Us trades men are so spoilt for tools! Makes me appreciate how hard construction must have been back in the day. No more time consuming lathe and plaster, no more back breaking butler sinks and cast iron baths, no more lead piping and cast iron pipework etc etc. And i often wonder how noisy builds used to be with everything being hammered together with massive nails. I love my tools almost as much as my children!

Well done

A project manager working on commercial refurbs agrees with you. Taping and jointing can be more labour intensive, and all that dust !!! A good spreader can do hundreds of square metres of skim in a day, and as you say, it is more durable to light knocks, etc. Decorators prefer it too !

@FiscalWoofer
@FiscalWoofer 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve done both many times, around higher traffic walls plater will wear better, but on ceiling it’s why not. For me it’s all about the substrate. If substrate moves you’ll get hairline in either plaster or tape and joint. In real world I find clients want to redecorate rather than wipe down walls down any way so can fill the odd nick in either then anyway. Mate is doing a massive hotel in Heathrow - all tape n joint on metal studs. Interesting stuff

Really interesting to see that. Years ago I plastered my loft conversion and several large ceiling throughout my house. Although it was bloody hard work. Neck and shoulders killing me etc. The job looked amazing when finished. Recently here in Aus' I decided to try the tape and fill. Same as US its 99% done that way here. However I have yet to see a job where you cant notice a board joint somewhere especially on a ceiling. I hope this job is an exception to what I have seen.

Hi Colin It seems to be a regional thing in the U.K. In Scotland, for example. taping and jointing is popular but elsewhere it is board skimming. The big house builders user tapers but there are few, if any, who are anywhere near this guy's standard. I always think that any process that is so dependent on perfect execution is better not used by big builders. If you mess this up it takes a lot to put it right.

Ross, clearly you’ve not worked with some of the house builder contractors I’ve worked with up and down the UK. They’re forced to work at speed, not to a quality and until the site managers change their dials towards quality that’s the way it will stay.

@Solidsnake0208

I did some consulting work for a company doing modular buildings, they taped and jointed to save weight when lifting the modules. It regularly got snagged by clients as the light would catch the lines of jointing compound even after they’d been sanded and painted. Decorators would try and sand it to get it more flush and it would scratch the paper of the plasterboard either side of the joint. It’s a horrible method in my experience and should only be used if you have no other choice. Multifinish every time for me

@FatterTony
@FatterTony 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. This finish is considered 'office' grade. If you look at the US where it's used everywhere, they have 5 levels, level 5 being the highest standard and most expensive. anything less means the paint finish shows the difference between the filled joints and painted PB paper at certain light angles. Our skimmed multi finish walls start at level 5..... (unless a muppet is plastering of course) This method also adds a massive amount of dust to the job, even with 'good' extraction.
@amateurvegan2636
@amateurvegan2636 4 жыл бұрын
Fat Tony The level 5 finish involves rolling filler on and flattening with a spat. Trust the Americans to over complicate something with fancy technical sounding terminology. Float and set over tac and fill any day. Dry lining can give you flatter more uniform walls depending on how well the walls are dabbed. You just can’t beat plaster though

@FatterTony
@FatterTony 4 жыл бұрын
@@dean8170 A primer is to aid adhesion..... my 3 year old's water colours will stick just fine lol. It's the different substrate, painting sanded joint filler with a medium pile roller will be smoother than painting paper with the same roller, end of. Look into US standards, if you want the finish of a painted skim coat, you pay top dollar over there. My customers are a lot happier with their walls than yours are, don't argue it if you haven't seen it first hand, if you had seen it in person then you wouldn't be arguing in the first place. The project is a great display of excellent craftsmanship but it doesn't mean painting paper in the same coat as filler will give satisfactory results. Perhaps it will take 2 coats of trade emulsion, full 100% 240 grit sanding then one final coat? That would maybe sort it but a lot more work than the same finish on a skimmed wall.

@johnmackay7789
@johnmackay7789 4 жыл бұрын
@@buaan either way if the prep is good then both finishes should be good after painting, but I suppose it will always boil down to the plasterer him or herself. I just don't see the point in the extra work in a plaster finish when the plasterboard itself is more than acceptable. That and the time waiting for it to be dry enough to paint. Although plasterboard lathe has been used in the past to replace timber lathe for a plaster finish, to me plasterboard was to replace plastering. I may be wrong. One benefit of a plaster finish is that the internal and external corners tend to be more square than taping so it can be better for fitting skirtings. Providing of course the plasterer hasn't left big snots of plaster at floor level.👍

Hi James, I have lots of jobs plastered but I never intended to plaster this house, I wanted a cleaner process as we have so much glass and frames to protect!!! I also did not want to introduce all that moisture!!! My Taper Kevin did a great job too

They all do this in America and seem to get a brilliant finish, maybe plastering will be a thing of the past in years to come

I live in a tape and jointed house, it’s about 3 years old and is starting to show damage, corners failing, every time I bump a wall it goes through to the plasterboard etc. Maybe it was done by a shit taper because I know that a decent tape and joint will look better than an average skim, hoping robin enlightens is to his decision process!

New builds are done by the splash and dash brigade, they might have the skills to match the Maestro here but they'll have been working down to a price, not up to a standard.

baldy is 100% correct on sites you are on a very tight price and people like to just get in and out. there dose not seam to be any pride in work with house bashing. the only benefit is you have house after house

There is No doubt this guy is as good as they get at tape n jointing, hes an expert and it shows but.. Personally as a 2nd to none quality spread I prefer plastering whole walls and get that "perfect finish" my finish is 100% better than any tape and joiner could ever achieve and flatter too. NO matter who joints or how good I can spot flaws.

Every one will have opinions on what is best and he has done a good job,all I can see is the time!! A good plasterer would have had that room skimmed out in two days done finished one application not having to revisit five times.
