In A Darkened Room is a power ballad by American rock band Skid Row. The song was released in 1991 as a single from their second album Slave to the Grind, which reached number one on the Billboard 200. The song was written by singer Sebastian Bach, bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave Sabo, and it deals with the theme of child abuse. The lyrics describe the suffering of a victim who is trapped in a darkened room, beyond the reach of God’s faith.
Skid Row was formed in 1986 by Bolan and Sabo, who recruited guitarist Scotti Hill, drummer Rob Affuso and Bach. The band achieved commercial success in the late 80s and early 90s, with hits such as 18 and Life, I Remember You, Youth Gone Wild and Wasted Time. The band’s third album, Subhuman Race (1995), was critically acclaimed, but failed to repeat the success of its predecessors.
Bach and Affuso left the band in 1996, and Skid Row went on a hiatus. The band reformed in 1999, with Johnny Solinger as Bach’s replacement and included various drummers. Solinger recorded two albums and two EPs with the band, before leaving in 2015. He was replaced by Tony Harnell, who left after eight months. ZP Theart became the official singer in 2017, but left in 2022. He was replaced by Erik Grönwall, who debuted in the band’s first studio album in 16 years, The Gang’s All Here, which was released in 2022.
Sebastian Bach is currently touring as a solo artist. He is performing some of Skid Row’s songs from their debut album, which he celebrated the 35th anniversary of in 2022. He has also released a new album called The Gang’s All Here with his current band, which features former members of Guns N’ Roses (Duff McKagan) and Metallica (Ron McGovney).
Did you know that The Slave To The Grind album cover art was painted by Bach’s father, artist David Bierk, who was inspired by a seventeenth-century painting by Caravaggio. Bach still owns the original and said that it had survived a hurricane and two fires.
