When I was about 14, I skidded logs with a tractor while my Grampa used a team of mules. We loaded those logs, rolling up and on the trailer with a loop of chain. Then I pulled that trailer to a temporary sawmill down the road a ways. This was about 1964, US60 project, Dudley, Mo.

My grandpa did this his entire life. Him and his friend had two horses, Doc and Dan, and a log truck just like that one. They worked alot out in Bankhead forest in Winston county, Alabama. I worked with them in the summer time. When I was a teenager they would let me "operate" the horses. Lol. Those horses were way smarter than me and all I did really is hook and unhook the logs and say "get up". They did the rest. His buddy's name was RipCord. Not really sure what his real name was but I ask him why "RipCord"? He was a paratrooper in WW2 with the 101st Airborne. He was a very small man but papaw always told me that he was tougher than woodpecker lips.

I have used a self loader but I have been on top of loads several times to straighten out logs. Lord this brings back memories of me and my dad logging.

Wish I still had mine had a f 700 tandam axle log truck with side loader most young people wouldn't know how to use one now days
