Skibbereen Town in the Republic of cork

1798 The year of the French. As a way for the French to attack the English in a backdoor kind of way they landed a few 100s troops & armed the Irish & had officers leading their combined military efforts. That year they kept attacking English garrisons with local know how the length & breadth of the country with much success until finally the game was up. The French surrendered & were treated as POWs & traded back for English POWs in Europe. The captured Irish were not treated so well being seen as ungrateful natives & not proper soldiers. 1798 Martyr's RIP. There is plenty of literature about 1798 & it's very interesting. I hope that explains a little why the statues exist & 98 street. Cheers from Wales.
