Ok I made another comment where I got it completely wrong, I think the 748 designation for the Sherman (and the 754 for the KV2) is just it's ordnance designation number, a panzer 4 for example was known as an Sd.Kfz 161. They used different ranges of numbers for different types of vehicles so the 700 range must have been beutepanzer
