Agree with you. Didn’t think I’d like it as much after buying one two yrs ago. Awesome conditions here in the west as opposed to milder winters they get back east with sloppy , wet , deep snow. You can fly with studded tires in the right conditions. Makes a long winter shorter…. Especially when you make $36 an hr and still can’t afford to ski

@jackpittens796
@jackpittens796 2 жыл бұрын
At my local favourite trails in Ontario, HAFTA, the speeds in winter can be much faster than in the summer since the snow buries all the technical rocks and stuff and smooths it all out. Then again, after a fresh dump of snow, things can go pretty slow and be challenging. I was down to 1 psi tire pressure last night trying to find just a bit of traction. Every winter ride is different, so it keeps it interesting.

On packed trails, all you need is 2.5-2.6 tires. Just got back from a ride and had a blast on my normal bike. People look at me in disbelief, but the grip and braking control are much better than you’d expect. I passed skiers going both up and down today.🤣
@mrvwbug4423
@mrvwbug4423 2 жыл бұрын
Try that on most fatbike trails and you're going to piss off a lot of people, it's groomed to be just a hair softer than super packed in snow so that fatbike tires and snowshoes can dig in and get grip, you will rut that same trail out on standard tires. Shallow packed snow is definitely grippy on normal tires, still get plenty of that riding lower elevation trails with snow in the shadows
@kailmarks4968
@kailmarks4968 2 жыл бұрын
The only groomed for fat bike trails we have are flat, boring trails around ponds and streams. No thanks. I’m talking about regular trails that you’d normally ride in the summer. They get so much foot and ski traffic, they’re packed hard. No problem on a normal bike; you can barely tell I’ve been there.

I am confused. Is that trail cleared, or pushed down, or someone rode it on a snowboard? Or does that well you ride in occur naturally with the snow? Maybe just enough people riding it even during the winter? Seriously, it looks like a consistent width that was man-made.... weird .... We used to ride during the winter back in Europe in the late 90s ... and it is a lot of fun (or a pain in the arse at times) .... No snow in Costa Rica now .... I think I kind of prefer that ...

They might use a rokon to pack the fat one trails out there I’m not quite sure
@Chubacca838
@Chubacca838 2 жыл бұрын
The trails are definitely groomed somehow. It's a very narrow path so a snowmobile is out of the question. Perhaps the Rokon like Calgary mentionned. Where I used to work we had wider trails so we used a fat-track snowmobile with an attachment in the back on which we added weights. Groomed at night when the moisture in the air would drop onto the snow so it'd pack nice and hard.

@@ddangerousddave cool that this exists and that they do this. Here in Costa Rica there is no public trail system. You cannot ride national parks. It is either bad/abandoned roads (that become trails), or bike parks, with mostly no shuttle...... I usually go for bike parks, there is a variety of natural trails and groomed/shaped berms/jumps too. So it's good. There are some odd trails here and there, but you end up sharing it with horses, atvs and some hardcore offroaders in lifted trucks. I remember good old Europe, where we had public trails everywhere..... but nothing like that with winter grooming :) .. that is some extreme love for your citizens I haven't experienced anywhere yet :)

@@ddangerousddave That said... I don't whine, a bike park opened 8km (15 min) from my house, so I can put a lap in even on weekdays - before work ... or more if I take the ebike :) ... But yeah .. that trail grooming is mega cool. I remember riding powder snow in Europe. Super dangerous as you have no idea what's under that ... branch, rock, hole, ice, zombies ... anything ...

Hey Dave what shoes do you wear to fatbike?
@ddangerousddave
@ddangerousddave 2 жыл бұрын
I wear my regular riding shoes (5ten freerider pro shoes) with wool socks whenever possible, but when it gets really cold, I have some insulated winter hiking boots. It sucks because they're bulky and you get zero pedal feel, but when it's -20c, then you need it. The winter boots are also helpful because they have more substantial tread on the bottom for when you're pushing up a slippery slope.

This is 100x sketchier than 99% of people watching this think it is. Every corner is terrifying. You can't brake. You slide everywhere. You're always worried you're going to slip and slam into a tree. But by far, what I hate the most (and why Dangerous Dave is so good at it) is that you feel like you're riding an endless 2-foot-wide bridge. If your tire goes off the little snow path and catches the powder, you come to a stop real quick. Concentration is at an all-time high, all the time.
@I_THE_ME
@I_THE_ME Жыл бұрын
You can absolutely brake, especially since the trail is packed snow. Packed snow can be very grippy especially when the temperature is just few degrees below freezing. If there is ice on the trails then studded tires will provide good amounts of grip. Only situation where there is zero grip is when an icy trail is covered in fresh snow.
@YFZriderdude15
@YFZriderdude15 Жыл бұрын
@@I_THE_ME Any time I have been biking on my plus-tire bike with studs it's absolutely terrifying. No condition of the snow makes it grippy and I slide every time I make a corner at high speed! I just don't have the grip I do in the summer and downhill riding becomes butthole-clenching and downright scary. What this guy is doing in the video is nothing short of a miracle. PS it is worth noting that I also have a true fat bike (not just plus) with 4 inch tires and that admittedly makes riding a little more fun. The winter temperatures are also rarely right around freezing; 90% of winter in Alaska is in the teens and below (farenheit). I don't know how that affects traction. Snowmachining is a much better winter sport up here anyway. Though I guess if you live in BC with tons of people and no riding areas.. not so much.
