It counts as a basic attack easiest way to tell: It can literally proc thornmail and Jax dodges it. most hilarious thing is, E is not basic attacks, it cannot proc thornmail and Jax cannot avoid it.

​@@47slogra Liandry's+Rift+Shojins im pretty sure isn't the best build. Liandry's+Rift is a 16% damage increase after 5 seconds of being in combat. Shojins raises that to 22% after 4 ability hits. Compared to Navori+Rapidfire route which Navori should be granting 16-20% bonus damage at all times with no windup, and the Q scaling off of 30% crit chance (Since AD Smolder is Q oriented). If you're going to do a W+R oriented smolder full AP is the best route, not Shojins. With the rift+Liandry's+Shojins you still need armor pen from Fridge/LDR/MR. Then you will probably need a survival option or more damage. And then you need boots/Cosmic/Rapidfire. You will end up having between 250-300AD and 220-300AP (if you didn't go dcap or Banshee/Zhonya). In the end your Q will be doing around 350-400 damage whilst your W will be doing 505-605, and your R will be doing 900-1200. If you go dcap the W and R values will be around 200-250 higher. With the full stack Rift+Liandry's+Shojins passive you are only getting 60-80 extra damage on Q, 100-120 extra damage on W, and 200-240 extra damage on R. It'd be a good hybrid build for extra tankiness, but you need to be very active in fights and can't let yourself fall out of combat to lose your bonuses. Full AP on the other hand if you want to be W and R oriented which would look like: Liandry's/Ludens, Horizon, Grudge/LDR/MR, Dcap, Zhonya/Banshee/Void/Seraphs (Void isn't the best unless you have like 600 stacks), Cosmic/Boots. You will end up having around 140 AD and 700-900 AP. Your Q will be doing around 290-340 damage. Your W will be doing 935-1135 damage. And your R will be doing 1100/1300 - 1480/1700 damage. Then if you went Liandry's you get a 6% increase after 3 seconds, and Horizon focus grants 10% Increase on ult and W, granting a bonus of: 18 bonus damage on Q, 150-180 bonus damage on W, 170-200/220-300 bonus damage on R. If you notice the difference, Whilst the AP variant loses out on Q effectiveness (which gets fixed by 225 stacks), it has way stronger W's and R's by 400-500 increased damage with also higher bonus damage as well with the 16% increase instead of 22% (granted you need to proc horizon which is easy with W and R). You could sacrifice a survival option to go Horizon with the Shojins build as well for another 10% damage, but you will most likely end up wanting a survival option or Dcap over 10% increased damage. The main differences would be in HP between the builds and perhaps haste. But basically TLDR, if you want a Q based build go Rapidfire+Navori and crit oriented. If you want to be a ranged physical mage that nukes people in team fights with W and R at safer distances, go AP. Q won't be effective until 225 stacks. Shojins+Rift+Liandry ultimately nerfs smolder in damage output by a lot by either making his Q somewhat stronger than AP but his W and R significantly weaker, or his W and R quite a bit stronger than AD but his Q significantly weaker. Which is why if you want to focus on W and R go AP. Otherwise go AD for Q. The other issue with the hybrid build is it has ramp up time, unlike the other two builds who gain their bonuses almost instantly.
