M46 Patton After the Buff: OP or Still Mediocre?

This tank is held back mainly by its 2015 balanced pen.... back when tanks had serious weakspots the low pen was... still low but it was serviceable.

Mad respect to the arty in the third game who went to hunt down and knife fight the enemy arty to end the match. Never seen an arty show initiative and courage like that in my games.

as I mentioned in the last video about M46 - if the tank has lower gold pen, than Leo PTA/Centurion 7/1/Char/Standard B/ kunze/ cobra / ... standard pen - then something crucial is wrong. It was a nice showcase against a Type5 heavy. If you're playing against tanks with better armor, you'd suffer so much more with M46 than with almost any other tier9 medium tank. Half of other meds has 330 heat pen, you got 265??? Why? Does it have a pref MM? No tier X? No! Plus the gun handling sucks, although I'd say AP gun handling is definitely better than before, where there was a big difference between gold and standard gun handling. It's not a BAD tank, but penetration is killing it in many many games.

330 heat pene is total nonsence, why is gold munition so strong that you can shoot everywhere and penetrate. i wouldn't mind if wg make nerf for every tank that gold would be around 280 and you would have to aim for weakspots and not just auto pen everywhere

The Centurion 7/1 doesn't have a real gold round however, just a HESH shell that has much less pen than the standard round, which means that if you encounter a heavily armored target that you can't pen with the AP round that you can't flank, all you're going to be doing with your gold round is about 50 damage due to the HESH not penetrating. In that regard I don't think the Patton's ammo selection is any worse or better than the Centurion's. If you're in either vehicle and you come across something like a Type 5 or a Maus you're in big trouble because in both tanks you'll be stuck working with a useless gold round. Both vehicles have crap gold rounds, the 7/1 just has one that can be effective if you're facing lightly armored targets.

The American medium line was one of the first lines I went up when I started playing ten years ago. I loved the line itself, especially the Pershing, but the M46 never clicked and my win rate was 10% lower in the M46 (46%) vs the Pershing (56%). I had friends who loved their M46's and always wanted to play together, so I spent the "gold" and bought some premium rounds to not hinder my platoon. Once I got the T10 Patton, I never played the M46 again.

if they buff the penetration at least at the 240ish range standard ammo 300ish gold ammo and little bit of the gun handling and the dpm this tank will be relevant in 2024, basically take the gun of patton the tank and keep the gun handling of the M46 or improve it a little bit.

the bad pen and still not ideal accuracy of this tank make this vehicle struggle to realize the DPM. E50 got bad pen as well but in my opinion gunhandling is superior, u are faster, have better armor and can have fun with ramming. Adjusting accuracy and rate of fire is a lazy way to buff a vehicle WG seems to have no clue what place in the game it can fit in

I was super excited for the Patton to be good after the patch, but it's just disappointing. Camo, speed, and armor are just too poor for it to also have mediocre gun handling and penetration.

Weird that the M46 got buffed. It was my easiest 3 MoE. And I never fire any gold. Buff wasn't really needed in my opinion! Yes, 218 pen is pretty bad, but the DPM balances that out.

It's still a weaker tier 9. The ACPR rounds should be the standard, gold AP with slightly more pen. I found the gun was still the weakest link, it could also do with +5 top speed.

Patton gold is way worse than Cent 7/1 standard because it has much worse penetration drop off over range. It’s nowhere near your tier 10 105mm standard APCR

The Patton's gold was always going to have worse drop off than the Centurion's standard round, since it's an APCR round and APCR rounds always lose velocity faster than AP rounds. Likewise, the reason the Patton's APCR round appears to lose penetration faster than other Tier IX APCR rounds is because it has a lower base penetration to begin with.

⁠​⁠@@DovahFett no, Cent 7/1’s 105mm standard is also APCR, but it only has 10mm pen drop off at 500m, while the Patton has 44mm. And the base pen isn’t a factor here. 268mm and 265mm are practically the same, and having an even lower base pen than 265mm doesn’t mean that the drop off is worse than Patton gold. The original tier 9 AMX 30 prototype has 260 APCR standard and 320 HEAT, and it’s APCR drop off is the same as the Cent at 10mm. I’m highlighting this because somehow there’s a myth in the community that if you spam gold in the tier 9 Patton and E-50, you’ll perform similarly to a tier 10 shooting standard APCR, and better than sth like a Cent 7/1 or Leo PTA because you have better DPM.

It used to have true tier 10 pen before WG nerfed its pen and accuracy, and buffed its DPM a few years ago to make it less similar to the Leopard line.

M46 Patton didn't need any of the changes that it got last update. It only needed buffs to the ammo, e.g.: AP: 218 mm → 240 mm (pen) 914 m/s → 1050 m/s (shell velocity) APCR: 260 mm → 290 mm 1150 or sth m/s → 1300 m/s Done - the tank is competitive in 2024

I personally feel it's in a good place. the turret mobility is excellent, can bounce fairly well and the gun handling is very reliable. Low pen is kind of neutralised because of that in my opinion.
