlala. My excuse? I wish I had! Hahahahaha. So, yes, you made me buy it! Just kidding. I’m looking forward to swatching and then using them. Wish me luck! I’m such a consumer slave. Hahhahaha Keep on creating your videos. -Dindin from Manila

Hi Nesia! I really like the Moleskine sketchbooks, or if you'd like something similar to that but for about a third of the price, the Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbooks are amazing!

Those colors are great but then all Luminance colors are great. Can I ask you what kind of paper is that one in the sketchbook ? I'm having trouble finding a good paper to swatch. And not specifically for the Luminance. Seems that the softer core, more waxy pencils need a different paper than the harder core more oily ones. Everyone says a paper with some tooth, and I tried a couple of different ones but it seems it's not working well for all the pencils. I'm not an artist, I'm a colorist. But i like to copy images from a book to a good paper or print a pdf image. I want to use the same paper to swatch, but can't seem to find one that gives nice results. We might have different papers in the US, but do you have any suggestions? I might not be an artist per say, but I want to do things to come out nicely, I know colors and I'm pretty particular ( kind of a perfectionist which is not good). The colors you chose are great together, my favorites too, I will keep this when I want to choose a palette for a certain subject. Thank you 😊

What kind of paper do you use with your luminance pencils?

It varies, but the Stonehenge white paper is very good (it comes in a pad).

Beautiful! What happens if you add watercolour around and over the pencils? Do they block the watercolour, do they smudge?
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 2 жыл бұрын
I keep meaning to experiment more with using the pencils in conjunction with watercolour, but most of the pencils I own shouldn't smudge if they come into contact with watercolour. I would probably use watercolour first and then draw on top with the pencils, but you could use pencils first and I imagine that they would block the watercolour as they're oil or wax based. :)
