Thanks for excellent summary of sketchbook kit. I totally agree about limiting the amount you take out and about, keep it easy to grab and carry and you will bring it more often. Only slight difference is I like to have a small cheap sketchbook alongside the better one - the cheap one is ballpoint only and gets me drawing on days when I don't feel like it because it doesn't matter if it's only for 5 minutes and a bit rubbish.
@Skeazix2 ай бұрын
Same. I've started making little sketchbooks out of all different types of paper, and somehow knowing that I'm drawing on a repurposed paper bag lowers the stakes and gets me drawing without being precious about my "good" sketchbook.

I’m 58 years old, had an Art scholarship for college but had to drop out because my Mother became ill and I kind of lost my creative mind after that. I’ve picked up some crafts over the years like crocheting but every time I tried to get back into the drawing / painting groove I quickly became frustrated because I had lost my touch. 😔 No matter how much I tried it wasn’t coming to me so naturally as it had back in the 80’s and it’s really been a bummer! But, a couple of days ago YOU popped up! You told me to give it a try again and to go get that empty sketch book out, find any pen and draw my breakfast. That’s it. Easy. No pressure (like college was) and no need to be perfect. So, I did. I didn’t draw my breakfast because I’m a night owl but I drew my iPhone and the song that was playing ( Sweet Jane by the Cowboy Junkies - one of my favs) and before I knew it I had created an entire page of thoughts and color and 2 hours had flown by! I’ve done this every night now and I just wanna HUG YOUR NECK! I feel like a kid again and can’t wait to try some of those brush markers! ❤ Lots of love and thanks from Oklahoma 😘

I’ve done the Bootcamp - lots if fun! I love Seawhite of Brighton sketchbooks here in the UK - great mixed media paper and I can get hardback in all different sizes but also the the soft cover super lightweight but still great quality paper. Inexpensive too.

When I started it was with a sketchbook and a #2 pencil. Doesn't get simpler than that. My current "go kit" has several pencils, some Microntas, a kneaded eraser, and a makeup brush for graphite blending. I do my painting at home.

It took me a long time to figure out my sketchbook preferences. Im primarily a watercolor artist, but for quick sketches, i prefer an off-white sketchbook and soft cover. I dont actually like super thick paper for quick sketches. I want the paper to be thick enough that i can use a wash of watercolor but thin enough that i dont feel bad doing practice sketches or writing on it. ❤

I love this channel. I've been wanting to start drawing for years and never have. Just recently, I brought a sketchbook with me to an outing and, rather than pull out my phone, I pulled out my 'book. I barely drew anything, but just starting (half of a potted plant) felt SO good! It felt like stretching a sore muscle. Maybe it should be called a stretchbook? lol Thanks for all you do! Now I want to go look for a small courier bag... Something canvas...

Hi! I just finished my first sketchbook in January and immediately started the next one wich was waiting for me a couple of months. I started painting and drawing for my personal joy after many years not doing this. One thing I didn't like about making art was that there are all those finished sheets of art on paper and no good place to have them. Not on the walls, not in a folder. Then I saw sketchbook videos on yt, yes yours too - and I knew there may be a great place for every piece I create. I baught a cheap one with thin writing paper. I started with my watercolour pencils wich I have for 25 years, I got them for christmas when I was young and did draw. I worked with yt tutorials to improve and get ideas. I worked free to see if I get my mind on paper. I gifted myself with 8 halfpans of watercolour, including goldpaint and some horsehair brushes. I started to paint on watercolour paper and glue the paintings in my book. The new book consists of a mixedmedia paper, it drinks gluid colours too quick. So again I use the gluestick. I also baught a bunch of good felttip pens, reactivated my old fountain pen from school... Yes, the artkit forms itselves, according to the owner's needs. Thanks to your videos I soon took my kit outside. I take it wherever I expect some waiting time and it's a great thing to paint while waiting for the doc or for the child to have their appointment over. Or at scoutcamp ehen there is freetime at noon. Or at the public pool. Or elsewhere. Thank you for cheering me up and awaken the joy of sketchbooking/ artjournaling. And one big thing: I learned that it's ok not to be as good as others. It's for my personal joy, not for gallery 😅

@RubenEsq10 ай бұрын
My philosophy about sketchbooks is the exact opposite- *_"Leave Stress On The Outside Of An Open Sketchbook"._* That especially means not thinking about making the book "beautiful". I often write that on the first page of a new book to remind myself. Also, for me, leaving stress outside of an open sketchbook means no hardcover books. The intimidation of potentially "messing up" in a "real book" is more than I want to deal with, and I've heard that from many artists.

Hiya Danny, I met you and Koosje a long time ago here in NYC. I think it was a workshop/meetup down near Union Square/Astor place. Sketchbook School is awesome. Not for nothing, I don't know if you have weighed in on "Inktober", it would be great to get your input on that. Over the years, on and off, I have had great results with: for Sketchbooks, the Canson Multimedia XL series. It can handle gesso, gel medium, acrylics, watercolor and collage very well. Anything Strathmore is also great. I've also had luck just trying a few off-brand or generic at random if they were in an interesting size. I've gotten burnt at Staples and they lost my trust as a result, go with Michael's or Blick or similar Hobby Lobby kind of stores. Some people rave about Moleskine, I have been a little disappointed with those. Watercolors- I found the delightful Carand'ache small watercolor crayon set, these are fantastic. You use them like regular crayons, then dip your brush of choice in some water to taste and go to it. Pens: I like the 4 pen set from Faber-Castell/Pitt, and the usual Sakura Pigma Microns. I went through a period of just doing a lot of pencil- the Derwents are very good, and the Grumbacher fixative spritz to go with. Your regular drugstore cheapie ballpoints also work fine. Art Basics is a good line for gesso and gel medium if you are starting off, but if you are in, say, sketchbook #20, maybe a little fancier, the Golden brand is reliable. But, they expire and go bad after a few months, they will break down. So only get your larger size if you are going through a lot of it. Collage paper packs can be fun and inspiring, I like Tim Holz for that. Hope this helps, keep making cool art!!
