We're doing a major renovation, removing load bearing walls from a 185 year old 5 storey house, steels in, 2 large basements, fit out everything from scratch and I'm planning to do most of it myself. Although only just finishing groundworks and structure, your vids have been hugely helpful so far. I'm learning on the job. Things like this are a life saver. Can't stand poorly made products so getting detailed product reviews and install videos is an absolute god send. Thank you so much for this free content, I don't know where I'd be without it.

Thanks Mat. We are always interested in projects so send pictures to our website and we might even be able to do a couple of videos and tools tests with you. Let us know what you are up to and we will try and get involved.

Hi Roger, I couldn't work out how to send pics to your website, but I've just put together this gallery: goo.gl/photos/GBGVAoVSPHt8NyPW7 - we have space, parking, and bacon butties... would be delighted to be used as a venue for filming etc. We've been planning / building for over 3 years already and as you can see, have barely even started first fix!

Hi Roger, love your videos. Im having a problem with my abacus toilet. Its been leaking (for a long time) from the cistern, running down behind the plasterboard. You did not comment on the height of the pan. I am looking to instal a wall hung pan somewhat higher than the norm to accomodate older and more disabled users. Will this mean that the 1M marking will need to be higher and can the Abacus frame accomodate this? Love your videos

Just set the frame on a timber sole plate. The frame will adjust but it is easier to pack it on a bit of 4 x 2

dot and dab the Elements board with cement based tile adhesive of board adhesive Fixing to Thermalits. Best to use the special lightweight block fixings and a timber bearer to spread the load. I would also put some gun adhesive along the back of the timber bearere

Is there any video where you fit the abacus straight pan connector?
@SkillBuilder2 жыл бұрын
I don't recall a video but I have done it many times. You just have to cut the hole in the wall and push the soil pipe through. I always run from the pan to the stack rather than trying to run the pipe the other way. It just allows things to line up a bit better.

Hi. Are wall hung toilets noisier for adjoining rooms than standard toilets? And what is the most cost effective solution to mitigate the noise transfer? I would rather put that in when at the build rather than later when the kids won't stop complaining :)
@SkillBuilder3 жыл бұрын
If a w.c cistern is in the wall then it only has one layer of plasterboard between it and the room next door but often the pre wall is built in front of the wall so you still have the wall. You can place some Rockwool sound slab behind the cistern but they are sound deadened and the float valve is quiet. One thing you can get it is a little donk sound when it finishes filling. Just slow the flow down with the valve and it makes it quieter. The good news is that having a wall hung pan reduces that noise you often hear downstairs when a man is taking a piss.

My wall is only 0.83 meters (above the windows), is not suitable for installation of wall-hung wc & basin??
@SkillBuilder8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary you need 0.82 plus a bit of shelf on top of the frame so that will take you up to 0.85. If you can run the shelf into the window and not encroach too much on the frame you might just do it.

I just wonder what is behind dry wall? Did you install it directly on dry wall? Will it hold? Cause i have to install it too, but i have wall made of dry wall only.
@SkillBuilder5 жыл бұрын
You need to use a proper stud or masonry wall. The wall you have is no good for this job. If the frame can't be secured you need to use a w.c that sits on the floor.

What are the main differences between British plumbing and continental plumbing?
@SkillBuilder8 жыл бұрын
sizes of pipes. Almost ever size is a little bit different and you have to find adaptors.
@prenticedarlington27208 жыл бұрын
In France: Copper pipe sizes are typically: 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 22, 28mm etc. The thinner sizes can be bought soft in rolls but more commonly, straight tubes are used, which are semi hard and require annealing before bending. The solder fittings do not come with the pre-soldered ring, so solder has to be used and fed from the join between fitting and pipe. Copper pipe wall fixings are different too, using metal brackets that use dedicated screws and standoffs (they look a bit old fashioned, to say the least). PVC waste pipe is measured on the outside diameter, and the wall thickness is typically 3mm. The sizes are 32mm (washbasin), 40mm (shower/sink/bath), sometimes 50mm, 63mm, 80mm, 100mm and 125mm. The 32mm pipe, for example, is only 26mm internal diameter, which makes it significantly smaller than the equivalent British size. Never had a problem, though.
@chrisridesbicycles8 жыл бұрын
Prentice Darlington The French system sounds similar to the German system but of course we use other diameters again. (40/50/75/110). I think washbasin, shower, sink and bath are all the same diameter. Crazy stuff this plumbings. Imagine if computers would be like that. UK 1/2" USB plugs vs. continental 13mm USB plugs. ;)
@prenticedarlington27208 жыл бұрын
Very true, my friend. I guess you must really have been wondering about the British system. The copper and plastic waste pipes are based in inches. The copper pipe is half inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch internal diameter, which equates to 15, 22 and 28mm outside diameters. I think the 22 might sometimes be 21mm but I'm not a British plumber.

The fact it comes with a rear outlet won me over. I'm fitting "continental" brand back to wall and had to make my own rear outlet fitting. F-ing pain in the arse. But putting a false wall 200+mm from the wall in the small UK house is not really an option for a lot of people.
@SkillBuilder8 жыл бұрын
You can get a very slimline frame from Abacus to get you much closer to the wall if the soil pipe is going straight through the wall. I understand that hesitation to lose space and later in the series we show the Abacus flush mounted cabinets which utilise it. The streamlined look of the false wall also makes it look less cluttered, Customers seem to prefer it.
@logik100.08 жыл бұрын
I went the Abus site and found the slim line. Well next one I install..... My current installation is tight to the extreme in my loft conversion. I had to add the missing insulation where I placed the frame to the outside! I have to say thought that its a very well thought out system.
@SkillBuilder8 жыл бұрын
sound like the sort of job I get landed with, next to impossible. I have put cisterns in the roof space above and run a pneumatic flush up through the cavity. Works well though. If you were sitting on the loo when you flushed it you would get a bidet wash out.

I have followed the video fitting instruction but the abs plastic bracket that fixes to the unistrut has flex in it, this makes the frame move when you sit on the toilet, (I am only 78 kgs) and has resulted in the tiling cracking. It looks like I will have to break it out and put a conventional pan in.
@SkillBuilder3 жыл бұрын
I am really sorry to hear that Darren. I usually give the frame a good old tug to make sure there is zero movement. A 78 kg person should not bend anything. Did you put coach screws in the sides of the frame into the studwork? I have never had a frame flex on those brackets if the feet are bolted down and the sides are fixed to the studwork and the studwork is solid there should be no movement. I would not abandon the installation because it is perfectly possible to make sure it doesn't move.
@darrensmith80323 жыл бұрын
@@SkillBuilder Thanks for the advice, I initially used screws in the sides but have managed to coach screw this now and it seems to have worked.
