AVAA. However, I would push back about a couple things you have said. 1. I think Nett's use of AAVE can be attributed to his proximity to black people. I have been seeing him pop up for the last couple years and the earliest videos I remember of him were him as like a 16 yr old making music vids in his school library with his (black) friends. If he has surrounded himself with black people it makes sense he naturally uses some AAVE, whether or not it is appropriation is another story. Honestly thinking about it I can never remember seeing him with a white man ever. 2. I also think you're discrediting his upbringing. It is hard to find a lot about Nettspend's childhood other than what he has said repeatedly so I have to take him at face value. He did not have the pampered suburban upbringing you imply it appears. He got kicked out of school and had to move to rural VA and it is important to note that when he was kicked out of school was when he "bossed up" on rapping. He only had his first minor hit song after he got kicked out, which indicates he probably was a truly trouble child, not something made up to be a rapper. A lot of the things you said about Future seemed to apply to Nett other than the race parts. 3. I have seen a video of him shooting dice multiple times in the last week. To be fair it was recent so maybe not something hes been doing his whole life, but it is a recent album so hes just rapping about something hes doing. I overall think you might underestimate how bad his childhood might have been and the types of people he has hung around. I could also be overestimating, as there is no definitive right answer only what I've observed. Would love feedback on this if I am wrong as well. Very sad to see a child doing opiates obviously. Love your content and liked the video and the charity aspect is very noble.

honestly feels he's mistaking his middle class privilege for racial privilege. Being surrounded by addiction and having friends in jail is pretty normal in low income communities for white and black kids. and aave is used in a lot of lower income communities that are hispanic and white now too
@keithprice7718
@keithprice7718 Ай бұрын
@@noahsimpson7530 yeah. i mean in one of nett’s most popular songs he literally shouts out a specific friend/contemporary of his (zayguap) who was locked up & is facing three serious felony charges, he has less distance from these things than most would think. frankly, i think that viewing him as less authentic than someone like osamason, who actually did have a relatively stable upbringing, has some troubling implications. perhaps my brain has been poisoned by marxist thought but it really seems like this is one of the cases in which the race element is pretty irrelevant, albeit not totally.

one more thing: the presumptuous comments regarding the diamond teeth lyric especially stuck out to me. you don’t need to wonder whether or not he actually has any, as he JUST did a photoshoot with them in! i mean you can literally see them in his spotify profile picture! i love this channel and i agree with the idea that this record and nettspend’s career embodies a great & uniquely american societal tragedy, but i can’t help but feel like this video was pretty uncharacteristically uncharitable in a myriad of ways.

Something to touch on when you were talking about the post Nettspend made when he was 8 in 2015 is that I think a lot of the commenters are desensitized to it because a lot of Nettspend’s core fan base had the same type of childhood where they had unrestricted access to the internet and also have Instagram accounts of themselves at that age, so to my generation it’s sadly seen as whatever and expected.

yeah even being a bit older than nettspend, I uploaded videos when I had *just* turned 9 years old on KZbin. All of Gen Z has grown up online and it separates us culturally from those who remember a time before this. Even then though, I think there's a legitimate difference to the internet landscape now. The algorithms weren't as good then, and the sites weren't profitable. These sites are built like crack now and that's only happened in the past ~10 years.

This is a good assessment, especially for someone who hasn't been following nettspend's rise, but I do think there's a less fatalistic read on his popularity that's equally interesting. Rap is becoming more and more dominated by image than anything else, and nettspend has probably had the most effective marketing campaign of any underground rapper ever in the past year. Where he was initially trending with people ironically reposting snippets of him performing and dancing to his music by claiming he had "aura" (as an awkward obviously prepubescent white boy), his team managed to flawlessly convert all of his hate into post-ironic enjoyment by PLAYING INTO the joke and amping up the projection of "aura" in his posts, performances, online activity, etc. The joking comments about him being cool became harder to discern as jokes and eventually blended into the actual support for him. Nettspend is an inherently funny rapper and he's utilized meme culture as a superspreader of his image and music instead of doing the old guard thing of responding negatively to hate, its a very progressive and internet-age approach to gaining a real audience. I also think nettspend works as a very effective punk figure in rap where the genre has really struggled to find a "punk" outlet recently. Nettspend is a reaction to the death of hip hop, the expectation that the genre needs these towering figures to create magnum opus records to continue existing. Where artists like Travis Scott and Kanye are failing to make the dent in culture that they used to, nettspend organically took over the world by being explicitly anti-intellectual and making purely hedonic/fun music that isn't concerned with traditional acceptance. Nothing is more punk now than the way tiktok is dissolving the concept of genre and structure in music itself, such that the average nettspend song is < 2 minutes of a series of disconnected vocal stims over a beat and everyone loves it. Regardless of the negative impacts of attention-deficit culture in society, it IS the defining characteristic of culture right now and nettspend is doing a nearly flawless job of representing it. For other artists with similar marketing I'd recommend looking into Joeyy and Sematary

there are tons of rappers who go overlooked at a young age especially poc rappers. for example tay k was 15 when he made a career off rapping about real murder. the netorious serial killer king von was 16. the new drill scene in new york, britain, and toronto have a trend of having young children from these scenes get popular such as DD osama whos whole career started when his 14 year old friend was stabbed to death over gang violence. and as nettspend is the face of suburban unlooked addiction i believe rappers like lil rt and youngkris who are actual children below the age of 12 rapping about guns drugs and cars are the face of this epidemic. this whole industry is sad man😭😭

@Nicksk8forlife Ай бұрын
I honestly didn't think Nettspend was getting this kinda philosophical chatter. Musics pretty good sure, but the general angle you took on the current state of the world inspired me to write a nice long comment. Kudos for the level you understand and are aware of a wide variety of factors affecting the youth today. Some things minority groups face, some things middle class kids face, and some things in todays modern world both aspects of the youth face when there is an overlap in experience (depending on the type of exposure one either puts themself into, or is sometimes forced into). Nett seems to be the latter of the 3. Yet, as much as you are clearly aware of the darkness of our world, be it white supremacist influence in society, addiction in youth, financial inequality etc. it seems you still operate under the philosophy that this world is "working" and there is a "right way" to live within it, the youth just needs to be guided towards "it". Without getting into the plethora of specifics, its not working. And I would argue that the veil is being lifted, at incredible rates, of how preposterous the fundamental ethos of our "civilized" society is. Kids are taught all their life to eventually "grow up" and be "adults", but are constantly blasted with how ironic that entire existence is in and of itself. We live in a world that has progressed so incredibly far, while the majority of people still struggle with the most primitive desires and needs...survival, for absolutely no reason at all. But as long as you act "civilized", you're on the right path to being an ideal citizen. On the flip side, the "well off" aspects of society have been completely stripped void of any meaningful or spiritual value. The majority of people in a middle class society choose to turn a blind eye to the perverted atrocities of the world, and how it operates, because they feel they deserve their peace and quiet, and genuinely think there is a future with the way the world is. They believe they have built the ideal world to live in. A safe one, where all you have to do is follow the rules, be "intelligent", perform the occasional act of kindness, and you'll be "happy". But again the methods for this happiness can only exist if you choose to subscribe to the idea that the world is "functioning", and just needs a bit of "fixing". One that is still completely and utterly enslaved to sick, sad, uninspired regimes. There is little to nothing to do in these "ideal" parts of society because they sustain themselves on odd ideas of sanctity through uninspired hard work. Be safe, be healthy, go to college, get a job you don't care about, make money, have kids, rinse, repeat. There is little real, cultured, inspired, "quality of life". The biggest priority is to get your kid into college, because they are God forsaken if they work any "unskilled job". Getting high is alot more fun than going out for a mediocre dinner at a restaurant that looks as sterile as a hospital. How inspired do you think the employees are at that restaurant preparing your food? Pick your chef - The underpaid undocumented immigrant working 60 hours a week, or the 30 year old with no health insurance, living with 4 roommates who doesn't have enough money to own literally anything but a pack of cigarettes, beat up civic, and 30 rack of beers. Please don't be upset or surprised if the quality of service, or food served, isn't what you thought it would be. Follow the dinner by going to a bullshit 25 dollar movie thats been remade 7 times, that 20 million people are going to support and go watch every month when it comes out again, while snacking on a 20 dollar bag of popcorn. Only to end the night on an argument being scolded for not working hard enough towards your "future". Maybe you can own a restaurant or movie theatre one day! Simultaneously we are living in a world where there is potentially LIMITLESS possibilities for what anyone, especially the youth, could possible do, create, achieve, impact etc. Unfortunately they are bound by some calm idle rule set to follow that stifles the life in them and leaves them genuinely confused, while half the world is utterly burning. It is very dark, but I think the youth simply doesn't give a fuck anymore. I don't think they even know what giving a fuck even really means in todays world. Dying doesn't really represent the loss of much, besides maybe in a poetic way, freedom from the weird confusing society they're forced to operate within. If death comes, so be it, until then they rage or whatever you wanna call it because it's the only thing that actually makes sense for them. Kinda reminds me of that quote that goes something like "Live your life in a way that is so free, that the simple act of your existence becomes an act of protest".

The world isn’t working but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a right and wrong. Look up Kantian Ethics: there is a moral right and wrong that all human beings inherently know and should be upheld within society. The issue is as a society we’re losing sight of it and the bar for morality keeps getting pushed back and back. Honestly that’s why I support religion. Just because society is denigrating doesn’t mean that humanity has to, we just have to build a new and better society

Just to your point of "he doesn't talk like this in real life" Rap is still performative. Jay-Z doesn't talk like he raps. Neither does Eminem. Ozzy doesn't speak like he sings. Or for a modern example Yeat. Now if his use of AAVE is genuine codeswitching or not is up to I guess modern linguists. AAVE has been adopted/bastardized in so many corners of the internet that it's not hard to believe 8 year old with an ipad wouldn't pick up on it as "normal" (See kids in Boston etc saying "cuh" and "Blood" even though they have no clue what it means.) Interesting nonetheless

A child rocketed to popularity because of irony-drenched meme status, then maintaining a genuine core fanbase who can enjoy the music for its novelty without a second thought about negative consequences of childhood stardom. The main difference is that Matt Ox was much younger and seemed to have some level of guidance or parental involvement, not mentioning drugs or sex or even cussing in his lyrics until he turned 18 (just two years ago), whether or not he was engaging in those things outside of music. Nettspend's lean towards the more Lil Peep side, where the addictions are often the explicit lyrical focus of the music, suggest to me that he really isn't lying about any of it to glorify it, that he really has been a problem child with lifelong struggles who has been put in a tricky situation through fame that will likely compound those struggles. When I first learned about Nettspend through the deep irony based "underground rap news" pages like Hyperpopdaily (ask your kids), I laughed along, then I didn't get the music, then I wanted to be annoyed at the teenagers a few years younger than me who DID get the music, then I remembered how I felt at age 15 hearing a 14 year old Matt Ox say "GET MONEYYY YAAHH YAHH" on a song with xxxtentacion, and my first thought was "oh the kids are gonna be alright, that's the same thing I had 7 years ago". Being a teenager at the time and remembering the feeling in the air at school the day that Lil Peep died, the school putting on a drug assembly the week after Juice WRLD died, I hope that there is hope for Nettspend to become a healthy adult.

50:40 there is a lot of references in nettspends music to his older songs. he mentions a lot that he wouldnt do crack and looks down on people that do it (especially in the song, funuyuh) but i dont think its anything to do with race as he grew up around a very diverse neighbourhood. and i mean there is a large difference between coke and crack in terms of long term effects on people

Interested in how meta irony originated from the internet. I'm suspecting it has to do with early forum culture. In a digital space where there's rapid discussion there are undeniable ways to induce attention to a post. Compare meta irony with "ragebaiting", both are performed by deceptively conveying the intended message, made easier by the lack of facial expressions in computer mediated communication. Meta irony was used before the internet and I think the internet turned meta irony into a disruptive communication technique, driven by the necessary behaviors to farm more impressions.

AAVA. Im sure there are many of people who listen and say they like nettspend in the meta ironic way that you explained, but there is a large population of people who genuinely like his music of even just the ambiance of it. I would consider myself a non ironic enjoyed of his music, which is probably my 17 year old white suburban brain enjoying who ever I can relate to the most, but his drug and sex talk especially from a kid my age is something I cannot relate to. I do not aspire to be like him, but my view is that he serves as an outlet to people who look like him but will hopefully never experience the same life as him. I went to his concerts in Chicago every time he's been here and it was an enjoyable experience filled with many different faces who all enjoyed his music just as much as me, but everyone take the lyrics in different ways. I don't even know where I'm going with this comment and I don't want to sound corny but I was just looking to show you a different perspective of his music from someone of his intended audience. Ask me questions for clarification if needed. Merci Prof.

Having just gotten into the video I think I agree with you generally. I think nettspend isn’t as racist as an Ian like character (a white rapper in college/a frat who made a whole different type of music previously and then swapped to a wacka flocka clone with a shitty yeat preset), but I definitely think that nettspend is being used/abused (ex. Him and DJ Phat before they fell out) by the people around him and it is sad to see. AVAA, Love your vids and will give more thoughts further in! Edit 1: About 35 minutes in, first of all I love angry birds Star Wars too lmaoooo. I love your explanation on WHY the lyrics are a sort of blackface and your knowledge is great. Wanna give my own thoughts on this since I’m at a similar age to nettspend, I’ve seen people like him but nettspend seems to be missing a sort of adult look to him. Everyone else who’s been mistreated by the system of life that I’ve seen you can physically tell that they’ve been through something to grow “early.” They’re not an adult but they look the part because they’ve struggled enough that it has taken a toll on them and fastened their maturity. Nett looks younger, and there was a rumor back in October 2023 or so that he’s not even 17, being 15 years old instead based on a little bit of info. You really understand what you’re talking about though and I love your analysis of the content.

Great vid, heard you tease this one in the last video, didn't know anything about Nettspend but I'm glad you're highlighting the parts that matter, there needs to be a line when it comes to artistic expression and opiate propaganda. But! Further to Roblox, the game is pretty beautiful I'll be honest, there are stupid games on there, but there are some very cute, safe, kid friendly cooperative games, there's a lot of heart and warmth in Roblox.

You're old, I'm old, even the fact that the oldest Zoomers are mid 20s technically...time really get us all. Even though as an elder millenial myself who thoght I was somewhat up to date with what the kids were up to until recently in reality I have no idea what's going on post-soundcloud era and this is legit the first time I became aware of this kid and if your assessment is true that this wave of post-irony Gen Z rappers will fully divorce suburban white Americans from anything black American in hip hop/rap then what will happen in the next five years will really be an interesting time in music (tragedy and all). I mean we have already seen what happened with AAVE/black English being labeled as "Gen Z slang".

I’m almost 27 & I heavy fw nettspend. His videos are very artistic & his music just reminds me of being young & just wanting to turn up and skip school with my friends but also the anger and frustration of being young & being forced to grow up. Album was kinda mid but I heavy fw when he gets introspective in his lyrics. One of my favorite nett songs has a line where he says “I used to cut my wrists because I used to feel like a bitch” & I wish we got more of that nettspend on the album over the flexing shit but i can’t even be mad, I was 17 drinking doing molly Adderall & Xanax so I get just not wanting to give a fuck about anything n just wanting to do you & fuck bitches. I just wish rappers could rap about their life & express their feelings more, that’s why carti whole lotta red album was so good because we got to hear carts actual feelings on shit

Avaa, I’m a 23M black male who grew up on the 2016 SoundCloud rap of Xxx, Xavier wolf, etc then went thru the juice wrld, yatchy, Uzi carti pipeline. I haven’t really found any music besides the old (short lived) SoundCloud gen that inspires that same feeling I went to listen to the nettspend Album and It was alright. But he really does remind me of a more polished distorted mix of the X rage songs and Juice wrld with the beautiful melodies type shit But if you’ve been locked in to the underground you would know that juice wrld, trippie etc is the precursor and you can seriously hear it. Like this sounds like an extension of trippies recent albums. This shit is so crazy to see music evolve But yea the subject matter is the exact same and as an Avid jw999 lover I really wanted to be addicted to drugs bc of it, thankfully I’m not. So this doesn’t surprise me someone like netspend was bound to happen
