I "learned" how to ski relatively late in life. It was also the first time I'd seen or was exposed to snow. I was 33 years old. I still suck at it, but I was smitten, and I have to admit (this despite the fact that I have another musical life-long avocation which is embedded in my fiber) I love it more than anything I do, and have been chasing that "first-time feeling" ever since. That said, skiing is a counter-intuitive sport. Your natural instinct is to "lean back" towards the hill when faced with an incline. Skiing demands you do the opposite.

Yep agreed... Instincts are evil:) in skiing at least.

Every move in skiing is exactly the opposite of what comes naturally and what you need to do to allow your skis to turn, slow you down and stop you.

These are the two hardest things for skiers to overcome. 1. Finding correct ski teaching. The world's instructors tell you what skiing looks and feels like while using complicated and meaningless words instead of how to position your upper body and change your weight and balance to allow the skis to turn and make you look and feel like that. That's not teaching, it's Show with no Tell. 2. Having the "Time" to practice Balancing and Moving on one foot after the other which is what ski need from you. A good way to get that experience is right at home on roller or inline skates. Balancing while moving! Then you can have an unlimited amount of practice. Yes, the moves and feelings are exactly like skiing.

By the way, that thing about leaning back vs. leaning into the mountain, that is the most difficult thing about skiing - for me at least. I love the mountains...

You don't want to think about leaning back or into the mountain. You want to think about balancing on the arch of your downhill foot and then facing and leaning down the hill as you change your weight and balance to the uphill ski to allow that ski to make the turn. Those thoughts and movements will put you where your skis need you to be. All the other stuff that happens are byproducts, not what you need to focus on.

It's a sad day indeed when we have to resort to skiing digitally... but we'll all be sliding again before we know it.
