He’s not failing at all. The skier is terrified and in fear of being attacked, which is why he won’t dare move a muscle and tries hard to make calming noises. God only knows how this ended, or if the lad even survived this encounter.

Yes, that's during mating season and is part of the mating display, BUT the grouse cock wants to fight the skier. That wouldn't occur at night because the wood grouse is diurnal.
