Highly recommend the 3d connexion mouse he's using. This is a solid example of time saving!

usually in construction your common rafters are birds mouthed over your top plate and your over hang is a little lower than the top plate, how can you do that? many thanks

Why does mine results to a hip roof but with a square/rectangle space at the middle. Is there a perfect ratio of length and width in order for it to work perfectly?

Except that it isn't built this way... the overhang & facia usually drop below the top plate, depending on the pitch.

Thats ONLY good if you are building a "play" model or you intend to use TRUSSES. If you are doing REAL WORLD FRAMING, that's not even close. How do you do it with a RAFTER on a top plate with a BIRDS MOUTH? - do you just lower the "top plane of the building" where it EQUALS where the actual framing will be??

I do this but to save time erasing things, I would choose the widest part of the roof and draw its half section (ie. the section from the ridge to the eaves), then use that to extrude around the building. Only the roof sections that are narrower would then result in geometry that needed erasing.

Hey Simon, how are you? Do you mind clarifying what you meant by your tip? I am not too easy on the English at times. If you can, thank you much in advance but it not thank you for simply sharing your tip here! Stay loved!

every time i try this the roof either doesn't follow the roof line correctly (overhang goes way out on some sections of the building) or it doesnt do the whole surface of the roof. for example, it wont do roof areas that face interior courtyards.

Hi Jon! Unfortunately, I cannot really picture what you are seeing. The best way to get help would be to post on our forum (forums.sketchup.com). There you can post your model, or an image and get hundreds of skilled modelers offering help!

There is actually a free plugin that can create hip roofs! It is called 1001 bit tools i believe and it can create more advanced geometry like windows and doors.

+- Lets Build With Sketchup - In a sense that is true and i like to create a lot of things myself too, but i do a lot of rendering and sometimes it is just handy to let a plugin make a roof for example so you can get an idea of how something will look before you put a lot of time into it so drom that point of view i wouldnt call it cheating.

+- Lets Build With Sketchup - thanks for agreeing ;) but by looking at your channel is a good way to verify your point made, you seem to have a lot of skill and great work!

+Max van den Hoven Medeek also has a roof builder plug-in that's a snap to use. More functional that the 1001 bits one but unfortunately is on a one month time trial basis. But then again, it's only $20
