I'm 56 years old and I still listen to the original cassetta of this album I bought at the time. Among other things, I saw Skid in Italy on the tour of the same name and Seb shook my hand from under the stage. I couldn't have had a better musical memory than this! ❤️‍🔥🤘

i worked at The Record Plant LA when they recorded Beside Ourselves. Sometime late in '91. The first thing Sebastian said when he walked in the door was, "Where's the buds"? Snake was the only artist to ever give me a tip for getting his food. We did Use your Illusion that same year it was vas a frightening, scary blast. Always saw Slash. He came back to do Blackand White....Those were crazy times. I think everyone here misses them. Thought it would last forever...

Rachel Bolan Interview on May 24, 2011. The question asked was "Is Quicksand Jesus about religious tension or bouts with faith?" Bolan answered: You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I grew up in a Catholic family and so did Snake. You know that good old fashioned Catholic guilt. It’s just about keeping your beliefs during good times and bad times. It’s so easy to not be spiritual when things are going really good and then when they go bad you start relying on whatever god you pray to to get you out of it. It’s kind of saying that whatever it is you believe in, you should probably put in 100% all the time. We started writing it and war broke out in the middle east. The lyrics just started pouring out but we did not have a title for it. Snake and I used to do a lot of dirt bike riding and we knew we wanted “Jesus” in the title but we could never really settle on anything. There was a busted Jesus in Snakes mom’s flower garden. The garden was there right before we took off to go riding on the trail and every time it rained the Jesus sank. We called it “Quicksand Jesus” and what we would do is touch it for luck and then we would take off. If someone would wreck we’d say, “You forgot to touch Quicksand Jesus didn’t you?” One day, we just looked at each other and said, “That’s it! That’s the song title!” That song was a labor of love. Snake and I never had such a tug of war on certain parts and elements of songs as much as we did with that one. That one took us a long time to write. It’s cool that’s your favorite song because that’s my favorite Skid Row song that we ever did. I’m proud of it and I’m so glad we still do that one.

You can most definitely tell it comes from Catholic theology. They pose the question, are we saved by the words of bastard saints, do we live in fear or faith. I'm glad you shared this. This is definitely one of my favorite SR song's. Sadly many people fall away because of Man- made Religion. They throw the baby out with the bathwater. When I was a young boy back then I simply didn’t care about Skid Row , I was more into Metallica, Testament, Slayer, Megadeth and other thrash metal bands. Thought that these guys where simply hard rock , but with time I came to learn that they played on a very thin line between that hard rock and heavy metal and yes , I now understand them and I apologize for my younger thoughts on them ! This turned out to be one of my favorite songs due to it’s very unique composition and song structure . Love it , and sometimes i play it on repeat just to hear Bach’s voice .

Clearly d most underrated Hair metal band; Skid Row. Powerful messages in most song esp Slave to the Grind album. Genius Dave Sabo, Rachel Bolan is behind those genius masterpiece. Loved them since d first album. Baz is def one of the best vocalists in dat era. Baz n Skid Row lives with me, only memories left.

She caught the melting sky It burned but still the winter passes by and by To the other side A slow parade of wind That blows through trees That wilted with the season's children Are we saved by the words of bastard saints? Do we live in fear or faith? Tell me now who's behind the rain A maze of tangled grace The symptoms of for real Are crumbling from embrace But still we chase The shadows of belief And new religion clouds our visions of the roots Of our souls Are we ashamed of our own fate? Or play the fool for our own sake? Tell me who's behind the rain What do we need? Where do we go? When we get where we don't know Why should we doubt the virgin white of fallen snow? When faith's our shelter from the cold What do we need? Where do we go? When we get where we don't know Why should we doubt the virgin white of fallen snow?
