Sketchup Tips - Hand modeling a complex roof.

In this lesson, we cover modeling a variable slope roof with a "flaired" end profile. We use simple edge extrusion and intersection techniques to create and connect the individual roof plans. We then use Tools on Surface to help make our ridge caps.

Out of curiosity, do you increase the cost of the project when you encounter a situation like this or do you just have a set price and this happens from time to time? As I’m fairly new to modeling I’m always mystified how you’re ever supposed to give a client any kind of baseline when stuff like this comes up and they don’t really understand why it’s any different to model than some of their other homes. I work for a builder that tends to do some complex roofs (nowhere near this complex) but varying slopes/pitches, Dutch gables integrated into hips integrated into mansards etc, makes my head spin 😂

I would run screaming away from any house with such a roof. Not just due to the bizarre aesthetics, but for pragmatic reasons (maintenance, increased likelihood of failure, cost of roofing, unnecessary complexity, etc.).

I hear you. I had nothing to do with the architectural design, but was obligated to model the house in 3D printer n order to depict the site design in context. I could have also cheated the roof, but I enjoyed the challenge.

i like the video but its really frustrating that you don't make it clear what plugins youre using. The video doesn't help much if I can't use the same techniques you demonstrated
