A lot of my trees are starting to get to a decent size. I've got 4 pink parfait open cross and 3 wickson open cross from 2019, then 7 pink parfait trailman, 7 sweet 16 appleoosa, 5 pendragon trailman, and 5 chestnut crab trailman from 2020. They're all doing pretty well and I'm really excited to see what I get in a few years.

Super excited about Triceratops! I do like a good bit of soft tannin (astringent vs bitter) in my dessert apples and the flavor sounds like it has good depth. Bought a cider press this year so anything good for cider catches my ear. Thanks for the update on Sugarwood. Over the winter a deer got trapped my fenced garden, freaked out for a bit and snapped off the tip of my Sugarwood tree before escaping. I saved the broken piece and grafted that. That garden got mostly neglected over the summer which allowed the original tree to sprout about 6 little side branches (1/8 in thick). They're way too low to be permanent branches, so what I'd like to do is donate them as scionwood for your spring 2022 auction if you go that route. They're not ideal diameter specimens, but for someone who really wants those genetics, they would totally still work. If you're interested just let me know and I'll circle back in like February.
@SkillCult3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty tannic. having eaten more of them now, it can be pretty fibrous too. But under better condtions who knows. We had a wicked drought year this time around. Thanks, that would be great. I think I should have more scionwood already this year than last. I grafted some stuff to get more scion wood, though more cherub than sugarwood. As you can see, the original tree is not producing much wood lol. i'm lucky it's still alive.

hopefully I'll keep that project up. I'm going to star working in town at a place I can grow citrus, so I might try citrus breeding. I'm thinking more red fleshed citrus, like mandarin and grapefruit hybrids with blood orange. And cold hardy avocados! We'll see.

@SkillCult3 жыл бұрын
yes, it's very interesting. I just ate one yesterday. it also has a musky flavor, is the only way I can think to describe it. might have to call it muskmelon! though watermelons are not musky. It might be a while before I get to taste that without any watercore. I'll graft it out to a foundation tree this winter and let it grow.

If they aren't stolen by mice like last year lol, I should have a lot of interesting crosses and lots of good OP seed too. A lot of the red flesh blend this year will be from my seedlings, which is pretty cool. Lots of cherum and pink parfait crosses, chestnut crab, william's pride...

It really isn't actually. it's 18% which is much higher than the national average. I usually range from about 15% up to as high as 28%. Having eaten more, it does have some of Pink Lady's acidity, so that cuts the effect a little. After tasting a lot of apples it becomes hard to tell sometimes.

Very nice! An extended season here in Nova Scotia and another good year for apples, not quite as good as last year but that was exceptional. I'm full on planting apple trees mostly from 5 gallon buckets...done 30 and at least another 30 to go. Eating all kinds of them too, ate a bunch while watching this video! That Blenheim Orange always makes my face sweat. For a person into breeding and sending out scions, I can see how California or Oregon is ideal because growing and sending out material from a disease prone place means a restricted market. Here in disease central I think I'll focus on taste, keeping quality and disease resistance. I'm trying Pink Pearl on B118 stock, which might help with the frightful scab or just put it out of reach :)

Maybe the bags increase the local ethylene concentration in a way that is deleterious to the slow ripening of the late hangers. The curly leafed tree is interesting, maybe that is a drought adaptation.
@SkillCult3 жыл бұрын
that's a thought. It almost looks like sunburn and it is on the sun side of the apples I think. It seems like it would prevent that, but maybe being bagged, they are extra susceptible? dunno.
@KevinsDisobedience3 жыл бұрын
Man, it seems like you’re just hitting your stride with this apple project. You’re trees look better trained than mine. I inherited about half of what I have and have planted about six more since I’ve been here. I have one pear tree that was never pruned until I got here, and I basically pollarded it a few years ago to get it down to a manageable height, and while it produces lots of large tasty fruit (just made pear butter today), it does seem to want to send up a ton of suckers every year ever since I cut it back so heavy. I’ve been cutting back the sucker shoots every year since then. Should I continue to do that or should I let a few leaders go so that it doesn’t panic and feel like it needs to send up 30% new shoots every year to save itself? Thanks
@SkillCult3 жыл бұрын
you can keep pruning it to size. As long as it's producing and you are leaving fruiting wood, it should be okay. It just want's to express it's nature, which for pears is to grow tall if the resources are there. If you get a lot more growth on it, it may start to slow down. It have to have a lot of growing points though, which may not work into your plans.
@KevinsDisobedience3 жыл бұрын
I’ve got an older tree with curly leaves like that one as well. The first year I was here I thought it had leaf spot or something. Any idea as to where that trait comes from and why?
@SkillCult3 жыл бұрын
I think it's a just a genetic thing. Probably doesn't mean much of anything. It looks kind of neat.

@@SkillCult they're definitely down in CA, might have to head south to find any. Pretty spendy at $1.50/ea at Trader Joes for the Lucy Glo, but can get to $5/lb at a higher-ish end grocery. The Lucy Glo is my favorite out of the two, but has issues with internal browning.

Hey Steve, I know this isn’t a tanning video, but I’ve been fleshing hair on skins. Besides the beginner mistakes, On the thinner parts the hair is protruding through the flesh side. Im assuming this isn’t normal and I’ve been using the dull side for the majority of the fleshing. I might be pushing downwards too hard, any insight would be appreciated!
@SkillCult3 жыл бұрын
that happens on some skins. it doesn't always mean you are fleshing too deep. Raccoons do it and pigs especially. sometimes the roots just go all the way through the skin. As long as you are getting enough off, then I guess back off a little.

All the home grown apples I've had from around here (Colorado) taste dusty. Another way to describe it might be starchy, like someone added some cornstarch to the apples. My best tree is a Granny Smith, and those apples taste/feel dusty, and two of my neighbors have generic grocery store apple trees (Fuji, McIntosh, gala, etc), and they taste that way too. I am guessing it is something environmental. To be clear, they aren't mealy nor are they under ripe. If anyone has a suggestion for how to prevent this, I'd like to know. We get almost no rain starting in late summer through the fall, but that doesn't sound much different than the weather where Skillcult is.

With Flaxen you said you could “taste the pink”- I’ve never had a pink fleshed apple - can you describe the flavor? 🧐

Generally it's berry notes, but it can be like strawberry, or more generic berry flavor. I'm starting to wonder if I should have named that one pink lemonade. I still have to eat my way through about 10 or 15 of them the next weeks. Hopefully they will continue to get redder. I ate one today, and it was good, though still under ripe.

Hello, new subscriber here. I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of how and when I could go about getting some Scion wood from this breeding work?
@SkillCult2 жыл бұрын
Hi Travis. I sell scions in the winter time. The best way to find out about releases is patreon or my blog on skillcult.com The newest of my varieties, that I just have a less scions of, go on auction on figbid. Also, Patrons get first pick of seeds and scions. I'll have a lot of cherub and cherry crush this year. I might have enough black strawberry to just sell them this year instead of auction, along with some others but I dn't know til I cut scionwood in January.
@travisdavis10422 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I’ll have to look into those three throughout your channel. The Rubaiyat X Cripps pink 2013 #3 cross is the one that initially got my attention. If it hasn’t been named would it be a safe assumption to make that scion wood won’t be offered through the site?
@SkillCult2 жыл бұрын
@@travisdavis1042 i'm not releasing that this year, but the name is Pinker Lady. Hopefully by the time I release it, I'll have a lot of scions.
