In this informative KZbin video, we dive into various aspects of managing and nurturing our forest land.
Watch as we tackle the task of skidding and cleaning up the last of the valuable Western Red Cedar trees on our property. Witness the effort and care taken to utilize and preserve these magnificent trees sustainably.
Discover the progress we've made in reforestation efforts as we proudly share our accomplishment of planting over 8000 trees this spring. We take you on a journey through the newly planted areas, showcasing the growth and development of the trees we planted last year.
However, not everything is without its challenges. We address the ongoing issue of deer eating our new Western Red Cedar seedlings and share our strategies and techniques to mitigate the impact on their survival.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a fellow landowner, or simply interested in sustainable forestry practices, this forest update video offers valuable insights and firsthand experiences. Gain inspiration, knowledge, and appreciation for the delicate balance of managing a forest ecosystem.

Jason, Some of the comments below sound interesting, especially the human hair ones. If they get wet they'll probably stick in place! I don't know anything about logging, but you have some really knowledgeable followers who know how hard you work! Cheers, Rik Spector

Jason! I feel you in so many levels with what you are doing. Have you ever thought about planting Osage Orange? It is where I’m going with what I’m doing - that and Locust, between predation and pest, seems these are the best species. I will continue eastern cedar (I am east coast), but those are my go to species for all my work now.

tree tubes. it was the only way I could get some plantings to grow. had to allow the plant to reach a height where the deer cannot nip the tops off. Then I had a problem with voles/moles chewing the saplings inside the tubes. round and round it goes.

Cage your trees till 3 to 4ft goats for grass blackberries etc they fertilize and clear wonderfully milk or meat from goats you do need to protect your trees from them till large enough to with stand grasing

Your comment is so hard to read without any punctuation. If I understand you correctly, you advise having goats in to clear the land, as they're very good at it, and as a bonus they produce meat and milk. However, you must protect the trees from grazing until they're 3 to 4 feet tall.

Washington question- when logging your own property do you have to replant if there are already little seedlings that are coming up on their own? I'm planning on logging my own this year in NE Washington.

#Jason Have you ever seen the 12 ga shoot gun primers that you use in a deer , Bear , Elk to keep them away from you land You use a heavy fishing line it hooks to a trip alarms perimeter 12 gauge. you run the fishing line around your land an hook this up when a dear elk any big animal will trip on the fishing line an it well scare them off . then when your trees are bigger you take all the line down an the animals well come back. Just a idea to same your trees. Amazon cares them an other places on the internet .

Wildlife is hard on new trees. Most new tree plantings here in Denmark are fenced in for the first couple of years (which cost an arm and a leg, but so does new trees 🙂 ) due to high deer pressure. A cheaper option, and yes, this will sound completely bonkers: get a bag of hair from a hairdresser, and sprinkle a small handful of hair on the new trees. The smell of human deters most of the critters here from destroying the new trees.

Critters can be a challenge. We used to use a quarter sheet of write-in-the-rain paper, rolled into a cylinder and stapled onto the leader. After the bud grows you can pull it up to cover the leader. I have used vexar and blue plastic tubes with stakes. They also make a soft tube that covers the leader that doesn't need a stake. Good luck.

Hi Jason, Happy to see that at least some of your hard work is paying off! Always nice to get a Cedar surprise in the form of unknown logs! How's your other tree farm doing that you planted a few months ago ?? Thumbs up! Stay safe. Jim

I have tried to plant maples on my place in Nebraska. I have not had any last more than 24 hours because of the deer. My fruit trees get 6 foot cages. The deer get 180 grains at 2900 feet per second in the fall.

THE ANTI DEER SPRAYS WORK WELL BUT THEY NEED TO BE APPLIED DURING DRY WEATHER AND REPEAT TREATMENTS ARE NECESARY. USE THE ROUND UP TO KILL GRASS AROUND THE BASE OF THE TREES BUT CAREFULL OF OVERSPRAY
