Thank you Doug for sharing your sketch for your beloved mother, I have to tell you that I did exactly the same when my late husband was in hospital. I treasure those sketches as they mean such a lot to me. Just being there and concentrating on capturing that moment I found comfort. Catching up with your back postings having just recently discovered your channel and really enjoying your work and guidance.😊

You've inspired me to just "go for it" and try different things in my sketchbook. I lost my mom this year too and it's good to see someone else took comfort in creating their way through the sadness. Thank you.

So nice to see your sketchbook! So many only share the big successes without showing the working pieces it takes to get to them. It always takes work and practice. I feel the sketch work improves my drawings and painting. It is fun to just play in a sketchbook but it all adds to your skills later. Great to see your ideas and thoughts behind the sketches.

Absolutely adore your work. You don't need a $2k worth of exspensive markers, pencils, paints, pens, etc. You need a pen & a few watercolor pans or water-soluble inks to product inspiring sketches. 🎨 🖋 ✒. Genius is in simplicity 👍🏽

Wow. That blue & red ink you used, would you happen to remember their brand/name is? I’m a new sub, this is my second video so I apologize if you’ve already stated so in other videos. Gorgeous sketchbooks….it’s 12:30 a.m and I now want to get out of bed to paint lol, very inspiring & just simply incredible works of art! Ty for sharing!

Ahh thanks Nikkie. Those inks are Diamine inks. I got a set of 16 from cult pens here in the UK the blue is Little Micky and the Red Is Ancient Copper. cultpens.com/products/diamine-ink-12ml-set-of-16 Hope this helps. 🙏

I love inks, too. I'm going to get the Derwent Inktense pans. I don't remember if you've used them. I would love the pencils & blocks, too. Someday 😊

I was a hobby photographer for about 30 years. A big change in my life meant I lost 20 years of prints and negatives and I soon got over it. Yes, they would rekindle memories but that fraction of a second that it took to grab a shot could never have created emotions and memories that sat ten minutes with a sketchbook could store in my brain. Even though I know this, I rarely sketch ‘on location’ with a sketchbook, I take a snap on my phone and then plan to sketch it when I get home but I rarely do. As I progress through my 70s, I feel the need to make meaningful memories are so important as no one knows when those memories we have just being in places and with people I love will fade.

That's all so true Graham and rather beautifully put. I certainly value photos but as you said the memories that surround sketches and those sketching days are somehow richer. Especially when you are sketching with other people. That's a lot of fun. Sorry to hear about you loosing those photos. That's pretty tough. That said it's important to sometimes have a reminder that sitting and absorbing a landscape often has 100 times the value of a photo unveiled in a cupboard. All intresting thoughts and it all a reminded to cherish every day. 👍

Hi Doug, I enjoy your videos and recently viewed one about sketchbooks and was extremely impressed with your pen portraits, something I really like. Where can I view these more fully?

@@davedrive2003 I need to do more demos on life drawing and face portraits. I've not covered that much in my channel I'm afraid. There is some stuff on my Instagram channel. Cheers Dave

Hi. New subscriber here and I haven’t had time to binge watch your videos…. Sorry if you already have a video of what I’m about to request…. but I’d love to see your process of drawing vehicles, particularly in the style of the tractor at 8:32. That looks really fun to sketch. =) Thanks for sharing about your mom. Mine also recently passed away. I sketched her hands and the view from her hospital room window. Her hands bring back painful memories (‘cause it doesn’t look alive) but the view, even though it was sketched on the day she passed, brings comfort. Maybe because it is of a tree with pink flowers…. maybe it is the color that brings comfort, I don’t know. Maybe I was subconsciously comforted by the fact that her suffering had ended…. and one of the things I saw nearby was pink flowers.

Sorry to hear about your mother. It's wierd how we feel so powerless in those situations. Often sketching is about all we can do to keep occupied. I like you am glad my mums suffering is over but still miss her. There are more vehicles on the way and I'll do a tractor just for you. 😁😁
