Spray render, commonly known as spray-on render, is an advanced wall-finishing technique that has transformed the traditional rendering process. Instead of manually applying render mixtures with tools like trowels, spray render involves using specialized machinery to spray the mixture onto walls. This technique can be used internally and externally and is suitable for many surfaces, including brick, block, and concrete.
The primary advantage of spray-on render is efficiency. Manual rendering is labour-intensive and time-consuming, requiring skilled labour to achieve a uniform finish. In contrast, spray rendering offers faster application, covering large areas in a fraction of the time. This speed does not compromise on quality; the finish achieved with spray rendering is often smoother and more consistent than its hand-applied counterpart.
The consistency of the mixture is vital. The render is mixed to a specific consistency suitable for spraying, ensuring it adheres properly to the surface while reducing the potential for air pockets or imperfections.
This uniform application aids in providing better insulation and waterproofing properties. Additionally, because the machinery regulates the mixture's pressure and flow, the likelihood of waste is significantly reduced, making the process more cost-effective in larger projects.
Furthermore, spray rendering can be more adaptable regarding finish and texture. Various finishes can be achieved depending on the chosen mixture and machine settings, from smooth and flat to textured and patterned. This gives architects and homeowners greater flexibility in design choices.
Spray render is a modern advancement in the construction industry, offering speed, efficiency, and versatility. As technology evolves, techniques like spray rendering pave the way for streamlined construction processes, ensuring cost-effective, high-quality results.

We have old rendering that now needs a face lift. It's old but mostly sound with a few very small blown areas. I think it may even be pebble dash that's been painted. I'm on expert at this, sorry 😂. We want to have smooth render. My question is do you think we have to remove what's there back to brick first or could we render over the top of what's there assuming it's still holding up nicely? I have no idea of the age of what's there now but the property it 1930s so it's probably well old. We've been quoted to have the old removed and to have new render and the price blew our socks off to be fair. We only have a tiny one bedroom detached bungalow. Thanks Roger.
@Happytruth
@Happytruth Жыл бұрын
You’ve answered your own question, when you said you had areas that were blown it means you’re likely to have other areas also blow in time so why spend money putting something that won’t last over the top. You need it all stripping off and doing properly, going over anything you don’t know the history of is bodging pure and simple.

What happened to Cullamix ? - used it in a Tyrolean hand cranked bucket that flicked the stuff onto the wall, and promptly took all the skin of your winding hand. Total cost about £15 ( it was 40 years ago ) a bit less than the gear you're using now , and less of a pain to clean up.

It will always be dubious spraying or applying anything onto a substrate you know little about or how long it’s been on, fine if you are doing the whole job base coat and the works from scratch but if not you could have issues. Looks messy and masses of sheeting down, it wouldn’t be so easy cleaning up if it had been pissing down with rain just like any rendering system.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder Жыл бұрын
Don't do it in the rain.
@Happytruth
@Happytruth Жыл бұрын
@@SkillBuilder you don’t need to do it in the rain because whatever the forecast says and because you live on an island like the uk you’ll always get rain and get caught out by the rain. If you’ve got material laying on scaffold boards or on plastic sheeting you’re in for a mess when it gets wet, no matter how many times you check the weather in the uk you’ll always get days when you’re caught out applying any kind of external finish.

This is most comon way of exterior finish in Europe. So with experience I can tell you this is not good. This is building protection and like that you need to apply it carefully and when you pass one square meter or two you need to come back and open it. This is not good. I've seen this trials all around and they failed. Trowel and be fast. One more thing. You nee to be careful it's not to hot or windy. But weather in UK is perfect. We use to know get up early and start at 5am before get hot. At least in UK you don't have this problem.
@SkillBuilder

We have been using this material in the U.K for a long time and if you watch the video you will see we did go back over it. The point about heat and wind was made. Maybe it is hard for you to follow our funny English but we are all over this and it won't fail. We have hundreds of examples of this in the U.K. EWI would not be in business if the products didn't work.

@@SkillBuilder I expect this from you. I gave you some advices in the past but you didn't accept. You think that foreign people doesn't know nothing about construction in the UK. Mate I'm working last there years all around England and I can tell you that you're 20 years behind Europe. I'm using wago for 20 years in one East European country. Press fittings for 15... So... You shouldn't take this like bad comment, you should take this like advice and another opinion. Thank you for your comment. I'll try to improve my English.
